Rating: Summary: Brian's Winter Review: In Brian's Winter, Brian is left stranded in the wilderness in Canada. He only has so long, before winter starts and he must begin to prepare quickly. Brian builds a shelter and keeps a fire lit inside to keep it nice and warm. He leans how to hunt and survive on his own. Brian has had a few problems with animals. Brian has made friends with some animals and has had some terrifying, near death experiences with animals. But that didn't keep him from surviving. Since the weather was 30 below zero, he has to make sure he doesn't stay outside very long because he could freeze to death. It's been months since Brian has seen a person at all. He has found some sort of track in the snow. He knows that it's too far out to be anyone. But what could it be from? Now that you know what the book is about and the main points of it, I will tell my personal opinion on the book. I thought this was a very good book. One of the things I liked most about the book was how even though I didn't read the first book, it still let me know what was going on in the beginning of Brian's Winter. It was very suspenseful also. Which is good for types of books like this. I always wanted to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. I would give this book a four out of five for my rating. I would rate it a four because some of it was a little confusing. The ending wasn't very good either, but since you have not read it yet, I wont give it away. But I am looking forward to the second book 'The River.'
Rating: Summary: Brian's Winter Review: Jenna Alfano April 30, 2003 3AAs you know, thirteen- year-, old Brain Robeson was rescued in the book Hatchet, but what if Brian was not rescued. What if Brain had to learn to survive in the freezing cold in the Canadian winter with only a hatchet? It is extremely crucial that Brian takes everything he has learned and uses it to his best interests. In the book, Hatchet Brain came across many dangerous obstacles and in the process learned how to survive in the wilderness but now it is even more vital that Brain learns how to stay alive because now Brain is going to have to live through the treacherous winter and the Canadian wilderness. Brain's Winter was an outstanding book. I have no complaints, but I do admit Gary Paulsen does leave you hanging. Do not worry though because in the book The River he explains everything. I thought this book was excellent. This book definitely lives up to Hatchet. I rate Brain's Winter an 8 out of 10 because it is an exceptionally outstanding book as well as Hatchet considering survival books are not particularly, what you would call my favorite type novels. The reason why I give this book a high rating is that Gary Paulsen is an extraordinary writer. Maybe, because most of the stuff he writes about he has experienced himself one-way or another throughout his life. He is so detailed as if he knows exactly what he is talking about. That is what makes this book so interesting. I definitely recommend it.

Rating: Summary: Brian's Winter book review Review: Brian's Winter The title of this book is Brian's Winter, by Gary Paulsen. This book is a realistic fiction book. The main character is Brian Robeson, who is 13 years old and was on his way to visit his father in Canada on a plane, but the plane crashed and the pilot died. So, Brian has no way of calling anyone for help and his parents think he is dead. Then, Brian is starting to use his survival skills and has made it through the summer and is getting ready for winter. Brian has to kill animals and skin them, in order to eat and stay warm. Brian is probably not very familiar with doing this kind of activity. Since winter is coming, Brian will need to learn how to survive or be ready for death. He has to stay warm and eat, but he is stranded out in the middle of nowhere. Brian can't come in contact with anyone and needs to kill animals by himself and skin them to stay warm. Throughout this book Brian comes into conflict with other animals such as wolves, a deer, a bear, and the almighty moose. Which the moose has a big part in this book. I liked this book a lot. It had a lot of details that made this book very easy to understand and picture in my mind as it went on. I also liked how Brian was trying to make friends with the animals and just how he is surviving in the wilderness is what I like best about the book. For Brian's Winter I would give this book a 9 out of 10 because of how the book was very detailed and easy to understand.
Rating: Summary: Brian's Winter Review: This book is a great survival novel it really helps people understand the tools and bravery needed to survive in the wild. Brian (the main character) is going to start a new journey, a journey through the season of winter. Brain is slowly catching the little hints nature is dropping him as summer comes to an end. After the first snow hits Brian begins to think about food and how he is going to hunt he knows that he can not survive on rabbits alone and the deer lasted a long time so now he wants a bigger kill one that will last him for months so he sets out. Brian starts to construct a more winter efficient shelter and a war bow and lance for protection from big game. Brian started out with very little such as a hatchet a aircraft survival pack which contained a .22 caliper rifle with 50 shots, a hunting knife with a compass in the handle, cooking pots and pans, silverware, matches, 2 butane lighters, a sleeping bag, first aid kit, a cap fishing line, lures and freeze dried food. Which helped in the beginning but did not really help in the long run. I think that over all this book was pretty good but I still think that he could have been out of the forest quicker if he would have thought about it long enough. I think that on a scale of 1-10 I would give this book an over all rating of 5 because it really helps I'm sure many people that have gotten caught in a bind in the wilderness. I think that if he would gather up food and packed it all up he could have started walking and found some thing or some one that could help him get home. Or if he would have walked like 20 miles away and set fire to the forest most likely people would have come out to put it out and he would have been saved or even spelled out HELP or S.O.S using trees a passing airplane could have seen it and saved him. These are the only things that really bothered me about this book other wise this book was pretty good.
Rating: Summary: Brian's Winter Review: Cassie Alexander Reading A-1 Brian's Winter Brian's Winter is a riveting survival story of a young boy's adventure through the wild. You will read of the many discovers Brian makes along the way. The decision he makes and how he over comes the wilderness. How he is able to feed himself and make a shelter to live in during he's time spent there. Read the mistakes that Brian has learned and how he deals with being alone, so far away from he's family. I don't read much but I'm the kind of person that likes to read mystery, fantasy, love story's etc. Occasionally I do find a book like this one that keeps me interested in survival and it makes me want to finish it. The book is a page-turner it's like what happens next, you just can't wait. I personally rate this book on a 1-10 scale (1 is bad, 10 is very good). This book to me is a 10, I loved the book that much. The whole idea of the book was great. The idea of a young man going thought the wild show's how strong one can be when Put in danger. How he makes weapon and the knowledge he has is amazing. The strength he has to go on and never stop because he knows someday they will find him.
Rating: Summary: Brian's Winter Review: Brian's Winter A 13-year-old boy stranded in the woods, by himself with no survival skills. A terrible plane crash left him alone to survive in the wilderness but his worst enemy is just being born...winter. Brian realizes that the killer cold is approaching, sneaking up on him from all around. He learns some survival skills by tying to stay worm and to make a shelter for the winter. Thanks to his nuclear pet device, which is a skunk that Brian named Betty, Brian defeats the attack of a bear. His weapons get better as he makes a war bow and some big, strong arrows for protection and decides to hunt a bigger game. False gunshot like sounds keep Brian's heart racing. He listens, waits and hopes for another person to appear in this lonely world. As he sets out to explore the woods he sees a line. This line, made on the snow could be Brian's first contact with a person for a very long time. Brian races towards the line and is surprised by what he finds. What I liked most about this book was its suspenseful moments and those breathtaking descriptions of the world in which Brian lived. The story was full of action and surprise. This book also gave the reader a lot of helpful tips for survival. In a scale of one through five I would give this book a rating of four and a half out of five for its outstanding action, suspense and wonderful storyline.
Rating: Summary: Brian's Winter Review: Brian's Winter Brian's Winter is about a boy named Brian that had been in a plane crash previously in the book "Hatchet." With no were to go but the wilderness Brian is forced to survive in the dark forests, cold winter nights, and difficult days of survival. Brian lives in the forests of Canada for 96 days. In this book you can learn the many ways of survival that Brian had used to survive. While Brian was alone he had to keep himself warm at the cold nights and occupied in the day usually by hunting for food supply or making clothes form the hides of the animals. But the only things that Brian are left with from the plane crash area gun with fifty shells-a survival .22 rifle-, matches, two butane lighters, a sleeping bag and foam pad, a first-aid kit with scissors, a cap that said Cessna, fishing line, lures, hooks and sinkers, and several packets of freeze dry blood, and last but not least I personally liked the book. I liked all of the ways of survival that Brain used dealing with food use, keeping warm in the winter, and surviving in the wilderness getting use to the animals and boundaries of other animals. I however didn't really like the ending cause it just wasn't that exciting. It was too dull I thought. The theme of the story is survival. The next book in this series is called The River. It is about Brian(from Hatchet and Brian's Winter) and he is now a tour guide showing groups of people how he had survived in the wilderness and taking them on wild adventures as he had done before.
Rating: Summary: Brian's Winter Review: Brain's Winter is about this boy named Brain who gets stranded in the woods after a plane crash. Brain had to build his own shelter and find his own food to survive because no one was around to help him. He also had to deal with animals attacking him and the temperature being so cold. Brain has used animal furs to make clothes so he kept warm during the day and night. In the book Brain's Winter I liked how Brain was so young and he knew how to start a fire. I was surprised he knew how to build himself a shelter, kill an animal to get food, and also that he survived for 96 days on his own. I disliked how he described how the wolves killed the moose. The rating this book that I would give this novel would be 4 in a half out of 5. Besides that fact I liked how everything else was described like how the tree's were exploding. I also liked how the writer had Brian be a young person and how he could survive on his own in the wilderness. If anyone likes suspense in a book I would encourage him or her to read Brain's Winter.
Rating: Summary: Brian Winter Review: Brian Winter Brian's Winter is a realistic fiction that tells about a survival situation. In this book Brian Robeson is a boy who is trying to survive the Canadian wilderness winter. There are challenges for him on this path. He would have to over come some pretty hard tasks to get to his goal of being rescued. He would have to make new weapons, kill some different animals, and used their winter traits to move and live in the winter times. For instance he would kill moose and deer so that he can have something to eat in the cold winter. He would also look at how a beaver house creates his so he can make his house weather proof. Last some of the new tool that he had made is the War bow and a lance. Will Brian get through the winter well or will he die trying to get through it. You will have to read this book to find out. This was my first survival book and I thought that it was pretty good. The author of this book is Gary Paulsen and he had done a good job on it. Because in put a picture in my head when I was reading it. Most of the time he had describe well and I would see it clearly. In only little part he could of done more because I could not see anything. This is what I had thought of this book. If I would have to rate this book it would be a four out of five. This book would receive this because it has good descriptions but some places could use some more. Also Gary could have made the book more realistic. In this book he get hurt but not badly hurt that he could not move. That is why I give this book that rating. By Brian Tarter
