Summary: Great book for a long trip
Review: I thought it amazing that a male author such as Lamb could capture so convincingly the voice of a troubled young girl and record it in a engrossing story of overcoming depression and self-depreciation to find some degree of stability in life. Here is the story of Dolores (a name which, appropriately here, means "sorrow") Price, a chubby young girl who grows into a more-than-chubby young woman who had endured every physical and emotional pain imaginable. You name it, it happened to her. Even a desperate search for happiness by stealing the former shadow of another person's life proves to be a failure. Dolores finds only one constant comfort in her life -- television. She's Come Undone chronicles forty-plus years of this interesting character's life and of the people she touches on the way.

I bought this book for a four-hour plane trip and it held up well.

Summary: She's Come Undone
Review: "She's Come Undone" is an absolutely amazing and moving story. Dolores Price, a character who I travelled with from her adolescence though womanhood, was one who felt that overeating would compensate for her pain and frustrations. This book is defintely a journey. While reading this book, I went through the ups and downs and trials and tribulations of Dolores' life. It was one of the most realistic and enjoyable books I have ever read. Forty years of this woman's life is detailed enough so that you laugh when she is happy, cry when she is upset, pity when she makes a mistake, and of course, have to love. Dolores faces pain and frustration but it is wonderful to feel for her and follow her through her through obesity, adolescence, college, rape, marriage, divorce- it covers many issues that modern day women face. It is amazing how Wally Lamb creates such a feminine voice, and I sometimes forgot that I was reading a novel written by a man. I think women who have ever felt alone at one time or another should most definitely read this wonderful story.

Summary: Fail to understand this character's appeal, esp. to women
Review: I felt this book was somewhat of an excuse for and celebration of one person's partially self-inflicted victimization, which is not to disparage its quality as a literary work but rather makes me question its mass appeal. It has been a few months since I finished the book, but one theme that particularly disappointed me was Dolores's continual blame of others for situations she had herself created, for example, her intentional pregnancy and subsequent victim mentality over her eventual abortion, an abortion that she could have easily chosen to avoid, either by having her baby or not getting pregnant in the first place. I was disappointed that so many readers were inspired by a person who was hampered mostly by surmountable personal weakness. Her poor relationship choices were particularly detestable, as they were compared to other, real hardships she endured that were beyond her control, such as her early sexual abuse and family problems. Her subsequent decisions to binge doughnuts, hook up with jerks, and treat those who tried to assist her in a hostile manner were merely pathetic, and her story would have been far more inspiring, particularly as a woman's story, if she had learned to shift some of the blame of her failures to herself.

Summary: No pull at my heartstrings
Review: This is a psychological story of a young woman who overeats to compensate for her unhappiness. The book is well written, and the characterization of the young woman is excellent. However, I never felt the tug at my heartstrings or the emotional involvement which brings a book above the mundane for me.

Summary: Impressive
Review: I never thought I would ever read an Oprah's Book Club entry, but after reading the first few pages of the copy I had bought my mother for Christmas I was sucked in, and ended up buying one for myself. This is the story of forty years in the life of Delores Price, who begins adolescence at a whopping 257 pounds. It's a story of heartbreak, redemption, love, triumph and tragedy, and told with such intimacy that the fact alone that Wally Lamb is a man makes this novel a standout. (I have read numerous reviews by women that can attest to this.) After finishing this I feel as though I have lived alongside Delores, sharing her thoughts, her dreams, and her pain. I can absolutely guarantee I will read his next, This Much I Know is True. Don't miss this one if you want an emotional read.

Summary: A great book for everyone!
Review: I just love this book. I got it for Christmas, and I couldn't put it down! I'm reading it again right now. Dolores Price is really a charactor that you have to love, even if she is a wreck. She makes your heart ache for her when she is down, and start cheering when she gets back up. But who could blame her for going crazy; her mom is a guilty failure, and her dad is, well, he's a weak adulturier. You follow her life from her first tv through rape, collage, a mental breakdown, a divorce, and a happy marrage. I enjoyed all 400-some pages of this wonderful novel.

Summary: EXCELLENT
Review: I loved this book. It was the first time that I read one of Wally Lamb's books. In fact, I look forward to reading his other book, I Know This Much Is True.

Summary: Humerous Heroine
Review: Although the protagonist in this book must grow up knowing more sorrow than joy, it is written with a humerous approach that will alleviate the the reader's sadness as they become Dolores Price and feel her pain and frustration.

Readers, be honest with yourselves. If you have had an easy life and have known more triumph that loss, more joy than pain and have never felt feelings of inadequacy or insecurity, than don't purchase this book. Because you will not be able to relate to the heroine, Dolores Price, as she survives and matures into a strong, young woman with a tough, comical bravery in the pages of this great book.

Summary: Find Yourself!
Review: Being an avid reader for most of my life, I am always looking for a stunning and moving novel. I first read this book when I was a Junior in college after one of my friends told me it was incredible moving. I couln't put it down. Wally Lamb has a way of shaving down to the core of one's inadequecies and really making you live the character's life.

This book ministered to my soul as it did to all of my girl friends before it moved on to my Mother and all her friends. I have read it again and again, whenever I need a little triumph in my life.

Please read this book and you will gain a little more wisdom.

Summary: Challenging, unpleasant, but worthwhile
Review: Let me start by saying that this is a well-written book. Lamb knows how to keep the reader's interest, and the description is good. It takes great skill to create such an unlikeable protagonist, yet not turn her into an antihero. (The fish tank sequence made me want to jump into the book and kill her--truly.) After she reformed, however, I was rooting for her more. One thing that bothered me was the perpetuation of the stereotype of overweight people having been victims of sexual abuse. (I feel bad for those who are/were, but I would hate for someone to look at me and assume that.) The passages about the Wellfleet whales were moving. The best plot "tweak" in this book was the illustration of what happens when you get what you want! Again, this is basically a very good book--I'm just not usually into "chick" books, I guess.
