Summary: A book that makes you take notice!!!
Review: This was a fantastic, wonderful book and I just could not put it down until I finished it!! I found it even more fascinating that this book was written by a man. It was very gripping portrayal of one woman's struggle to be "normal". I have told everyone I know that they should read this book, and I can only hope they can get as much out of it as I did.

Summary: Just didn't get it.
Review: This was the first Oprah book I read, and I thought it was strange. I didn't find myself caring about the characters. I thought the plot was weird. I just didn't get it. Guess I need to find someone else to recommend reading material.

Summary: A book that is real life
Review: I found this book to really deal with everyday real life situations. There was no glamour, or great loves. It is a book about growing up in the real world. I enjoyed it and would recommend it everyone.

Summary: a stagnant story of the life of a girl. hard to relate to
Review: Her life is not a happy one, but at least she found some happiness at last. I don't like it much and think it's a waste of my time reading it.

Summary: Great book for those who love tragedy!
Review: Even though at times I found the events to be "unbelievable", I couldn't put the book down. At the end of each chapter I had to read just a "little bit" of the next chapter to see what Delores was going to do next, and found myself reading the whole chapter and so on through the entire book. I love tragic stories and Delores' life is nothing less than tragic. Hard to believe that such thorough emotional detail could have come from a MALE author. I have recommended this book to all of my friends!

Summary: Optimistic? - Oh yes it is!
Review: I loved this book. Anybody who wants to celebrate the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity should read it. Initially I was concerned that Dolores's story would be a catalogue of human misery but I realised that it described how somebody can have the courage to overcome life's hurdles. Like John Irving or Alice Hoffman, Wally Lamb excels in writing about how love of family and friends can help people to eventually overcome seemingly unendurable tragedy. At heart, this is an optimistic book and especially - even during its darkest passages - it is laugh-out-loud funny!

Summary: Engrossing, captivating and nowhere near lighthearted!
Review: This book will leave you in thought. Dolores Price, the quick-to-judge and quick-to-be-judged main character, is not someone you will soon forget. Her battle to beat all odds of a marred past often leaves you moved to the point where you want to reach out and help her. Although the book is far from uplifting, tends to drag at times and seems as though every awful thing that can happen to a person has happened to Dolores, this novel is eerily insightful. A must-read for anyone who was once a child!

Summary: Is Oprah crazy?
Review: I bought this book based on Oprah's recommendation and I was completely disappointed. This book failed on so many levels. First of all, the in-depth narration of Dolores' childhood was not necessary. I know this sets the tone and it gives the reader the background of the character but I immediately took a disliking to the protagonist of the story. As an author Lamb did a poor of job getting me to sympathize with this young woman named Dolores. Second, with all the attention given to the character's childhood and adolescence, the recovery period was minute and not as thorough as it should have been. This should have been the most significant aspect of the book. I do love Dolores' transformation at the end of the book. That was the most powerful section. Overall, the book was a disappointment.

Summary: an extremely emotional and spiritual journey with Delores
Review: After I started this book, I could absolutely not put it down. I have never seen anyhone handed a worse course of life events with Dolores, but she always comes through. She is the reluctant heroine. The way this book was written is so honest and realistic that I felt like I was right there with her as she went through everything. In summary, IF YOU ONLY HAVE TO READ ONE MORE BOOK IN YOUR WHOLE LIFE,LET THIS BE THE ONE. I know it sounds corny, but this book truly changed my life. Seeing how Delores made it through all her ordeals really gave me a new outlook on life- that there was nothing that I couldn't endure.
