Rating: Summary: I'm not even sure why I picked this book up. Review: I thought, perhaps I could finally identify with someone, nothave to read about model-thin girls with their perfect lives andmates, or my usual heavy load of psych books. Boy, was I wrong. Oh,it started off okay. I even sort of pitied poor Dolores. Then, it just got incredibly annoying. There's a point where you just have to suck it in and try to change a life of shambles, and I don't believe she ever did that. Also, the plot was unrealistic. Honestly, how many people get to meet and have sex with a crush from afar on a first date? I was rooting for Dante when he dumped her. Heh. The only character I liked was little Mr. Pucci--he's the only one who seemed to have a little development to him. Take my advice: if you want to read this book, get it from a library. It isn't worth $11.20 (plus shipping and handling).
Rating: Summary: A masterpiece. Review: This book was so touching and real that I could not put it down. I read this book for a reading group I am a part of and all of us felt the same way...We found a little bit of ourselves in Dolores. I believe every woman could possibly find a bit of herself in Dolores as well.
Rating: Summary: A Great read with a very big heart Review: I intercepted this book while vacationing. My friend had started reading it and I picked it up by the pool at our villa in Tucsany. I would not give it back until I was done. The characters and writing were so compelling, I read in the car, at the dining table, in bed and floating in the pool. I think you will learn and grow with the "fools of good heart" that you will meet in this brilliant work. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Who cares if it's written by a guy? Review: Even though this book is written by a man, he does such a phenomenal job telling the saga of Dolores that we almost believe that it is a personal memoir. He does an extrordinary job illustrating the horrific pain endured by this poor girl. This book was depressing, but incredibly riveting. Lamb seems to offer to us the worst possible situation with an unexpectedly OK outcome. (I mean, think of the things Dolores could have turned into had she not gotten any help). I will recomend this book to all of my best friends. My AP Lit teacher asked us in the beginning of this year why we, as humans, are attracted to tragedy. The answer is simple: we need to know that someone else out there is struggling more than we are. Instead of dismissing it as a "girly book written by a guy," read this book for its many universal lessons.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't Put It Down! Review: I absolutely loved this book! Dolores was a character that I could totally relate to. Of course, I've never done any of the things she's done and some of them were unbelievable if you delve too deeply, but that doesn't matter. This could be the best book I've read all year - and I read about 3 books a week. I found myself up all night to see what was going to happen to her. Five Stars!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I was so disappointed that Oprah recommended this book, that I will never trust one of her choices again. I hoped to share this with my friends after I finished, but was too ashamed to admit that I actually lasted through the whole horrific story. Wally needs to write about what he really knows. He should not write about female sexuality nor how it feels to be a trampled woman. He doesn't have a clue.
Rating: Summary: I found it dull and whiny Review: I agree with some of the women who wrote in saying they were irritated that, once again, a man has tried to usurp womanhood with a story that simply doesn't thrill. It is a tad dull. The main character is kind of a drip and so are the other people in the book. However, I am reading "I Know This Much Is True" and after a bit of a pokey start that book is dynamite; perhaps because (hello!) the protagonist is a man and Mr. Lamb has finally found a fully believable voice. Can't put it down, whereas "She's Come Undone" was, for me, a bit of a drudge to the end. Still...I think there may be some swampy people out there who identify with it, not to be condescending or anything...
Rating: Summary: a good read.. Review: This book was interesting enough to keep me going, but I'm not sure I'd rate it as "an anthem for women" like one reviewer here does. It certainly didn't have the impact of Marilyn French's "The Women's Room" or Doris Lessing's "The Golden Notebook". However, it was a good read, and kept me interested to the end. The folks here who say the book was depressing obviously didn't bother to finish it ;-) since it ends on a happy note. I think I'll read "I Know This Much is True" since several people here say its even better than this one...
Rating: Summary: Deeply touching and inspiring Review: Dolores's strength is, in my view, the best aspect of this book. Despite the incredible hardships she endures throughout her first 40 years, she does, in the end, come to the fulfillment and happiness for which she has yearned her whole life. And she doesn't just stumble upon happiness--she has to make it for herself, achieve it. This is a story of the triumph of the undauntable human spirit, more than anything. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for an engrossing, uplifting read.
Rating: Summary: A HARD TO READ BOOK Review: I was dissapointed to read this book after learning it was one of oprahs choices...It was one continuous accident after another, the characters were not people I caould get attcahed to, and I could easily have put the book down rather than finish it, If you read this book, or want to read one that goes straight to your heart, read Stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher. . .It is a beautiful story of unrequited love. . .for certain the love story of the nineties. I intended to give the book a quick read, but I got so caught up in the story that I couldn't put the book down. From the very beginning, I was fully caught up in the heart-wrenching account of Julie Hunter's battle with lupus and her growing love for Don Lipton. This love, in the face of Julie's impending death, makes for a story that covers the range of human emotions. The touches of humor are great, too, they add some nice contrast and lighten things a bit when emotions are running high. I've never read a book more deserving of being published. It has rare depth. Julie's story will remind your readers that life and love are precious and not to be taken for granted. It has had an impact on me, and for that I'm grateful. Stolen Moments is written with so much sensitivity that it made me want to cry. It is a spellbinder. What terrific writing. Barbara does have an exceptional gift!
