Rating: Summary: Would love to meet the author Review: I constantly reminded my self that the author was a man! At first, Dolores Price really bothered me because I really wanted her to take the initiative and make some positive changes in her life. I guess I am someone that judges overweight people, the ones that Dolores had to deal with. It opened my eyes as to how judgemental I can be. I ended up cheering Dolores on and "falling in love" with her. Awesome book.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: I cannot use another word to describe this book. It was just amazing. The relationships she has were so true to relationships I have experienced. I became so engrossed in the character that I felt like she was one of my friends. Her emotions and reactions are human. This is not one of those books where people learn of "inner strength" they never knew they had to overcome everything. It's real. She learns that life is hard and your actions can make it harder. In the end, she learns how to live life with consequences and how to make of life what you want. I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Life writ large--VERY large Review: This novel is a little longer than it has to be. A few of its metaphors and dualities seem a little forced. The heroine, if we may call her that, is an exaggeration of human foibles; hers is life writ large--literally, in this case, because Dolores Price eats when she is dejected and, at her lowest ebb, tops the scales at 257 pounds. Many of the story's characters seem simplistic, even archetypal. The plot is so far fetched it is ludicrous. There are too many coincidences. And yet it all works and this is an excellent book. I was feeling a little depressed when I began this tale, and I thought for a moment that I would put it down and find something else that was a little more uplifting to read. But I could not put it down. I was rewarded with lots of laughs, and throughout all the book's excesses, I could recognize that this is what life is like: maybe not quite like that, but if things could really be as ridiculous as they manage to be for Dolores, something in our hearts tells us that, yes, it would be exactly as the author describes them. In a nutshell, when there is less of Dolores, there is more of Dolores. As she gets better, she sheds the pounds, but it is a long road to her healing. She seems to shoot herself in the foot whenever things start improving. That may be why the book had to be a little long. Dolores cannot seem to stop double-crossing herself. The ending was not as satisfying as I would have liked. True, it is a vindication of Dolores's journey to self discovery. Yet, as the most literally believable part of the book, it was a small let-down for me. It does show us that Dolores is recovered, whole, and real. But after we have struggled along through all the book's torturous detours, it would have been nice to have everything turn out absolutely perfect in the final pages. Dolores undone has become Dolores come together. We will settle for Dolores being happy. But I would have preferred Dolores happily ever after.
Rating: Summary: The character in this book is so pathetic Review: Guess I'm in the minority here. I hated this book. The author seemed to just keep throwing awful things at the main character to keep the story going. I could literally picture him saying to himself, "Now what should I do to her next?" Delores is so pathetic--at no point did she rise up out of the squalor of her life and make something of herself. Compared to other hard-knock life stories, such as Angela's Ashes (which is a TRUE story), the character in this book merely plods along, never making anything of herself, and never showing and strength or ingenuity. Instead of making a point by showing how people can overcome difficulty, this character stayed flat, lifeless, and boring throughout her horribly difficult life. I really have to wonder how much experience or insight Mr. Lamb has into a troubled woman's soul after all.
Rating: Summary: Continues to haunt me Review: A wonderful essay on the confusion that is being an "unacceptable" young girl (not thin, not pretty, not "normal"). Wally Lamb made me feel for her.
Rating: Summary: I've Come Undone Review: This is perhaps the best book I have ever read. While that may seem like an exageration, I promise you it is not. Lamb's portrayal of this overweight and underloved girl is amazing- better than I have ever seen a female do. His ability to comprehend the innermost workings of the female mind amazed me and intrigued me throughout the entire novel. Not only that, but I found myself relating to some emotion on every page. Well written, well structured, and Lamb is well on his way to redefining coming of age novels.
Rating: Summary: an anti-heroine to love Review: Delores comes from an unhappy childhood --- a philandering abandoning father, a mother who borders on mental illness, a trusted neighbor who rapes her --- and balloons to a 257 pound adult, watching TV and eating Mallomars like there is no tomorrow -- and if there is a tomorrow, who cares? Yet underneath her weight and overt pathos is a spunky heroine who can and will kick all the behinds of those who rub her the wrong way. Her college roommate Kippy, for whom Delores does all sorts of favors due to Kippy's breaking her leg on the first day of school, uses her as a servant --- and Delores inadvertently gets back at her and her boyfriend Eric at a Halloween party. Years later, she tracks down Kippy's high-school boyfriend Dante and marries him (after losing lots of weight.) Not that Dante is that great a prize after all .... Delores keeps on truckin' depite facing down hopeless situation after hopeless situation. And that's why you will keep on reading and be sorry when you've reached the book's end.
Rating: Summary: An Amazing Read for All Ages Review: I was 14 when I first read this book. It amazed me. The depth with which Lamb wrote the story- from a girl's point of view- astounded me. My mother ws 42 when she read this book. She also loved it. I believe that Lamb, in the most distasteful of situations, made this book tasteful. To describe the book would not be fair- it is in a genre all its own, and the wonderfulness of it cannot be put into words. Believe me- I know a good book when I see one. Read this book- I promise you will love it!
Rating: Summary: Ending just stops Review: This book is very well written and tells a great story. There were times that I related so well to what this girl felt, it was unreal. I found myself unable to put this book down and had it read within a couple days. The thing that bothered me the most was, the book seemed to just end. I understand how the ending tied together a major turning point, but I felt it just ended. There really wasn't much to it. I had really worked myself up for the ending, and was left thinking, "that was it?" Don't get me wrong it is a great book to read, but I think the ending could have been better.
