Rating: Summary: An Excellent book Review: This is the best book I've read yet. I loved it. I liked how it showed Delores growing up. She was a very unlucky girl. I like reading books about teenagers. Especially those with people overcoming problems. It makes me feel like I'm not the only one in the world with probelms. I couldn't put it down, and I've recommeded it to all my friends. I wish that everyone could read it and learn from it.
Rating: Summary: Through tragedies, a celebration of life Review: Is it going overboard to depict so much pain in one lifetime? Abandonment, divorce, obesity, mental breakdowns, death... How much can one person take? But with a main character named 'Dolores Price', the foreboding is heavy. Yet as Wally Lamb exposes the terrible suffering, he soothes it as well. This ongoing 'TLC' is what gives Dolores, and readers, the capacity to move on in the story, closing wounds and learning lessons in life. With remarkable humor, the author takes readers back to the basics - taking responsibility for your own life despite your setbacks, and not wasting the precious time that you have to live.
Rating: Summary: I gobble it up Review: interesting how some areas of the country's reviews thought it was bad, and other areas thought it was great. It Was GREAT. The characters are deliciously drawn and wonderfully engaging. Dolores is rude, outrageous, disgusting, loving, heartbreakingly wonderful. Good music. One of my favorite reads. I want to read more Wally Lamb.
Rating: Summary: fantastic story of mental repression Review: AMAZING! poingnant, hit me in the face with reality
Rating: Summary: A great book that speaks the truth of what teens go through. Review: This Book was startlingly real, that there are people out there who go through what Delores did. It spoke the truth, even though a man wrote it through a girl's eyes. This book acknowleges the fact that it is not easy being a teenager, and that they have to go through traumatic experiences which often make them grow up very fast.
Rating: Summary: frusturating yet awsome Review: I loved this book! There were times when I wanted to smack Delores out of her cruel lifestyle filled with self-pity, yet I grew to appreciate her pain and honesty. She is incredibly flawed and human. I especially enjoyed the book because it was not preachy nor sappy. She does not end up marrying a lawyer and ending up like Carol Brady. Yet the subtle tranquillity of the ending is truly triamphant. I know there are readers who were unsatisfied or offended by the book. I know Delores was far from likeable through out most of the novel. She got a bum deal early in life and had problems with moving forward. She tried to learn and understand from her mistakes, and was not even very successful at that. You grew to appreciate her rough edges and cheered when she succeeded. A very realistic read!
Rating: Summary: Entertaining and easy to read, but not challenging. Review: I enjoyed reading this book, as it doesn't require any great effort to digest. It does, however, seem to become tedious in that Dolores Price can't overcome her character faults, no matter how much you want her to. Save your money for Wally's other book -- it is much better!!
Rating: Summary: Hit Close to Home Review: I thought this book was fantastic. Some of the points hit pretty close to home and it felt good when Dolores was able to solve some of her problems and eventually move on with her life.
Rating: Summary: writing style and content flat and simplistic Review: This book was truly an easy read in that it was simplistic. Wally Lamb's writing style is so flat! He doesn't utilize the senses whatsoever. He simply tells a story. One thing he is very good at is using cliches and drawing upon stereotypes. I think that the book starts out fairly good, but the more you read on the more bizarre it gets. Perhaps Lamb is trying to compensate for lack of imagination?
Rating: Summary: Disgusting! Review: This book was totally awful. It deserves a negative one hundred stars. I can't believe Oprah would endorse such a book. I got about half way through this book and decided to put this filth down and not to fill my mind with such trash. I would be embarassed to be able to think of such terrible things, much less be able write a whole book filled with it. Avoid this book at all costs.
