Summary: Read 'til the end...
Review: I kept reading and reading and waiting to see why this was a NY Times best seller. It wasn't until about the last 60 or so pages that it turned around for me and I started enjoying it. If you find yourself having a hard time getting through...keep on going. It gets better.

Summary: She's Come Undone
Review: I enjoyed reading this book. I was surprised to find something so great on a school summer reading list!

Summary: Depressing, not my cup of tea...
Review: First off, I have to say I found this book very depressing. I found it hard to enjoy because I became so impatient with the main character. Yes, she was handed a raw deal in life, but so much of her pain and anguish seemed to come from her own doing. I found I didn't pity her at all and became angry with her constant bad decisions. I got tired of being depressed along with the main character and was glad when the book was finished.

That said, I do want to say that the author's writing style made this a fast read. The pages turned effortlessly really, it's just I couldn't get into the story or characters. It was not a boring book by any means, just depressing.

Summary: 'Twas Ok
Review: This book was good enought for me to keep wanting to read it but it isn't what I wold all a great work of writing.

I did think that Wally Lamb did an excellent portrayal of a female character but the book just didn't do it for me. Although I did feel sorry for Dolores with all that she has been through and the ending made me happy.

It was witty too, I found myslef laughing. But, like I said it just wasn't that all impressive.

Summary: Great Book
Review: I read Wally Lamb's I know this much is true and loved it so I decided to read his first novel and was so glad that I did. Wally's portrayal of a young woman is right on the money. This book succed me in and I found myself staying up til 3 am reading it. The story of Dolores is very moving with her parents separating, her mom going crazy, Dolores being ridiculed for her weight at almost 300 lb... So many different things happening to the main character... Great book cannot wait for the authors next novel.

Summary: Loved this book - Wally Lamb is a genius
Review: This book is never anticlimatic. It goes from one peak to another higher peak to another higher peak. Wally Lamb is the best author I have read in a long time. Read this book and discover the magic of getting totally sucked in and being totally entertained. Great book and great experience reading it. The best book in Oprah's Book Club.

Summary: Long Book Delivers A Quick Read!!
Review: I don't usually get through a long book this quickly, but I found myself not being able to put this one down! Dolores Price, although a complete physical and mental mess, is gripping! This is the story of her worst nightmare... her life. Through her coming-of-age struggles and parents' divorce, she wages war on herself. In reading this book, I kept asking what else could possibly happen to her. Read this book! Let Dolores walk you through her life of diappointment and abandonment, but also, friendship and love. Dolores price is unforgettable.

Wally Lamb is a male writer who convincingly writes a female narrative. In addition to this accomplishment, was his ability to address so many issues, such as divorce, obesity, AIDS, and death conflicting Dolores. As a result of the serious issues this book undertakes, I don't recommend it for young readers.

Although this book addresses sobering topics, it is not humorless. Dolores is surprisingly funny in her situation. She can raise the dickens with the best of them!

Summary: Not what I was looking for...
Review: Wally Lamb is a talented writer, and as I read this book, I really couldn't believe a man wrote this and wrote with the raw emotion of a female writer. But the second I finished the book, I knew I am not a fan of "coming of age" types of books, maybe its because I'm young, I'm not sure, but the whole thing was so depressing for me, thats it, depressing. Not the kind of book that really changes your outlook on anything, it was empty and left no lasting impression on me except the sad-sorry feeling I felt for the protagonist. I thought leaving a lasting impression was the whole point of having "coming of age" books...

Summary: I can't believe a man wrote this...
Review: While I have a few criticisms of this book, I had to give it 5 stars simply for Lamb's tour de force writing from the point of view as a woman. Wow. And not just any woman...but a sexually abused, obese yet very funny one.
Dolores Price is not your average dime store heroine. We first meet her as a child as she observes the fruits of her father's infidelity: his mistress has given the family a tv set. We then travel through the years with her-through her mother's mental illness, her father's departure, a rape, her obesity, a bad marriage.
So you're thinking why should I read this? The book engages you quickly. You want to find out what happens next-always a good sign. The book also offers up hope and humor. No matter how bad it gets, Dolores has a wisecrack. The book also sets its story in parts of the country-blue collar Rhode Island, a not-so-good college in the middle of Pennsylvania, a not-so-pretty (at least emotionally) part of Vermont-that you normally don't read about in fiction (no New York, no California, no Boston).
I would recommend this book to individuals who enjoy contemporary fiction. I would not recommend this book to people who want a "pretty" or a romantic story. This book gnaws at you at times with its rawness. But memorable if you get through it...

Summary: Lamb does Alright
Review: I finally got around to reading this book, several people had recommended it to me, but the concept just didn't grab me. I am also not a patron of Oprah's book club I don't read books based on the sole fact that Oprah has told me to. (Though I must admit I have read and loved a number of books she has picked.)

But, back to "She's Come Undone", the first fifty pages of this book were a chore to wade through. I had no idea where the book was headed or what Lamb intended to do with these characters. Dolores sounded like an overly bratty kid, more horrible than she should have been given her circumstances. Her life had not become truly horrible yet, not like it would later in the novel. I found her to be over-written and her parents to be one-dimensional. I didn't really care that her mother had lost a baby and that she was crazed by grief. Call me cold, but I don't think Bernice Price was written in a way that could make anyone really care. All characters that drive the story should invoke some emotion from the reader.

Fifty pages into this and I was ready to set this novel down forever. But those who recommended this book to me told I had to press on that it would be worth it. The were right. In the end I did enjoy this book. I didn't love it, but I most certainly didn't hate it. I think also that Lamb does a fairly good job of writing female characters effectively. Ultimately though I feel that there is almost an inherent maleness in all of his female characters - not necessairly a bad thing just something I noticed.

I would suggest reading this book and if, like me, you don't want to continue after the first fifty or so pages - press on. It will be worth it in the end. I wouldn't re-read this book, but I am better for having read it once.
