Rating: Summary: READ IT Review: I think there's a little bit of Dolores in every woman. Lamb shows us there is always hope, no matter how bad the going gets
Rating: Summary: An excellent, must read Review: This is a must read. Althought many review it as sad and depressing it is real. Delores teaches us to survive. Whales are symbolic of her emotional, spiritual desire to commit suicide in her twenties and later they symbolize rebirth and life in her 40's. As a psychotherapist, I have recommend the book to students who want to learn more of how their clients may have started out in early life, In a quasi functional family yet internally dsyfunctional. Mr. Lamb has been able to campture deep feelings of what it is like to be female, to be a regular American girl and woman with out owning the culturaly encouraged thinness and cheerleader personality with picture perfect family. Delores, as her name implies, has many growing pains, but she does not allow them to knock her down. This is one of the few books that has touched my soul
Rating: Summary: I AM DOLORES PRICE Review: But I am not female. I had to check often. My own life flashed before my eyes when I read "She's Come Undone". It's tough to be fat and smart. Your intelligence geers itself in the wrong direction. You hurt people you love because you love them. One often uses food and Television to escape life. It's always better to live in a world where everything happens to someone else. You lock yourself in a room, armed with potato chips and a couple of chocolate bars you transport yourself to that safe world by a click of a remote control.
This "lifestyle" works out fine until the day something wrong happens. You find yourself drifting in a sea getting hit by waves of angry and laughing people. You suddenly realize that during that time you were "safe" in the room, you had forgotten to grow up.
People do not always end up on a shore. Some decide to let go, but Dolores didn't. Wally Lamb, thank you for giving a hope. Thank you for reminding us that it's never too late to grow up. Thank you for Dolores, and on behalf of Dolores.
I will treasure this book forever.
Rating: Summary: Forrest Frump Review: Current history only serves as a medium through which this character moves much like F.G. So she's pithy, big deal. I'll take Trudi Montag (Stones from the River) or Behind the Scenes at the Museum for coming of age tales any day
Rating: Summary: Same Tired Topic Review: Quite frankly, I am a little tired of stories about a woman's quest to find her "true self." I found this book on a sale table about two years ago. It was $2 (hardback!!). Though I finished the novel, I found it boring and filled with cliches. I learned from my experience with it that books on the sale table are usually there for a reason. When I recently saw it on the bestseller's list I was stunned. It's great that Oprah is encouraging thousands of people to read, but I hope that next time she picks a better book
Rating: Summary: A horror story and a fairy tale in one! Review: Reading "She's Come Undone," by Wally Lamb, was a spiritual awakening for me.
A book has never given me as much as this one has. Sure, I've read books that have supplied me with
entertainment, or an afternoon's cry, but this particular book supplied me with more
feelings and emotions than I could have ever have hoped. This is a book to be studied and treasured. Wally Lamb makes an impressive debut, and I'm so glad Oprah picked it for her book club, or it might not have received the attention that it well deserved.
The 460+ pages chronicle a woman's life and struggles. We see her joy, but also her
pain. A lot of her pain. There are many books that people say that you just can't put down, but in this case, it means extremely convincive writing. There are so many painful
moments in this book, where you just have to put it down. This was such a rewarding experience. I will definitley never look at books in the same light.
Rating: Summary: Insightful Anthropology Review: Use of detail emerges as Wally Lamb's real strength. Because he depicts such vivid places and characters, I was able to imagine coming of age in the '60's and '70's. When I evaluate the book in its time period, I see its merit. For one thing, all of the traumas that Dolores experiences are connected and plausible. It is not uncommon for a woman who is molested to find solace in food and to become obese as a defense against the vulnerability of that victim position. And then all of the self-esteem issues follow. I must say that women in my generation (I grew up a decade later--seventies and eighties) had a much better time of it than did those in Dolores's time. Our culture (even my college dorm--such a hotbed of female politics) was much more inclusive and tolerant than Hooten (?) Hall. I am a high school teacher now and am hoping that we are on a trend--that the "fat girl" is no longer an aberration. My students are not nearly as judgmental as young people were a few generations ago. I find She's Come Undone to be an interesting study of human relationships in an era known for its liberation--not very liberating and tolerant at all
Rating: Summary: I couldn't keep myself from putting it down. Review: I am not one to stop reading a book, even if I am less than enthusiastic about it and I am not one to be offended by controversial topics. For the second time in my life I actually put a book down, not out of boredom which was the reason for the first, but out of repulsion. I only read about fifty pages but found the main character so detestable I had to put it down. My friend who made it though the book informed me I hadn't missed out on anything. I am only greatful I did not purchase the book. The author should have wrote about a boy then he might have had more insight
Rating: Summary: A Novel About Life, A Novel for Everyone Review: Lamb creates a true-to-life masterpiece with this novel. In all of the negative reviews I read, the same comment appeared: the ending was not satisfactory for all poor Delores Price endured. Well, here's a news-flash, life isn't all about happy endings. It's not about soap-opera happily-ever-afters, it's not about the catharthis found in most fiction, and it's not about erasing all of the horrible things in the past. It's about accepting others and yourself and learning to love, and by the end of the book, Delores gets an A+ in each of those areas. I give the book a definite stamp of approval and would recomend it to anyone
Rating: Summary: Can you read while walking? Review: I learned I could! Walking to my bus, catching the elevator; I could not put this book down. I got so caught up in Dolores and the way she stumbled through life. I pitied her, felt sorry for her, was disgusted with her, but constantly rooted for her. Wally Lamb does a pretty amazing job of capturing the "she-thing" and I could visualize each and every bizarre scenario poor Dolores was put in. You'll want to see if she pulls through, too
