Rating: Summary: this is a book for everybody doubting Review: I've read this book in English even though my native tounge is Swedish. I sat in my best armchair an entire weekend, reading, while my husband was busy doing the laundry, making me meals etc. (yes, he is a true darling, isn't he) This book is a book for everybody wondering if it is possible to get a grip of your life or not.
It's not about getting even, but making your life the way you want it (as far as it's possible).
It gives hope in this cruel world.
I loved it.
Rating: Summary: Growing up is so much easier on television . . . . Review: Author Wally Lamb has written an equisite account of the baby boomer's coming of age; while those under 40 will certainly enjoy it, anyone over the age of 40 will nod silently and smile in recognition. Amid tons of pop-culture allusions, trendy psychology methodology, and real-life trauma, former fat-girl Delores finally learns to feel comfortable in her own skin: a journey so many of us who are still eating our M&Ms in their proper sequence of colors have yet to complete
Rating: Summary: A remarkable journey!! Review: A gripping account of one woman's life and her continual struggle for happiness, despite the overwhelming odds that life had thrown her way.
Lamb's writing will both captivate and enthrall you
Rating: Summary: Triumphant heroine. Review: Wally Lamb has written a book that is triumphant and profound. This book is about life seeking life. As the author clearly understands, sometimes the things that happen in our lives are so tremendously painful and confusing that not living develops an appeal that's irrational but undeniable. I myself have faced the paralysis that accompanies being afraid to live. And like Dolores, overeating and its sense and sanity-numbing effects became my crutch. Wally Lamb's exploration of the dysfunction that such dissassociation from life creates in Dolores reveals and teaches an uncommon compassion. With tremendous finesse, he tells his well-crafted character's story without oversympathizing with or condemning her. This is a difficult book -- but promises inspiration to anyone who understands the struggle of pushing through darkness to the call of the light. If you open your heart to Dolores, you won't be able to resist a sense of gratitude for life's complexity by this book's conclusion
Rating: Summary: BEAUTIFUL!!! Review: This book tackles sensational issues without making a big fuss out of it... the writer wrote about a woman who got raped and obese and insane and healed like she could've been anyone... even me. And to think that the author is a man!!! Wally Lamb, thank you for this experience... you've changed my life
Rating: Summary: Could not put it down!!! Review: It is hard to believe a man wrote is Dolores. Wally really understands a woman better than I can.The more you read the book, the more you become Dolores.Oprah, you made a great choice. On to the next book
Rating: Summary: Triumphant. Lessons in Love. Review: Delores Price travels a journey of love, pain, and renewal. Delores thinks the secret is to just settle for the shape your life takes instead of always waiting and wishing for what might make you happy. Accept what people offer, drink their milkshakes, and take their love. Love is like breathing---you take it in and you let it out
Rating: Summary: So you think your life has been a little on the tuff side.. Review: Have you ever felt like an outcast? If yes, you will have no trouble relating to "Delores". Though she is a charater that is sometimes easy to dislike the more you read the more you grow to feel pity, not only for her but for the majority of charaters. After reading this book you'll feel...like... well.... maybe I dont have it so bad after all
Rating: Summary: A charming and uplifting read. Review: I absolutely loved this book! Dolores Price is a wonderful character, destroyed by the breakup of her parents marriage--carried along by the whirls and eddies of the changing social mores of the 50's, 60's and 70's. Dolores is my contemporary and part of my enthusiasm for this book is due to the loving portrayal of a young woman growing up in the 50's and 60's. I emphasized with her pain, her loneliness, her awkwardness. However, from page one I knew that Dolores was a survivor. No matter how bad things got for Dolores, I just KNEW that somehow she was going to get through and make it. Thank you Wally Lamb for this lovely story of a survivor---I do not know how a man could so totally tap into the psyche of an adolescent female. But, Mr. Lamb, you hit the nail right on the head! Thank you
Rating: Summary: This book changed my life. Review: This book had a profound impact on my life, as well as, a deep insight into my own personality. Wally Lamb could have
been hiding in my closet, must have been to get some of this
material. I have yet to read another novel that so accurately depicts the trials and torments of severly overweight women. I feel this a must read for any women who is now or ever has had a weight problem. How can a middle- aged man write so poignantly and painfully accurate about such a personal subject to many women? Kudos to Wally Lamb, HE'S MY HERO OF THE NINETIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
