Rating: Summary: Wonderfully Written and Sure To Be A Favorite! Review: What can I say about this book? Hmmm...this book took me on a magnificent journey, one that I will never forget. As I read further into the story of Dolores and her hopes, sorrows and self discovery, I found myself laughing, crying and cheering for this girl! Mr. Lamb writes with such detail and passion that it wraps you up inside of it and transports you into another world apart from your own.At the end of the novel I felt I had gained something that I had not had before reading, a greater understanding of love, life and the hopes and dreams of our everyday lives. I would definitely recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: You`ll come undone too Review: She's Come Undone is the owner of both a unique main character and a uniquely-skilled author. Wally Lamb makes Dolores Price come alive in an amazing way. I could not believe that a male wrote this book; I felt for sure it was a female until I saw his picture and info on the last page. Lamb has an amazing ability to understand and describe Dolores' feelings and thought processes throughout an entire novel. I love the author's style and story. When reading this book I could not decide whether to hate or love Dolores. At times I felt so sorry for the pathetic girl whose father was a pitiful example before leaving completely. I imagined her waiting for her daddy to return and could see how she would be crushed when he never did. I could see her hating her mother for losing her mind and leaving her (to go to a mental institution) as well. I could understand why she took awful habits such as eating, lying, and being cruel. However, at times I wanted to shout "Get a life!" at her over and over. Lamb deals with his character throughly, and this book seems almost biographical. Although Dolores' life is miserable, the story is fascinating. Even if there are times when you boo-hiss Dolores' actions, you will find yourself cheering her to triumph the rest of the way.
Rating: Summary: The Ultimate Womens Book Written By A Man Review: I absolutely loved this book. It is not only an amazing book, but amazing that a man was able to transform himself into a young woman. A young woman who has issues that are often difficult for a man to understand. It was so well written and filled with emotion that I honestly would like to congratulate Wally Lamb. He is a true author when he can transform himself into a whole different sex with whole different issues, and still have the book become a masterpiece. It became so real that I felt her sorrow and pain through out the story. Its one of the books you can't put down once you pick it up. The only thing I would change with the book is there was a lot of going back and forth from the past to present and it was sometimes confusing for me. Other then that it was an excellent book.
Rating: Summary: A Bitter Melon Indeed... Review: Though I was delightedly anticipating swallowing a healthy dose of the bleakness and melancholy of reality, the adversity experienced by Delores, the main player in the tale, left me wondering if I had missed something vital in this novel's development. I wondered where the lesson was that the reader was to learn. Then I thought perhaps there was no lesson, that it was to be a simple slice of someone's life. But where, then, was the realism? If it had been a novel written to share the story of an immature, annoying, self-centered, internally ugly woman who suffers from low self-esteem, then I could only praise the author. But because I sense this work was to be inspirational, I feel Wally Lamb fell nigh of his mark. Though I applaud his efforts to explore such topics as rape, obesity, and self-degradation as experienced by a woman, the progression of the storyline and the stereotypes used to describe the characters were shallow and trite. At times, I was almost offended that the author expected that a woman's experience of such complex matters could be so easily penetrated, but then reminded myself that it was to Lamb's credit to have tried in the first place. Still, there was not an insight in this book that was not recycled from another, or a single character who touched my heart. And though Wally Lamb's writing style is pleasant and clean, after reading this book, I am left with a taste in my mouth that is as unpalatable as if I had bitten into a bitter melon... but I suppose I should swallow that down and move on, or I would be no better off than Delores, who is surely still stewing in her own self-afflicted angst.
Rating: Summary: Wally Lamb is a true literary genius! Review: Never before has a book grabbed my heart as "She's Come Undone" has. Lamb is consistantly amazing as he recounts the traumas and tragedies that befall his pathetic, yet sympathetic heroine Dolores. As much as the reader is disgusted with her, she is also endearing, a truly beautiful spirit. She is a fighter, battling the demons of her past, as well as the horrors of her present. Lamb falls short of this writing perfection in his second novel, but "She's Come Undone" is a landmark in contemporary fiction.
Rating: Summary: READ NO OTHER - this book is IT! Review: Enter the world of Dolores Price, a wise and witty, simultaneously loathesome and lovable creature. I have read this book no fewer than ten times and laughed and cried at a different part each time. I have also given this book as a gift to virtually all of my friends. This book will grab you and won't let you go until you've got up and down on Dolores' emotional roller-coaster - you'll end up breathless with your hair messed up, and exhilirated by the ride. A MUST-READ!
Rating: Summary: inspirational Review: This book was well written & an easy read. Dolores Price is an inspirational character & i'm sure most who read this will remember her for a while. I recommend this book to the more MATURE reader only because of the very GRAPHIC details of some sex scenes. The foul language didn't bother me, but the description Lamb used for the sex parts may be a bit much for younger readers....and maybe even the humble readers.
Rating: Summary: An Experience Review: Though I've been reluctant to read anything in Oprah's book club in the past (mainly because of the high and sometimes "corny" drama that are presented in those books), I recieved "She's Come Undone" as a gift and became thoroughly enthralled with it. It takes you through the psychological journey of a young girl, and although it feels almost as if her victory in the end is pyric, you can't help but be slave to the notion she does come out on top. The most startling thing, personally, was that I had to keep reminding myself that this was written by a male. As ignorant as that comment sounds, it was very true to life and to the female persona, and lacked the stereotypes that are traditionally imposed on female characters who have been conjured by male authors. Although "She's Come Undone" may initially appear as another coming of age novel (don't we have too many of those already?), it's far more then that, and I highly reccomend it to anyone of any age, and encourage anyone who's read it to read it again and explore the characters once more. You seem to recieve something different from the book every time.
Rating: Summary: SUPERIOR! Review: It's amazing that a MAN wrote this. It's got the sensitivity and workings of a womans mind, her most inner thought that are seldom expressed to others, even her friends. Superior writing and the story moves along quickly!
Rating: Summary: swirls of emotion Review: I had been recommended "She's Come Undone By Wally Lamb,by a couple of friends who told me it was a amazing book that I had to read. The book is about a girl named Dolores Price who faces some very extreme things while growing up.By the time Dolores reaches thirteen she begins to take comfort in boxed desserts, peanut-butter, roast beef and t.v. She drowns all her problems in food, which then gives her a even bigger problem by the time Dolores reaches adulthood she weighs in at 257 pounds. Lamb covers forty years of Dolores life and the people she meets along the way. Dolores goes through more then anyone can imagine or would want to . You name it she'd been there done that.I'm sure many people can relate to the story in someway. Such as dealing with parents who don't understand you , weight issues and depression , many people can relate to those problems, but as she gets older Price faces many problems that no one should ever deal with. I found myself not able to put down the book. It was the greatest thing I had ever read. It was amazing to me that Mr.Lamb could capture the voice of a girl growing up to be a women and make it come to life.I recommend this book to everyone. This book is about overcoming the impossible and just when you think you've lost hope things work out .
