Rating: Summary: Identifiable Review: In his novel "She's Come Undone" Wally Lamb creates his character Dolores Price and models her life from situations he has carefully researched. He explores human nature, the mistakes we make, the losses we suffer and our incredible ability to rise above all and repair our lives. Lamb argues, through his literature, that in order to renovate our past we must first step confidently into the future. "She's Come Undone" is an unmistakable masterpiece. Lamb uses the mind of a woman to explore his character Dolores Price's life. He gives painstaking detail to her childhood and her past to help the reader understand the decisions she has made. From her abusive mother to her issues of abandonment with her father, Lamb brings Dolores to life, making the reader empathetic and anxious at the same time. It is breathtaking to see a character make connections with her past, enabling her to confront her pain, her imperfections, her family's dysfunction's as well as her own misconceptions about life. I found this book to be incredibly inspiring, even though it was trite at times. As I read of Dolores' life events I found myself cringing at the pain that leapt off the page. It seems as though Lamb is trying to teach his reader a life's lesson about the fragile psyche of a woman. There are aspects of Dolores' character for any woman to identify with, and also some that men could learn from.
Rating: Summary: Great Read Review: I loved this book and keep re-reading it. Hilarious, but thought-provoking and quietly moving. Great book for women to enjoy and appreciate.
Rating: Summary: facinating life chronicle Review: Dolores Price lives the sad life. From her first days as a young child things have not been going well for her. Her younger brother was killed before he was born and her mother never recovered and was sent to an insane assylum. Her parents then divorced when she was 10 and she and her mother moved in with her grandmother. In this new house she was violently raped by her neighbor who she thought was her friend. She spends the next years growning larger and not growing stronger. She has given up all hope that she will ever be someone.Until one fateful day has Dolores face her fears and become a better person than anyone ever thought she could be.Wally Lambs first novel is a literary tour de force, better than all the thrillers. Our thirst to find out what happens from her narrative from when she is four until when she is forty will ahve us cheering for her to do better. She's Come Undone is a terrific novel, one we can hope for many more of.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: It's nice to see a male writer capture a woman's voice so well that it's hard to believe a man wrote the words that Lamb did. Still, Dolores' feistiness doesn't make up for the book's other faults. The writing lacks any sort of subtlety: every time Dolores makes a realization, the narration kind of hits you over the head with it until even a six-year-old could get it. It was kind of insulting. Then there was the constant victimization of Dolores by man after man; it got really really annoying watching Dolores hang on to the men victimizing her. She seems feisty, but at times she was so pathetic I winced.
Rating: Summary: Worth Reading Review: This is a short review (sorry!). It is an interesting story, well told. The thing I find most remarkable about it is that Wally Lamb is one of the few male authors I have run across who is capable of writing a female character. This is as rare as teeth on a duck.
Rating: Summary: There's a bit of Dolores in all of us Review: Dolores Price is the main character of what has proven to be one of my all-time favorite books. Written by Wally Lamb, it's almost impossible for the reader to remember that a man is the author! He captures the female essence to such a degree that one wonders if the book was ghost-written! But I digress--we first meet Dolores when she is just a child and follow her life through her dysfunctional family, her relationship with her parents and grandmother, and how at age 13, she succumbs to a horrible personal event. This event changes her forever, and we sadly watch her become obese, something she struggles with through her young adulthood and her stay in a mental institution. She goes to college on her mother's wish and we see her experience one of the hardest transitions a young person can make. Finally Dolores meets a man but the twist on it is both humorous and sad. Dolores goes through the life ritual of marriage, and also divorce. Will she ever meet the man of her dreams? Will her internal struggles ever be put to rest? The only bad part abou this book is that it ended. I would love to have followed Dolores until her death, but all good things must end. All of us can relate to a part of Dolores, whether it be our family lives, our health, relationships with the opposite sex, experimentation, mental health, or any of it. It's not onlyl fiction, there is a large part of it that is daily life. This is a book that should be read by everyone.
Rating: Summary: phenomenal book! Review: I am an avid reader, and this is just about the best novel I have ever read. Dolores is a complex character, one who I felt a range of emotions toward as I read the book. Wally Lamb does not spare her from terribly difficult experiences that led me to feel sad and sorry for her, nor does he spare her from making foolish mistakes that made me want to say to her, "Stop! Don't do it!" Like other reviewers, I was surprised and impressed that a male author had so completely and believably captured the female protagonist. It is very well written--even minor characters like her college roommate are distinctive and memorable, and her emotional growth throughout the book is well chronicled and mesmerizing to read about. I recommend this book very, very highly.
Rating: Summary: A psychological portrait... Review: She's come undone is the psychological portrait of Dolores Price, the novel's main character who grows from childhood to womanhood throughout the course of the story. Dolores is plagued by a plethora of unfortunate incidents including her father's abandonment, a rape at 13, her obesity and binge eating, and her mental breakdown, amongst other things. Wally Lamb successfully relays Dolores' emotional journey throughout all of these events and keeps the reading curious about what could possibly happen next to this emotionally vulnerable girl. Although nearly 500 pages long, I did enjoy reading this book since it seemed to be almost a review of psych 101 in some sense. I found character development to be excellent throughout the novel which was another plus. Although I can see where some readers may find some of the story's twists and turns to be implausible, Lamb writes with enough finesse to make these unlikely occurrences seem believable within the context of the story. While She's Come Undone is depressing and somewhat disturbing at times, the last few chapters will leave even a cynical reader with a sense of hope and enlightenment.
Rating: Summary: She's Come Undone Review: My first Wally Lamb book! My next book will be by Wally Lamb. I cannot believe a man wrote this book. It captures a womas spirit. This book is so WONDERFUL!! You MUST read it! I was so there! I was part of Deloris Price's life. I could not put this book down! I just loved it. I cannot express how much I loved this book! You must give it a try!
Rating: Summary: Great read, but tragic characters... Review: I kept asking myself throughout this book, do I even like Delores? Matter of fact, all the characters are so complex and dysfunctional that I couldn't decide who I liked or didn't. This kept me interested throughout the book because I couldn't wait to see what was gonna happen next or what crazy thing she would do.
