Rating: Summary: SO GLAD I GAVE IT A SECOND CHANCE Review: For some reason when I first started reading this book, I just didn't like it. I couldn't get into it, it didn't hold my interest. So I just stuck it in a drawer. I was disappointed because I had already read Lamb's "I Know This Much Is True" and loved it. Anyway, one day I finished reading a different book and was in the mood to start another. I couldn't get to the library or book store until the next day, but I really was in the mood to sit down and read. (I read at least a little bit every day). In desperation, I took "She's Come Undone" out of the drawer where it had been abandoned. I certainly didn't expect much. I started reading it, and - lo and behold - I just loved it! I have no idea why I didn't like it the first time around! This time I found it funny, sad, insightful, interesting . . . simply a great read. I would highly recommend this book. Wally Lamb, you are one hell of a writer. Can't wait until you come out with a new one! (I think I liked "I Know This Much Is True" a little bit better than this one. But both novels are masterpieces.)
Rating: Summary: Wonderful engaging book Review: This is a book that's hard to put down. I read on my commutes on the train, and this book engages me the whole way. I feel like I know Dolores, and can even relate to her ina way, although I have not gone through the things she has gone through. I find it amazing that a man wrote this book, it seems completely from a woman's perspective. A must read!
Rating: Summary: She's Come Undone Review: I related to some of the events in the book. I didn't want to put it down.
Rating: Summary: Unforgettable and all too real Review: This book touched my heart. As a woman who's struggled with weight loss, depression and the loss of my mother, this book was as much a healing process as an incredible journey. I recommend it highly, as I do Mr. Lamb's second novel, "I Know This Much is True."
Rating: Summary: The book's undone! Review: Wally Lamb may not have grown up in this time frame, but this is a poor attempt to capture the era. This book seemed overly peppered with 90's language (constant F-Y, F'n this or that) and not in tune with the late 60's/early 70's (nothing groovy or nifty about this one). I made myself finish it only because I started it with a group. Don't waste your time or money on this one.
Rating: Summary: Sad yet beautiful, intriguing! Review: "She's Come Undone", Wally Lamb's first novel, is the story of a girl from a dysfunctional family who has exactly the wrong things happen to her. Her father leaves the family when she is young, her mother is constantly on the verge of insanity, and her grandmother doesn't exactly make life better either. Then Jack, the tenant, does something that really breaks Dolores down. Still a little girl really, trying to deal with her misfortune, and in order to repress her depression and anger, Dolores starts eating. And eating. And eating. Soon her weight has gone so overboard that she becomes an outcast everywhere, especially school. Under the pressure of her mother and because of something terrible that then happens to her mom, Dolores decides to go to school, determined she will just be the "whale" she has always been seen as here. Of course the ignorent college kids hate her, especially her roommate, but Dolores has a little secret that helps her get revenge. Her miserable life brings her to the verge of suicide, when suddenly she finds the motivation to change her life. From here on, her life finally starts having ups as well, but the ups are not as glorious as they first seem... Dolores's fascination or bond with whales, her etch 'n sketch talents, the little secret that starts to dominate her new life, these are all just small parts of a novel that is more than just a story of a depressed overweight girl whose life seems to hold nothing but misery. Dolores is an amazingly realistic character, who goes through many stages and crises that most of us have had to deal with at least once. Everyone has felt like an outcast at some point of his life, and I believe everyoen will find something in Dolores Price that she/he will indentify with. Wally lamb is a wonderful, down to earth writer (and a great lecturer, there is nothing more pleasant than hearing a good writer read his own work) who has managed to perfectly portray his female protagonist. He does good research on his characters and situations, and even the smallest details are amazing, the tv shows, the tunes, the issue of who was the cutest actor, his memory of the 50's and 60's is great. It's the little things that give the final touch to his book. If you're big on Oprah books, you'll love it, if you're not (like me), you'll love it too! I read this book because my mom recommended it and Wally Lamb was about to give a lecture in Amsterdam that we then went to, but I don't regret it for a second, and look forward to reading this book again!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I am 13 years old. i saw this book in a book club cataloug once and the name stuck in my head. i saw it on sale at a book sale and bought it excitidely. then i sat down at home with some snacks, and read the whole book. i was entranced through the whole thing. Lamb's ability to captivate exactly how Dolores wouuld feel, and get you to feel for her. How everything came together at the end. This book is one of many, which i will read again and again. i read all the time, books which my mom tells me i am too young for, but gives to me in abundance anyway. reading is my passion, and Wally Lamb's "She's Come Undone" made it even better.
Rating: Summary: AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: I think my title pretty much says it all. This book is absolutely FABULOUS. I was not really into fiction until I read this book and now I know that fiction can really grab your attention if it is written by the right person. Wally Lamb writes women like he is one. Take it from me we are not easily figured out, but he expresses women very well. I recommend this book to anyone. It is something you will not be able to put down. GET THIS BOOK IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY!!!!
Rating: Summary: Oprah was right on this one! Review: A friend recommended She's Come Undone to me, but I put off buying it. Perhaps it was because of Oprah. I never saw myself as liking a novel Oprah would like -- I've always been a tomboy, prefer Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton over romances. Boy, was I ever wrong! Once I started She's Come Undone, I couldn't wait to get home to read more! It was an emotional rollercoaster, start to finish. I really felt like I was there with Dolores, with all her pain and tears. Buy this book, and buy a box of tissues as well!
Rating: Summary: She's Come Undone Review: During the summer I live at the beach and reading is about the most interesting thing to do. I usually take quite a few books but this summer I forgot to get new ones. I borrowed She's Come Undone from my neighbor and read it in about two days. The story was not the most interesting but the quality of the writing and the situation of the main character, Dolores, was so real that I felt I could sympathize with some of the situations she was put in. The story starts with Dolores as a child. She was always a large child but when the tenant upstairs rapes her she goes into a depressing state and begins to put on weight. Dolores has a miserable childhood, her dad moves out at a young age and she always seems to have a hard time with men. Then when she is raped she loses all faith in the male sex. She keeps gaining weight until she reaches an obese weight of over two hundred pounds. Tragedy strikes Dolores again when she's put into a type of rehab for her to lose weight. She loses weight by not eating and then when she gets out the weight is gained right back. Dolores has a hard time all throughout her school years and then she goes off to college, before she goes she writes her roommate and lies about herself. She tries to make her self sound better then it really is. When she leaves to go to school she gets there a few days early. She makes friends with the female janitor and throughout the rest of her time at college she always counts on Dottie to be there for her. Dolores struggles with fitting in and then she reads about these whales that are beached in a small town in New England. Dolores makes a decision to go and see the whale that had just beached itself on the coast. When she gets there she feels some uncontrollable urge to take her clothes off and get into the water near the whale. She does this and then she goes under water and then attempts suicide. From there the end begins so unless if I would start to tell about it I would have to tell you the rest of the story. This book was very captivating and the writer made the story into a sweater. You slip it on when you feel like it and it's warm and you feel at home in it. This book was the same way you read page after page and you felt at home in it. The reader can feel the emotions and understand what Dolores is going through. I would recommend this book to lots of people. If you have an insecurity problem as a teenager it makes you see that even if some people make fun of you there are always true friends somewhere in the crowd.
