Rating: Summary: Incredibly real and inspiring! Triumphant! Review: I absolutely loved this book! Some of the reasons that I liked it: The main character is so real; every reader can find part of him or herself in Dolores. It kept me interested from the moment I started reading it; I couldn't put it down. It shows how hateful people can be, but also how wonderful they can be. It will change your opinions about certain types of people.
Rating: Summary: This book was excellent Review: I recently read this book for a school assignment, never having heard of it before. I wasn't sure how much I would really enjoy it. Once reading the book, I couldn't stop. I ate throught it. I couldn't believe how honest and frank it was. Some sections were somewhat unappealing, however, I found myself relating to Dolores. I have none of the problems she did, yet, because it was such a powerful story, I felt as if I were Dolores! I definately recommend this book to a mature reader. It is refreshing to see how well a man understands a woman and her feelings. I would love to meet the author!
Rating: Summary: beautifully written Review: Tells the story of Dolores Price with all the twists and turns and things that come up in life. I really couldn't put this book down. In fact I stayed up all night reading it because I started to care so much about the main character. All her crazy quirk make her even more loveable and easy to relate to. You are on the journey with her because you don't know what is going to happen next. Much of her life is painful but in the end she gains a kind of quiet triumph.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! It has depth, breadth and life. Review: Lamb gives his readers a challenge. He wants us to understand Delores. As I read this book I struggled with Delores, she is a difficult person to like. But then as I continued reading I realized that I am not suppose to like Delores. As the reader, I am to accept her and love her. Delores is very human, and through her experience I can appreciate my own human experience. The theme of rebirth brings to mind that all our life challenges, and dead-ends are essentaially rebirths and a series of open doors. Lamb's writing style is chock-filled with symbolism, satire, and a deep understanding of the human experience.
Rating: Summary: Amazing, awesome, A+ book Review: So many have already posted their comments, but I must also comment that this is one of the best books I have read in a long, long time. I only wish I had read it when I first spied it at the library back in 1993(?) rather than waiting until 1998. Mr. Lamb's grasp of the female psyche is so true and real, and his writing is so vivid, it is a shame that it took 6 years for Mr. Lamb's book to receive the recognition and high honors it truly deserves. I cried when I finished the book, not only because I was happy for Delores, but also because I hated to see the book end.
Rating: Summary: best book i have ever read! Review: definetly the best book ever! this book meant a lot to me in a lot of ways...it was just...touching. i know that sounds cheesy, but it's true. not in all of my 13 years have a read such an influential book! -caitlin, age 13
Rating: Summary: Flabby Review: Everything about this novel is flabby including the heroine. First, nothing impels the plot to move forward; one tragic or abusive episode just follows another rather endlessly without the main character's changing very much or learning much until the end. The book seems to follow the pattern of much fiction aimed at women who have low self esteem but at the end dump their husbands and take college classes. The main character is flabby both literally and figuratively and is rendered very superficially by the author. The biggest disappointment however is the flabby humor. Much of it consists of just nostalgic references to television shows or items of pop culture; rarely is the humor satiric, edgy, ironic, or absurd. It tiptoes along, trying to be odd or Salingeresque but never rises to the surreal level of even a John Irving. I think that's because the author's attitudes are basically sentimental. And finally the worst fault is the meaningless of the book as a whole; it's all so obvious. What is new about overweight people eating to assuage pain? I think people like the book because it confirms certain cultural myths that we believe in without questioning. Many reviewers complain the book is depressing, but what I find depressing is the number of people who claim that this is the best book they have ever read. Ideally, books should challenge us to rethink our assumptions instead of just accepting what our culture dishes out. Readers such as Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, Laurie Moore, Jane Smiley, Toni Morrison, A. S. Byatt, to name a few, do that.
Rating: Summary: A compelling look at growing up in middle class America Review: This book is unlike anything I've ever read before. At every turn of the page, I wish I could cry. Dolores is so poignant. While my life is nothing like the character in the book, she is so easy to empathize with. The author has undoubtedly brought to life someone that could change the world, one reader at a time.
Rating: Summary: a startling look at a troublesome life . . . Review: When first beginning this novel, I thought it was about the plight of a troubled woman. But as I read on I came to understand one important fact: this book wasn't necessarily about women, but about the human race in general. It showed how cruel and minipulative humans can be to one another, while showing compassion, innocence, vulnerability, and lonliness at the same time. It was a captivating book that kept me wondering what the main character, Dolores, was going to do or say next. This book shows many pains and hardships in life and how they can be overcome. A definite must read!
Rating: Summary: GREAT! Review: Loved it and having my friends all read it... it's amazing to me that a man could get inside a female character like that (it surprises me when a women does it that well too)
