Rating: Summary: Good story, less than real characters Review: Somehow, I just never felt that Dolores Price was a real woman. Sure, she was a real person, but there was something missing for me in the character as a woman that lacked a certain realism. Unlike the characters in "I Know This Much is True," these characters stay relatively flat. In spite of this, the story is quite entertaining, and at times, thought provoking. I was left contemplating just how much happiness we are "given," and how much we can create for ourselves through our choices and perceptions.
Rating: Summary: she's come undone one of modern literature's best Review: depsite the negetive jibes given wally lamb for his unabashedtelling of dolores price's horrific trials through life, the bookstands out as a shining beakon in a world where most modern pieces of literature have become drab, boring, and increasingly more painful to read. "she's come undone," by wally lamb, is a wonder and absolute pleasure to read. the novel is written in a easily understood manner, yet crosses into many deep and archetypical themes: the unattractive girl syndrome, the rape victim, and the woman afraid of admitting what she is to herself. i found myself all at once repelled and driven to dolores, wondering what she would do next, hoping that she would find happiness, even if she had to lie for it. one of the most wonderful and most visually stunning scenes (the book reads like visuals -- i could "see" what was going on) dolores swims to the front of a beached whale and looks into its dead eye, and somehow, feels connected. i strongly recommend this novel. i felt refreshed and exhilerated after experiencing such a powerfully written novel.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely intoxicating Review: I read this book twice: once before my mother passed away, and once after. Both experiences were amazing. Wally Lamb is a genius. He tells a story like no one else. I was thrown into this book and deeply hypnotized. Dolores Price is a character you will both pity and love. You cry with her, you laugh with her, you become her. This is a book for anyone who has ever eaten alone at lunch, kept a dark secret, or lost someone they love. Through Dolores' transformations from a shy school girl, to angry, overweight, teenager, to a mature, powerful woman, you learn that even the most lost causes are never really lost.
Rating: Summary: Study of a Dysfunctional Family Review: A tough book to read, but insightful to see how interactions of family members affect one another. Delores' problems certainly were extreme but her background didn't give her much to fall back on when she was asked to try to "get a grip" on her life.I liked the book but will not recommend it to young readers because of its rather raw treatment of the sexual episodes. (I find that many male authors seem to enjoy writing in this manner while many female authors can cover the same events in a less harsh way.)
Rating: Summary: she's come undone Review: never in my life have i been so deeply moved by such a depressing, yet touching story of one teenage girls trials through life. while trying to find herself in this tale, i suddenly began to see my own personality seeping through the pages and transfixing in my heart. this book throughly changed my outlook on life, my own and life in general. i suggest anyone who has ever been through any sort of trauma in their life, from obesity to rape, divorce to infedility, you MUST read this book.
Rating: Summary: sadly dissapointing Review: im sorry but wally lamb tries to portay this side of womanhood that he obviously knows nothing about. he has a complete lack of insight. he tries to show all these problems women can have except he does it to ONE woman and its unrealistic.
Rating: Summary: SHE'S COME UNDONE...WOW Review: WOW, WELL I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN WRITING ABOUT THIS BOOK. TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH THE ONLY REASON WHY I BEGAN READING THIS BOOK WAS BECAUSE MY ENGLISH TEACHER TOLD ME TO. IT WAS PART OF MY ASSIGMENT. BUT WHEN I BEGAN READING THIS BOOK, THE BOOK DREW MY ATTENETION RIGHT FROM THE BEGINING. NO OTHER BOOK HAS DONE THIS TO ME BEFORE. WHAT ALSO SURPRISES ME IS THAT A MAN LIKE WALLY LAMB COULD WRITE AND FEEL EXACTLY THROUGH A WOMENS PERSEPECTIVE. I DID FIND THE BOOK VERY TOUCHING AS I READ ALONG.
Rating: Summary: A good, but inaccturate book Review: I think that this was a really good book. It shows the hardships of a person that many experience, but not to the same extent as Dolores did. I frequently wanted to reach out and help her. I do believe though that it gives a bad impression of younger people. I am a Junior in High School, and I have NEVER heard people say the awful things that were said in this book. I think that if this book was written by a female it would have given a better description of how a overweight female really feels. A male can imagine what the woman is going through, but never truly capture their thoughts and emotions. Over all it was a pretty good book.
Rating: Summary: Put this on your list Review: One of the best books I've read! I kept forgetting it was written by a man. The voice is very similar to other novels about women (e.g. The Bell Jar, Smart Women, Fear of Flying). Wally Lamb does an excellent job of portraying a young woman with depression. Vivid, lively characters; an excellent look into another person's perspective.
Rating: Summary: absolutely wonderful Review: This is one of the best books I've ever read, and the most amazing thing about it is that it was written by a man. The fact that the author understands the female mind so well is almost unbelievable. I felt like I was living the main character's life with her, and I was completely emotionally drained when I finished it (in about 3 days). I would recommend it to anyone.
