This book is a must read.
Rating: Summary: In My opinion Review: I was 14 when I read this book. It was the first "big" book that I have read. I recently read "I know this much is true" I thought that the book was good. I couldn't put it down. I don't know if it confused me because I was 14, or because it jumped around. Parts of it were unrealistic, but it's a book...and you shouldn't be so picky. Let your imagination go, and read the book.
Rating: Summary: OUTSTANDING! Review: One of the best novels I've ever read. I couldn't put it down - and I CAN'T believe it was written by a man! A must read for young and old. READ THIS BOOK! IT IS WONDERFUL! It can change the way you look at life!
Rating: Summary: A Worth While Read Review: If you pay attention to all the negative reviews on this book and don't read it you're defeniately missing out. Usually all the negative reviews never finished this book. You have to read the whole book in order to really like it. It will teach you some worth while lessons and make you think about some stuff. I will warn you though-he is blunt and out there, and holds nothing back. You might even get sick at your stomach a couple of times and have to stop, but don't. By the way - she doesn't have sex with a whale!-something that was put on one of the reviews.
Rating: Summary: Depressing but still a good read! Review: While this book was a good read, that is it kept my attention, I'm still trying to decide if I liked the book. Delores stays with you. Her life though is so sad. The writing itself is superb. I guess the way I come out on this is this--If you are Brady Bunch type person, this book is probably not for you.
Rating: Summary: This book pulls you in... Review: This has to be one of my favorite books. I honestly could not put this book down. Wally Lamb creates a character that becomes part of you. It is almost like you are with Dolores every step of her journey. After a few pages you become engulfed in the book. I gave this book to my roommate and she read it in one day. I have also discussed this book with a few of my friends and they have all said it was a great book. I don't have many books I recommend nor do I write many reviews about the countless books I read but this one is such a wonderful book!
Rating: Summary: READ THIS REVIEW Review: This book is the best book I've ever read in my life. And you can't tell me it's because of all the hype surrounding it because I'm a 12 year old girl, and 5 years ago, well you get the picture. In fact ,when I read this book, a couple of months ago, I had no idea about all the hype.To tell you the truth,I just picked it up because I liked the cover design.Well, after years of Judy Blume, this is the first real book I've read. And my oh my, what a book.Wally Lamb is absolutely brilliant. When I was reading the book, it didn't even feel like reading a book.He so intricately captured the feelings, the personalities, the fears, the dreams, the hopes, and heartbreaks of the characters, that I got to know these characters, and at times, it felt as though I could reach out and talk to them. This book is nothing short of spectacualar. In this book (written first person), the main character, Dolores Price undergoes her first emotional bruise at a very young age, when after witnessing her father's abusive side, has to witness something even more painful, perhaps-his departure. When her father leaves, she is sent to live with her grandmother(her mother, who has previosuly undergone a miscarriage, is sent to a mental hospital).Dolores strongly dislikes her grandmother, for they have nothing in common, and Dolores hates following her strict rules.Dolores is sent to a Catholic School, where she remains as lonely as ever, as she has a hard time making friends, and feels as though she does not fit in.Soon, her mother "recovers", and moves in with Dolores and her mother. After a few years, Dolores, her mother, and grandmother, are accompanied by two fellow tennants (with whom they agree to share with the second floor of their apartment). The tennants are a young couple,Jack and Rita Speight. The two families become friends, often coming over for supper and sharing stories. And with Dolores's growing lonliness, she finds comfort in Jack Speight, who seems to take Dolores seriously. He soon starts driving her to and from school, listening to her woeful stories, and telling her secrets of his own.One day, Jack is driving Dolores home from school.Dolores is thirteen now.He is quite drunk, and Dolores feels uncomfterable right away. But instead of going straight home,Jack has something else in mind.He takes Doloers to a shelter for dangerous dogs. And up against a brick wall, jack speight, with her clothing, rips away every shred of innosence, happiness, and youth away from 13 year old dolores price. The way Wally Lamb so vividly paints this painful picture for you will make you want to cry.He so stunningly builds up the climax.Ever since Dolores and Jack become "friends", you can sense where it's all going to lead. In the next courses of her life, Dolores will become an obese, mentally depressed teen. She will witness the loss of her mother while in her late teens. She will be rediculed and used in college, from where she will eventually escape, only to plant herself in a mental hospital for the next seven years. But don't worry, Dolores will find her way out. There's no fairy tale ending here, but there is a human ending.A somewhat peaceful ending. For those bazillions of people who said this book was depressing, it's not.Maybe it is, because they're so used to reading danielle steel fluff, but trust me, this book is not depressing.Tragic, yes.Heartbraking yess, pitiful,oh you bet ya, bu at the same time this book will evoke many other feelings, such as warmth, humor, hope, and anger. And we get a lot of those in life don't we. This book is brilliant in every sense of the word. Not a thousand words could describe how brilliant this book is.It will make you laugh, cry, and stay up till three a.m on a weekday, trust me.If you have not read this book, all I can say, is just do it.Ignore the hype surrounding it, and just take in what really counts. The book, the writing. This book, as corny as what I say next will sound, comes alive in your hands. There's no exageration there.
Rating: Summary: Incredible book that pulls you in! Review: I was amazed by Dolores!! So many times I wanted to slap her, hug, give her a high five, and tell her everything would be ok. This book is wonderful and exhausting all at the same time. So many things happen to poor Dolores that makes you wonder what more can this poor girl take. The only problem I had with this book is that it seemed as if Lamb was adding in little historic events just to let us know that he knows history. The novel starts off in the 60's and Lamb definitely lets us know that. Its seems more that he is writing a history book instead of a courageous story about the struggles of a young woman. This novel is a great read about one woman's horrific life. She's loses and gains so much throughout her life nad it shows us the strength that we all can find inside of us.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down! Review: I have not enjoyed every Oprah book selection, but She's Come Undone is among my favorites. I could not put this book down. I still cannot believe that a male wrote this book. If you enjoyed White Oleander or Deep End of the Ocean, I believe that you will also enjoy this book about the life of a troubled girl. Hilarious book!
Rating: Summary: You Must Read This! Review: This is truly one of the best books I have ever read. Right from the get go, it grabs the reader and pulls you into the world of Dolores. I could not put this masterpiece down once I started reading it. It's been two years since I read this, and I still find myself constantly thinking about the sad, yet utterly compelling life of Dolores. I will say that this book is not for everyone. I think the key to being overtaken by it, is that the reader must identify with Dolores, otherwise the profound genius of this stunning novel is lost upon them. But for those of you who do know what it feels like to be Dolores, grab this book, settle down in bed with a pint of ice cream, a bag of chips, and a couple candy bars, it's going to be one great experience.
