Rating: Summary: Angry Review: I give this book a 2 instead of a 1 because it kept me interested enough to finish it. Dolores was the most unsympathetic character I've encountered in some time. Mr. Lamb's portrayal of a self-pitying, whiny, disillusioned, spineless woman who never faces reality just left me angry. I could not identify with any of her emotions throughout the book...when I found out that the author was a man it all made sense. The man/woman, Mars/Venus theory applies here. Some stories are better told by a member of the same sex.
Rating: Summary: Pop-fiction - not serious literature to say the least Review: I admit, I read the whole book fairly quickly. It's the equivalent of a tv mini-series: a mindless diversion, but certainly won't stimulate thought or change your life. The characters are trite, predictable cliches. The symbolism (i.e. the whales) is so obvious and overdone that it's absolutely insulting to an educated reader. This book will appeal to those who like reading Jackie Collins, Michael Crichton, etc. It's not the kind of book that will be taught in literature classes 50 years from now (unless as an example of poor writing!). It is evident that Wally Lamb absorbed too much of the writing of his students over the years...it is written like a young-adult novel. It was the "Forrest Gump" of literature - appeals to a mass market by being superficial and going for the predictable emotion-grabbers like the AIDS-infected lovable teacher, the suave neighbor who is a bad guy in disguise, the bi-racial son raised by a single father, etc. Predictable and contrived from start to finish. If you want a truly cathartic tale about a woman's life, read "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath or "Cat's Eye" by Margaret Atwood instead. If you want an enjoyable coming-of-age tale, read "Catcher in the Rye" by JD Salinger. Don't waste your time on this cliched drivel.
Rating: Summary: wonderful Review: First off, don't dis Oprah. We all have diffrent opinions but don't blame others.Anyway, I'm 13 years old. I read this 465 page book in 2 days. No joke. It was wonderful. People who hate it don't understand the book. They evedently don't like normal characters. Who likes perfect people. I don't. Dolores was me. She's everyone in a way. Read it again and never throw out a book!
Rating: Summary: The book, She's Come Undone, blew me away! Review: I thought She's Come Undone was the best book I've read in a long time. I laughed, I cried, and I could relate to the feelings of Delores. The one thing that surprises me most, though, is that it was written by a man! Wally Lamb began with a young girl, in fact just a baby, and took us through her life. He took us through everything she experienced, felt, and saw. Her quest for true happiness was evident but she never let the world around her see that. She was to be tough, strong, and couldn't let anyone in to her world in fear of getting hurt or hurting them. Her constant battle with her weight and why the weight stays with her greatly influences the situations she goes through in her life. She thinks no one could ever love her because she is, simply, too fat and disgusting. Her pride and joy in her life is her long and straight, golden hair. Underneath all of her resentment for the weight and guilt and anger, Delores Price is truelly a beautiful person. I think that there is a little of her in all of us.
Rating: Summary: It's the GREATEST book I have ever read! Review: I am only 14 years old, but I truly loved this book! I couldn't put it down, and read it only in a couple of days. It is unbelievable that a man could write so well in the eyes of a woman. Where's the 2nd book? I have to have more! :-)
Rating: Summary: Awesome Book Review: Dolores is a hoot! I finished this book in record time because I could not put it down. It is hard to believe that a man wrote this book. I would highly recommend this book. Once you read it you will give to a friend and make them read it.
Rating: Summary: Life to the nth degree Review: She's Come Undone was a great read. I devoured this story on a crosss country flight, too enthralled to consider braving the airplane bathroom. That a male could write in this woman's persona is nothing short of amazing. For months, I avoided reading She's Come Undone, because I didn't want to endure a tale about a woman's battle against obesity. I was pleasantly surprised to find the story was life, only exaggerated by an order of magnitude. Any American female will be touched by the truth in this tale.
Rating: Summary: Can't stop thinking about this book!!! Review: Could not put this book down. Well worth your money to read this very detailed, colorful novel about a woman, from early childhood to adulthood. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: Start reading again with this book Review: Recommended by a dear friend. Touches your heart as you share in the emotional rollercoaster ride of Dolores Price in her long struggle to the books triumphant ending.
