Rating: Summary: LEAVE OPRAH OUT OF IT... Review: DON'T READ THIS BOOK because Oprah tells you to...read it because it is an extremely interesting journey...read it to experience Lamb's unpretentious, humourous, genuine, playful, and yet thoughtful writing style...read it so that you will have the chance to meet one of the most extraordinary (in the true sense of the word) female characters ever written about...I've got to go along with apparently hundreds of other readers who say they honestly "couldn't put it down". Delores was just too interesting to leave alone for a day...For those who say that the book is "horribly depressing", I must say that I think you've not gone far enough into the absurd beauty of the story...yes, much #@%$&*@ happens to Delores...I'm not sure if Lamb really intended on making an entirely "believable" or "realistic" character for us...she's a representation of ALL women I guess...she is ALL women-becoming (past, present, future), and in that way she is strangely appealing. Captivating, frustrating, inviting, joyful, tragic, hopeful, yes...but hardly boring or a 'waste of time'.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I have ever read Review: This book was amazing. It has the power to inspire all women, no matter who they are or who they think they are. It was uplifting because the struggles described in this book so commonly conquer people, but but they didn't conquer Delores, who seems so incredibly hopless. It certainly gave me hope! Also, I couldn't believe that a man wrote it, I had to keep looking at the picture of him on the back sleeve to make sure.
Rating: Summary: Solid but average book. Review: This is a well-written book, but I didn't find much out of the ordinary in its storytelling. Characters and details are complete and believable, but the pop-psychology that is so prevalent and overdone these days plays throughout the book that it has become cliche. It's a solid book to read if you're looking for something to read over all the bad books out there, but it just ranks average.
Rating: Summary: A refreshing book about coming of age Review: Wally Lamb's book "She's Come Undone" really gets inside the reader's brain. The author writes in a female voice extremely convincingly and produces a unique perspective of what it was like for this unconventional heroine to come of age. At times, you dislike her for her adolescent angst but miraculously, she emerges as a sympathetic character. When I finished the book, it was difficult to leave the world of this character because it was so richly described by Lamb. This book definitely deserves all of the accolades it has received.
Rating: Summary: awe-inspiring, eye-opening, rising from the ashes Review: I had heard about this book from a couple of friends. Some of them liked it and some hated it. I decided to read it for myself. Although it only took me two days, I could relate to Dolores in so many ways. She went through hell and I don't think that I will ever be the same after reading this. This is not the happily-ever-after type book, it's real to life and it moved me to look deeper into my own life. I loved it and I am going to read it again because I feel that it's that type of book.
Rating: Summary: She's Come Undone mirrors the hardships of a troubled teen. Review: She's Come Undone is the powerful story of a teenager's struggle with her conscience and peers and she progresses through life. Growing up, Dolores is obese, haughty, and unpopular. As she lives her life, she learns the true meaning of friendship and loyalty. You will find yourself smiling and crying as Wally Lamb steps inside the troubled mind of a young girl. If you like tearjerkers, She's Come Undone is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: I read this book because I was housebound during snowstorms Review: and I wasn't sorry that I had chosen the book. It kept my interest peaked and I finished it quickly. At times, I felt very tense. I felt like shaking Dolores, especially during her marriage. That husband was such a jerk. I loved the analogy of the whale. I liked the ending of the book, not too sappy or unrealistic. Now, I want to read Wally Lamb's second book.
Rating: Summary: Gripping and piercingly accurate Review: I picked up this book because my roommate had read it and I couldn't stop reading it. The manner in which Wally Lamb describes the trials and tribulations of Delores Price hits so close to home so many times that I found it shocking and amazing that it was written by a man. The experiences she has are real to so many women on some level, as are her feelings and reactions. This is an excellently written passionate tale of what it is like to be a woman who has all of the worst of life thrown at you constantly. Don't we all feel that way some times? If you think you can relate at all, read it... it's worth the time.
Rating: Summary: great Review: grea
Rating: Summary: Hilarious? Funny? Not quite! Review: I bought this book based on the New York Times review which called it "An ambitious, often stirring and hilarious book." While I found the story gripping to read, I didn't find anything in it remotely funny. The characters in it are sad, angry, distraught, disgusting and often appalling. Don't expect to laugh unless you find human suffering, rape, child-molestation, self-destruction, abuse, obesity, adultery, unhappiness, AIDS, abortion, and death, funny. The bottom line? Reader beware!!! If you want to laugh and relate to characters...try BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, now THAT is a laugh out loud funny book!!!
