Rating: Summary: An Uncommonly Rare Find Review: This book speaks to just about any female who has been through a divorce, a death, or struggled some way in her life and searched for a way out. I adore Delores for rising above the horrible life she was faced with. You learn to love her though at times it's extremely difficult. This woman has a conscience and a soul that few people see and the reader is allowed to identify with. I love this novel and look forward to reading more novels by Wally Lamb. Dig in and enjoy!
Rating: Summary: She's Come Undone Review: Very disappointing! I read this book AFTER I read Lamb's I Know This Much Is True, which is one of the BEST books I have ever read. I was so impressed that I had to read his first book. I found the story to be depressing and without a clear point. The struggles of the main character seemed senseless. This book is in no way comparable to his second book - thank goodness! if you want a good read, get a copy of I Know This Much Is True. I can guarantee that you will devour it - it is truly amazing. I cannot say the same for She's Come Undone.
Rating: Summary: One of my favorites Review: This book delves into the development and crazy experiences of a young woman's life. The amazing part is a man wrote all the details that I thought only women perceived. Wally Lamb develops his character beautifully as I found myself lost in the life of Dolores Price. This book is definitely one of my favorites!
Rating: Summary: Wonderfully funny and deeply moving... Review: I read this book as part of a graduate course in my library and information science program at the University of Pittsburgh. I did not realize it was an "Oprah" book until now... but I can why it got such media attention. This chronicles the life of Dolores Price from childhood through her mid - 30s, following the ups and downs of her life. Throughout all of her trials and tribulations, Dolores has a sarcastic, witty sense of humor that helps her deal with the complexity of some heavy issues in her life. I was unable to put the book down, because it has it all! Laughs, tears, and no trite little plot that you can guess halfway through the book. If you want to read something good over the summer, pick it up!
Rating: Summary: amazing story Review: i have never read a book that that has touched me so deeply, i cried. *she's come undone* is touching in every way. it makes you laugh, it makes you cry, and most importantly, it makes you feel. i feel, however, that i cannot mention too much more without giving *something* away so i'll just have to say that it's one of the most amazing novels i've ever read and so poignant. it is definetly worth 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: A good summer read Review: I read this book and hadn't heard of Wally Lamb before. I couldn't believe it was written by a man and kept assuming that the name was nom de plume. Not a real barnburner, but a great companion for the beach this summer. You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: One Woman's Struggle Review: She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb is the story of a young lady, Dolores, who experiences numerous tragedies in her childhood. Upon high school graduation she has become an obese, depressed woman who takes comfort in candy, doughnuts and 24-hour-a-day television watching. Although she is an extremely unlikable character for quite some time - she's manipulative, mean-spirited and prone to lie - she begins to learn from her mistakes and become more cautious, kind-hearted and sensitive to those around her. Lamb seems to highlight the mentally-ill in both his novels which is something I can really appreciate. They are a very real part of our populace and too many times their troubles and lives are shoved under a rug because no one knows quite what to do with them. Including me. Lamb's most endearing attribute, in my opinion, is his ability to create very real characters. Dolores could be Jane or Sally down the street, someone you or your friend alreaky know. Not as good as I Know This Much Is True yet still well worth picking up.
Rating: Summary: The moving journey of one woman Review: While volunteering at a public library during the summer, I noticed that this novel was in constant circulation. Out of interest, I read the blurb and was intrigued. I was determined to read it. Taking a leap of faith, I purchased it at the nearest retail store and delved in.I, unexpectedly, found myself emotionally affected by Dolores and her painful journey of self-discovery. The blurb, which intrigues, does not convey the true weight of this story and the emotion it evokes as well as provokes. Watching Dolores attempt to come to terms with herself time and time again is an experience that is truly unforgettable. Lamb crafts the character of Dolores in a way that, I confess, is unexpected, especially by a male writer. And yet, he successfully, and creditably, gives his heroine a voice that defies any reader to remain indifferenct. I have yet to pick up his second novel, I Know This Much Is True, but I look forward to appreciating Wally Lamb's skillfull ability to craft a painfully real and incredibly moving story.
Rating: Summary: Page-turner Nonetheless Disappointing Review: Competent writing and a titilating premise (raped girl gets obese) crumble into an unrealistic ending. What is this - an infomercial for psychological therapy? Lamb creates a fascinating protagonist with a complicated life, then sends her to an unlikely cure. Life after mental institutionalization just ain't like this. It's a cinderella story with plenty of interesting details, but the denouement is an enormous let-down. Munching my way through this fat best-seller was like Dolores (the narrator) gorging herself on a whole, day-old cream cake... I couldn't stop myself, but when I got to the end I'd degraded myself for wasting time on it...
Rating: Summary: Realistic-Amazing novel Review: I am home for summer vacation, and wanted to start reading some of the books that I had accumulated over the course of the year. After reading the reviews for She's Come Undone, I decided to start on it. The book drew me in from the very beginning. The main character, Delores, battles some of life's most difficult themes, and always kept me guessing at what was going to happen next. It is true that the book can be depressing at times, but it is depressing because you are drawn into her life, and feel as if you are going through everything that she is going through. Wally Lamb created exceptionally realistic characters that you loved and hated with a variety of other emotions mixed in. This book proved to be an outstanding novel, which makes your heart go out to the characters while providing thought provoking questions for your own life as well.
