Rating: Summary: I Loved This Book Review: I absolutely loved this book. I read a lot and this is by far the best I have read in a while. I was so sad when this book ended. I would love a sequel to it. Amazing read. I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: One of the 10 best Review: I was shocked at how well Wally lamb could slip into the life of a woman. Dolores was one of the most convincing realistic characters I have ever met in litrature.... My Favorite part in this book is the monoluge Dolores does in Burger King, I did it for a Drama class last semester. Buy this book if you are open minded, and perhaps you will indentify with the characters just as strongly as the other 5 star reviewers.
Rating: Summary: She's come undone Review: In Wally Lamb's book She's Come Undone, Lamb takes you through the chaotic life of a young woman, Dolores Price, and her journey into adulthood. The book starts out with Dolores as a child receiving something that continues on as one of her only friends in life, her television. "Mine is a story of craving; an unreliable account of lusts and troubles that began, somehow, in 1956 on the day our free television was delivered." This is how the book starts, and it starts Dolores on the path to being a loner. Throughout the book, Dolores experiences the gloomier side of childhood life. She is constantly exposed to her parents' violent fighting, and she is never able to relate to either of them. Dolores has one friend as a child, Jeanette, who teaches her everything she doesn't learn from her parents. But in time, Dolores has to move away and she loses the only friend she ever had. When her mother goes into a mental hospital after her father leaves her, Dolores is forced to move in with her grandmother. As Dolores goes through puberty she starts to gain a lot of weight, and she is picked on by her peers at school. When she reaches thirteen she befriends an older man who lives above her in her house and he eventually rapes her one day after he picks her up from school. This terrorizes Dolores for the rest of her life. She is constantly confused by the opposite sex because of the examples given to her by her father and Jack, the man who raped her. As Dolores enters high school, she is about 257 pounds. She is constantly harassed in the hallways of her school, but she gets through high school with the help of her counselor. After she graduates high school, her mother pressures her to attend college, but the thought of attending four more years of hell does not appeal to Dolores, and she refuses. But shortly after, her mother is killed, and Dolores decides to fulfill her mother's wishes, and attend college. But in the end she was right, college was hell, so she runs away. After a suicide attempt Dolores is sent to a rehab and she slowly gets better. She looses a lot of weight and gradually begins to find herself. Throughout the book Dolores becomes more scared of the person she is starting to become, so she just ignores her problems. She never talked to her mother about anything before she died, even though she always wanted to. This was one of the routes to Dolores's problems. But even after her mother dies she still finds a way to reveal who she really is. She goes through a re-birth situation when she's in rehab. Her psychiatrist takes her though the different steps of her life, and this helps her figure out who she really is.
Rating: Summary: Intriguingly Wonderful! Review: Before I started reading this book, I believed that I could never ever read a book unless it was Catcher in the Rye (AWESOME BOOK!!!!). I had made myself believe that I would never find one I could get into and find very interesting. I had "She's come undone" for two years before I recently started reading it. It is just a remarkable book about life. Delores has gone through so many things, as we all have, and this is about her hard knocked life. I would reccomend this book to ANYONE especially an adolescent-college age person who is overweight, been raped, hates men, divorced parents, death of a parent, OR doesn't seem to fit in. This book is remarkable!
Rating: Summary: Conflicted about this one Review: While I believe that Wally Lamb has a fascinating gift for women's literature and a unique understanding of the female psyche, I do not really care for this book. The story did come to life for me and Lamb's vivid writing spoke to me on so many levels, but the tale itself was hard to swallow. I did not respect the protagonist and, as such, felt like I was punishing myself by reading her story. I found that I disliked her more with each line I read. Dolores has experience alot of mistreatment in her life and that is an explanation for her actions, but that doesn't compensate for my adverse reaction to her. Instead of sympathizing for her, I despised her. However, Lamb does tell a tale unlike any I have encountered before and he tells it with a magic no one else could muster. That's the only reason my rating is not merely one star.
Rating: Summary: A Search for Self Review: This is a book that I believe that every woman should read. It was recommended to me my sophomore year in high school, a recommendation that I unfortunately did not take to heart until my sophomore year in college. Lamb does an excellent job of expressing the situations, emotions and actions of a girl coming of age. Dolores is a character to fall in love with and relate to. Though her problems are worse than the averge persons, the feelings and emotional ride that she goes on is one that is so familiar to us all. I highly recommend this to anyone, but especially young women.
Rating: Summary: Did not like it... Review: I did not like this book. It was painful to read and I had to put it down for several days before I could pick it up again. I only did to see how it ended out of curiousity. But, as another reviewer noted, the story line is not believable and is very negative without much redeeming about it. Is the message that you should just stay where you started? Someone told me that Wally Lamb's new book was "exactly the same" - you can bet I won't be reading that one.
Rating: Summary: Best Book Review: I read this book two years ago and have read probably 20 times since. This is a wonderful book. I have to warn you, it is kinda slow in the beginning, but once you get past the first two chapters, you won't want to put it down. Delores is a girl that at first you want to pick up and hug and then later on smack upside the head. But then you will want to hug her again
Rating: Summary: Marvelous - a woman undone then done over¿. Review: I must first say, that I read this book long before it became an Oprah pick. This book is excellent regardless of commercial endorsement (including my own). Anyone who likes to read - needs to read this book. This 'male' author has managed to breath life into a fictitious female character (without stereotypes) - giving the reader a bird's eye view into a life filled with trauma and angst. This book has substance and heart, sadness and joy (with plenty of regret). The life of this character is neither easy nor pretty - this is not a romance novel (this book depicts real life for many people in our society). This woman's world is turned upside down by dysfunctional people, who leave a lasting mark on her life and soul. Wally Lamb is definitely an author with a bright career ahead.
Rating: Summary: A Woman With an Unbreakable Spirit Review: Dolores Price is the heroine in this novel. She has had a difficult life in that her father is a liar who eventually deserts the family, her mother has a nervous breakdown and her grandmother never knew how to show her any love. Dolores moves on with her life despite the mishaps of her home life but she encounters a lot of users and abusers...especially when it comes to the men in her life. Fortunately she is not a quitter and refuses to give up hope that her life will turn out to be the best it can be for her. She never loses her sense of humor throughout all of the ordeals. She inspires all of us to never give up on life or love. This is the first book I've read by Wally Lamb but it will not be my last. I have "I Know This Much Is True" on my To Be Read list.
