Rating: Summary: Wally Lamb has won my attention! Review: This is a touching story. I found myself drawn in as Dolores evolved clumsily from being a bruised and battered child into a cautiously optimistic, loving, more confident woman. The story of Dolores is not a unique one. Many women face the same trials that Dolores stumbles through. This is a story about real life - a life of secrets and pain - a life that many women live and keep hidden in the dark. Lamb does a successful job of allowing us to share Dolores' pain and triumps. Arguably, however, I don't feel that Lamb was completely effective writing from a woman's prespective. In my opininion, Dolores' character (especially adolescence) had male persona. Maybe this was intentional by Lamb to emphasize Dolores' feeling of uniqueness and lonliness. This read requires a little patience and an empathetic heart. I do recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Wally Lamb KNOWS women! Review: An excellent read! Rich charachters, unforgettable scenes, page after page of entertainment! I'm looking forward reading more of Wally Lamb.
Rating: Summary: Every woman should own this book. Review: This book was recommended to me and I managed to get a copy of it while I was in Japan. I thought it was going to be just another story about weight issues. It really was so much more. It deals with mother-daughter relationships ,issues of becoming a woman and of self worth. I think we can all relate to elements of this book. I liked it so much ai went searching for another book written by Wally Lamb.
Rating: Summary: I am devastated... I finished reading this book today. Review: It's been a very long time since I have read such a touching book. You see, I am Dolores, and I am also her mother. I am Roberta, too, in a way. I am emotionally drawn to the characters because I understand their feelings as my own. Also, if you're reading this, Mr. Lamb, I want you to know that I greatly admire your work. I am no expert on literature, but I'm impressed at the way you describe every detail. If you ever need more feedback on how someone very much like Dolores feels about certain things, write to me, I'll give you all the details I can. And please... KEEP WRITING!
Rating: Summary: Good leisure read. Review: Although I enjoyed the book and the character, my only complaint is everyone saying the author writes a woman so well - I would not say Dolores Price is not in any way, shape, or form, typical of how most women think. I Do think it is typical of how vulnerable and abused people think, and with that he does an excellent job. I recommend it because I could not put it down since the story is so well written and I was interested in how Dolores turned out.
Rating: Summary: I am still in awe that a man wrote this book! Review: A friend encouraged me to read this book. It took me a few weeks before I got a hold of it. Mr.Lamb has done an exceptional job of portraying the lonely, miserable, confused Delores. There have many situations in my own life that I have exprienced that were similar to the character's. I found myself crying for her, frustrated with her, and times even disgusted, finally at the end I found myself cheering for her. Ever since I read this book I have been recommending it to every female I know and I always find myself saying "I still can't believe a man wrote this!"
Rating: Summary: I Cried (and Sometimes Laughed) All the Way Through! Review: Boy, did I identify with this story, this woman, Dolores...even though I didn't have AS bad as a life as hers, her pain spoke to me in volumes. Since this was a 3-day weekend, I sat in bed and read the whole way through, tears pouring down my face. Wally Lamb, god bless him, (him!! not a her!!), created a charachter that you wanted to reach out and hold tight - and never let go. She was you, me, the girl in your high school class that sat in the back, and no one spoke to; we all have a little bit of a Dolores in us. Maybe not everyone has gone through the depths of hell that Dolores Price encountered, but at one time or another, we've seen the feeting glimpses - only a few books out there can affect you in this way. If this book doesn't make you stronger, than you're not human! This book was amazing. Kudos to Mr. Lamb, who was able to put in words the pain, fear and hope we all have in us.
Rating: Summary: Delores is beautiful Review: My life experience is nothing like Delores Price had to go through, yet, I couldn't help identify with her throughout the book. More than anything, she wanted to be loved. It was beautifully written, and overall, a wonderful story.
Rating: Summary: A marvelous piece of fiction!! Review: This book was introduced to me while I was perusing the shelves of our local Encore Books with a friend. My friend, whom has had the wonderful fortune of working for a library, picked it up and told me that she had read it and loved it, and I would, too. I picked it up right then and there, sat down in one of those fabulous comfy chairs they have for customers, and read the first chapter. I was completely drawn in and mesmerized from the first page. Dolores' story, albeit depressing, is a riveting tale of the fight of a young woman for something most of us take for granted -- acceptance in a cruel, selfish society that scoffs at what isn't completely "normal" or "right." While I was sometimes offended and repulsed by parts of the story, Dolores' is a story that was begging to be told, had to be told. Mr. Lamb wrote with such conviction and eloquence I would have thought that it was HIS story he was telling, or that of someone very close to him. I cannot believe he could write the feelings and actions of a woman so well, considering he is a man. I gave this book four stars because I really believe that although it was a wonderful, wonderful book; it did not leave me with the feeling that I believe the perfect work of fiction would leave me. I have not found the perfect book yet, but when I do, I will definitely come on this forum and give it the five stars it deserves. Going back to "She's Come Undone." I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of fourteen. It will make you think, laugh, cry, and love all over again. This is truly a life book, and a masterful one at that.
Rating: Summary: This is the most worthwhile, intriguing novel I've ever read Review: Wow! This novel, with it's eccentric plot, really caught my attention from the start. I loved how Lamb engulfed the reader with Dolores' feelings; he conveys what she is feeling while creating a sense of pity for the overweight character. If you are to read one book this year, read this one! Even if you're not into reading, this life-like, intriguing tale will keep you reading on for more.
