Rating: Summary: A sad comic tragedy of self exploration. Review: Whether you like Dolores or not, you will not easily forget her. Always acting with a self knowledge of her immediate actions, or reactions, Dolores rushes through life leaving a wake that could only be produced by the whale with which she identifies herself. I found myself more sympathetic to the supporting characters, particularly her grandmother, her high school teacher and "pal", and finally Thayer. Yes, read this book, but read it more than once to decide if you really like Dolores
Rating: Summary: Not just another good book--actual literature! Review: I was so impressed with Oprah's other recommendations, I had to try this one, despite the cheesy cover. It was definitely worth it. Wally Lamb writes a humorous, poignant story, but what I appreciated the most was that he never cut his heroine any slack. He never cheated the story on her behalf. When she was good, she was realistically good, and when she was bad, she was just as real, at times horrid. I must admit I really hated her at one point, when she did something I could not excuse, whatever her reasons. But I never stopped loving her, or rooting for her; I even catch myself wondering how she's doing now. The book does more than tug at your heartstrings, though. Lamb has crafted a artful work that challenges as it entertains
Rating: Summary: It tugs at the heart strings without being manipulative. Review: When I finished this book I couldn't wait to tell my "reader friends" about it. Tonight I found out that it's on Oprah's list. The snob in me is upset that now everyone will read it - not just sweet sensitive souls like my friends but that whole mob of afternoon talk show fans. Well, I am resigned to the fact that we will not be alone in loving this book and loving Dolores Price. Good for Oprah and her fans and good for Wally Lamb. This is a wonderful life affirming book that gives the reader the courage to go out and face another day
Rating: Summary: For everyone who's ever felt isolated Review: If you've ever felt all alone....as though you existed on a separate plane from everyone else, you'll identify with Delores Price. Her struggles are unique and pile atop one another like brickwork, yet she perseveres. Through Delores' story, you're sure to find something you can identify with and gain hope and strength to face your own daily challenges. I look forward to the next book from Mr. Lamb
Rating: Summary: A must recommend to a friend book Review: Wally Lamb is an extraordinary gifted author. Dolores Price's life struggle brought laughter and tears. She is a remarkable women who only wanted happiness
Rating: Summary: Excellent - a must read Review: This is one of the top 10 best I've ever read. The character development of Delores is so well done that you almost become her while you are reading along...The whale scene is quite amazing
Rating: Summary: How could a man have written this book? Review: I read this book several years ago and thought it was excellent. The book is funny, sad, ironic and you wonder how one woman could go through all of the emotional events and changes that this character goes through. What boggles the mind even more, is that a man wrote it as if he were the main character!!! I can't imagine how a man could have so much insight into how a woman thinks, feels and reacts.
I highly recommend this book - there will be something, if not many things, you will identify with. The chapter where she comes eye to eye underwater with the dying whale is extremely moving and beautifully written. The chapter where her therapist has her in a swimming pool, imagining she is in her mother's womb is hysterically funny. The chapter where she ... just read it! As you read it ask yourself "How could a man have written this book?"

Rating: Summary: deep passionate sad hilarious Review: Having been a dormmate of Wally's at UCONN, I'm not surprised at the wonderful story he weaves. This book is very smartly written by a very thoughtful and obviously compassionate person.Bravo,Wally
Rating: Summary: Don't Let the Cheesy Jackie Collinsesque Cover Fool You! Review: A very funny, very warm read. The book's movie rights have been optioned for some time now, but while you're waiting for that, console yourself with the quaintly humorous tale Lamb projects inside your own head. Hero, antihero, whatever: Lamb's Delores undergoes a mystical/mythical/spiritual/emotional/physical hero journey transformation just as affecting as that inside any literature prof's dusty and ancient leatherbound tome. This is one of those rare books that you can love on a "literature" level, yet fits right next to the suntan lotion as the perfect beach book as well
Rating: Summary: Lamb must have been a woman in a previous life! Review: A funny, insightful, complex (yet an easy read),coming-of-age
story about a girl you'll never forget. Will be especially
appreciated by Baby Boomers..lots of "Oh my God, I did that
too's". I kept thinking that Wally Lamb had to be a pen name for some amazingly clever woman writer. Everyone I've recommended this book to has thanked me! Enjoy!
