Rating: Summary: A TRULY WONDERFUL STORY! Review: When I bought this book, I estimated that it would take me atleast a week to read (with a busy schedule); however, it took only oneevening! I find it extremely amazing that this book was written by a man! Delores was a perfect example of what it can be like to be a girl with a troubled (to say the LEAST) childhood! To those of you who commented that the plot made you SOOOO ANGRY, I just have to say this: CAN A BAD STORY EVOKE THOSE FEELINGS? Her life made me angry at times as well, but that is what a GOOD story can do!
Rating: Summary: Dolores is an amazing character, we can all relate to Review: I think that Wally Lamb has captured the essence of thiswoman. I feel like I know Dolores as a friend. I can't get over howmuch I could relate to this characters experiences and trials. Wonderfully written and someone manages to be remarkably funny and tragic. I think that I will hold Dolores Price in my heart for the rest of my life. Lamb should be allowed to stand among the greats, like Margaret Atwood in creating a book that is about a fantastic female character not a story. I think that every woman in the US can find a bit of Dolores in herself.
Rating: Summary: It was ok but...is the best you can come up with Oprah! Review: I purchased this book not knowing that it was an Oprahselection. Gee where was I? I go to work all day!!! Anyway, whenthe check-out person informed me of the book's status, I guess I just expected too much. As a formerly (and still borderline) fat person, I can sympathize with Delores, but let's hope that most people with problems can find more positive ways to solve them.
Rating: Summary: refreshing Review: THIS NOVEL WAS BREATHTAKING AND REALISTIC IT GAVE A SENSE OFSADNESS AND PLEASURE. AS SOON AS I PICKED IT UP I WAS UNABLE TO PUT ITDOWN. I HAVE GIVEN IT TO SEVERAL FRIENDS TO READ AND THEY ARE AMAZED THAT IT WAS WRITTEN BY A MAN. AS I WAS. IF ANYONE FINDS THE BOOK A POOR ONE THEN I SUGGEST TO NOT READ THE NEXT ONE AND COMPLAIN ABOUT IT LAKING SOMETHING THAT YOU NEED. MR.LAMB DID A WONDERFUL JOB AND AM LOOKING FOWARD TO READ "FORGIVE ME" HIS LATEST PROJECT
Rating: Summary: Delores Price: At Once Pathetic and Familiar Review: The story of Delores Price is at once pathetic and familiar. There are several honestly and realistically presented occurances inher life story with which anyone would be able to identify. Countless times while reading this book I wished I could grab Delores and steer her on the right path, the frustration eminating from life lessons from which I wish I had been spared. She's Come Undone forces the reader, in a roundabout way, to examine her own life and mistakes. By relating a personal situation to a similar one Delores finds herself in, we are able to view it objectively. Anyone who reads this story may become Delores' therapist in a sense and as an end result, develop the ability to view personal problems more effectively. She's Come Undone is pathetic because at times it is all too familiar.
Rating: Summary: Dumb and completely unbelievable. Review: I want my money back! This books was utterly ridiculous. Ibought this, not only because it was Oprah's choice, but because ofall the hype, "you won't believe a man wrote it" etc. It was SOOOO dumb it was painful. There was nothing even female about this character. Instead the author reinforces stereotypes of female sexualy and psychology, giving a voice to a sterotype rather than a character. Though I finished it, I tuned out about half-way through. I WANTED to like this book, but insulting, ludicrous plots and dialogues kept getting in the way. The only reason this got a 3 was because the author does have a decent enough writing style. Now if he could only learn a thing or two about character development...
Rating: Summary: What a sorry excuse for literature! Review: The only reason I did not stop reading this bookand throw it out, was that I kept thinking thestory would begin on the next page - it never did! I pity the author's sad images of what makes a story, and what constitutes life. All that paper used up, and nothing to say. Worst book of the year (at least)! Bill Barth, Sr. Gaithersburg, Maryland
Rating: Summary: An Adult Judy Blume Book!!! Review: I loved this book and I hated this book. It read like the oleJudy Blume books that I grew up on. I found myself sympathetic forDolores and angry at her. It has been a while since I read a book that
drew me into a main character like this book does. She was real. Yes, she had major faults that many may find
pathetic but, sadly, she exemplifies what many women go through everyday. It makes a great "by the pool read" for the summer.
Rating: Summary: A good read Review: Dolores is an unforgettable character -- and let's not forgetthat's exactly what she is -- a character. She's not Everywoman -- notevery fat woman, every rape survivor. every child of divorce. She's one author's creation of a woman with multiple problems. The book is a good read. I especially liked the ending -- it was hopeful but not too neat. Readers who liked this book might like _Walking Across Egypt_ by Clyde Edgerton.
Rating: Summary: A woman's emergence from beneath the fat that strangles her Review: A poignant story interestingly written, from the perspective ofa young woman coming of age in the midst of fast food, television, anda not so "Brady Bunch" family life. Dolores Price's pain is one shared by millions of people, however hers is uniquely traumatic in the fact that she is not only obese, but rage filled at her father who abandoned the family, and her mother who took a mental leave of absence. The story unfolds, revealing Dolores post-destructive period in a slightly unrealistic manner considering the destruction she faced in her life
