Rating: Summary: Metaphors won me over Review: In She's Come Undone, by Wally Lamb, I loved the metaphors that he used. The title She's Come Undone is an example. She is coming undone from all her secrets when she talks to or confronts Dante at Burger King. Also when she is the mental hospital she is also coming undone from her weight that was wrapped around her, the weight that resulted from the lies that her mother fed her. Her obsession with whales is interesting too. They are very similar, Dolores and whales. When the whale breeches at the end of the book, Dolores breeches along with the whale. Both of them got when they wanted, the whale wanted kelp, while Dolores wanted to be set free. She wanted to be free from her childhood, Dante, her infertility, and to live a healthy life with Thayer. Whales are large creatures that can float through the water, despite their weight. Even when Dolores had her weight she too learned how to fly and soared even more when she came out of her mental hospital. I came into the book afraid of the width and the size of the font but when I came to the last page I wanted more. This book is amazing; there are no other words for it. It is truly amazing.
Rating: Summary: Dolores Has Come Undone Review: Wally Lamb's first novel, SHE'S COME UNDONE, is the story of Dolores Price and her journey through life, as a product of a dysfunctional family. We see her dealing with her not-too-perfect parents, with being unpopular in school, and with living as a child of divorced parents. Life has dealt her a bad hand, and unfortunately she does not become strong from these unfortunate circumstances, but caves in while everything around her falls apart.Despite such negative personality traits, Dolores comes across as someone you want to like. You WANT to help her out. You feel empathetic towards her. However, despite how I felt, I found that through most of the story, I did not like her at all, and although I loved reading about her, I found myself becoming more and more irate with Dolores and the situations she got herself into. Dolores finds solace in food, and as life gets tougher, she eats more and more. She does meet people along the way who have a major impact on her life, and through her eyes and theirs, we see her grow into a secure mature adult. It takes a lot of work and a lot of time, but I found that by the end of the book, I liked Dolores Price, and I was glad to have gotten to know her. I greatly recommend this novel, and am looking forward to reading Wally Lamb's I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE.
Rating: Summary: She's Come Undone Audio Book Review: I read this book before I listened to the audio version. I was very disappointed in the audio version. They left out what I thought were important parts of the book. It seemed like pages and pages of information that would key you into how and why Dolores acted the way she did. The print version I thought was very good. Really descript in that you really felt what Dolores felt and almost could relate to what she was feeling. I would advise anyone interested in this book to read it and not listen to the audio version because they leave out a lot of information.
Rating: Summary: A Depressing Book Review: This was one of the most depressing books I've ever read. No one in their right mind would go through what the heroine of this book did. I hated it!
Rating: Summary: what a great book! Review: Making a drastic leap from my usual reading preferences,I've read this book and loved it,at times had a hard time putting it down. In Dolores Price Wally Lamb created a rich complex character, who doesn't have to be constantly likeable or even comonly nice, for us to care about her.I found it amazing that a man had written such a wonderful multi-laired heroine. Without giving away the plot, this is a story about courage, love, guilt, decisions and how they affect one's life, but most of all this is a story about the meaning of life and how, despite all the dissapoitments along the way,it can still suprise you,if you just let it happen. Love or hate her,Dolores Price is a true heroine, deeply flawed and very human one at that, and you won't forget her after putting a book down.
Rating: Summary: One of my very favorite Review: I don't re-read my books. I always feel that instead of re-reading a book, I can have better spent the time on a new journey. Not this time. It is not just Delores (my friends and I call her by name as if she's a friend and often catch ourselves say, Delores would have done this or that), becomes so real and a part of your life, but Wally Lamb's ability to convey any and all her experiences with such wit, humor, sadness, energy, ALWAYS WIT. I have recommended it to everyone I know, without my normal disclaimers, "Well, I liked it, but..." or, "Well if you like ____ then you'll like this". Nope nothing needs to be said, just read it and enjoy the ride you have involved yourself in. You will never forget Delores. You will become her friend, laugh with her, cry with her, want to yell and slap her into reality, and give her a hug when she needs one. It is one of the few times when people actually would come up to me and say, "Isn't that just an amazing book", while I had it in my hands on a bus or train. It is powerful. To everyone. Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: compelling Review: One word: compelling. The life of the main character, Dolores Price, may be too depressing at times but she comes out of each tragic event in a new way. From getting raped to 'losing' her father, from getting obese to losing her mum and grandma, her life never fails to glue the readers to the books as Wally Lamb brings her life out in a lyrical and witty manner. The story is touching and educational in some ways too if you look at it. I believe there would be parts that would allow you to relate to her life and possibly, you can grow stronger by reading this book. The end was absolutely satisfying and it rings a bell with Savage Garden's song: "I knew i loved you before i met you". Sweet ending. Many parts are funny in a way, although the whole book can be rather melancholic. I forced myself to read the book slowly so as not to lose any of the meaning and also, to admire Wally Lamb's impressive writing skills. I conclude by saying that this is an absolute must-read (suitable for both males and females alike)and DO NOT read too quickly!!!
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down Review: I was surprised at Wally Lamb's ability to tell a story from the view of a girl growing into a woman so well. I really enjoyed this book as well as the author's writing style.
Rating: Summary: The best book I ever read! Review: If you have ever struggled with weight issues this is the book for you. It is filled with triumph and tragedy and eveything in between. I have read it so many time i know passages by heart. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
Rating: Summary: The Best I've ever read... Review: I finished "She's Come Undone" with a whole lot of tears surging in between laughs and girlish giggles. And while I was doing this, I let go so much of my emotional baggage. It's aamazing how a book like this can make you do that. Dolores Price is more than a book character to me. It's like I see her everyday in a child who's marriage is on the rocks, in the whales when I watch National Geographic, in the Grandmother who cannot express her feelings, in the man who rapes kids, in the face of almost every stranger I meet - I can see Dolores and what she stands for. She's Come Undone is more than a growing up saga. It's about dealing with one's emotions deep within and the range of risks one is willing to take from there. A journey clouded by many fears - all deep buried in a little girl's heart called Dolores -with the television and Chucky Cheese as soul companions. And on the other hand the strength Dolores derives from the weak men in her life - right from her father to the man she thought she loved. Wally Lamb writes with a smoothness and connection so rare these days in authors. He has the skill of making things so funny and yet so heartbreaking. He gives us the real thing, without frills. One can relate to what Dolores goes through as easily as one could relate to say, To Kill A Mockingbird. A sensitive issue with most of us is being Overweight which is dealt with in such a sensitive manner in this book. Its like Dolores finally cuts all strings attached to her once she reduces and decides to come undone... ...Reading this book was no rollercoaster experience. It was so real that I loved it. This book made me see what we all are made of - probably a little bit of loneliness, some pain, some hurt, redemption, some love and most of all - Self Respect! A true masterpiece.
