Summary: A must for anyone who has tried all the other diets!!!!!!
Review: I am 49 years old, have always had a slight weight problem. However, when I re-married at 38, I also started eatng low fat foods and everything else that was supposed to be good for you. Well, to say the least I did not lose weight, but in fact gained over 64 pounds over the next 11 years. I also have high cholestral and developed high blood pressure in that same time period. I have tried every diet out there. Even tried Redux when it was on the market. This worked for a short period, however once off the pill, the weight came back, plus some. I recently had a doctors appointment in Feb., he advised me that I should buy Dr. Atkins book and try it. It took me another month before I finally did purchase it, and I started on March 3rd. In this time,(6 weeks) I have now lost 27 lbs. The first week, I did have very bad headaches. After the first week though, everything has been fine. I no longer go back to work after lunch and feel tired. I now have more energy then I can remember for a long time. I am not hungry, which has really surprised me as this is the first time I have ever dieted and can honestly say that its easy. I am able to pass up all the goodies at work and at home. Eating out takes a little longer picking out what to eat, but it can be done. The book has been a life saver for me. I just had a stress test this past Sat. and my doctors is pleased with the results. Mr. Atkins has written a book that anyone can follow. He does have a lot of medical in the book and at first I did not feel that he needed it all, however I have re-read the book again and have gained for all he has written about. I also bought the pocket size carb counter and keep it in my purse. I wish that I had bought this book years ago. It makes sense and IT WORKS!

Summary: Good advice; bad writing style; Protein Power is much better
Review: Three friends of mine recommended this book because each had lost almost 40 pounds each (and continuing to lose weight!) Well, I have 272 pounds on a 6'0" frame (to use some jargon Dr. Atkins uses <g>).

I read the whole book and started..unfortunately an illness stopped the induction diet for a while but I've started (I got a flu virus so decided to hold off to recoup).

I felt the writing was a bit hard to read because Dr. Atkins constantly berates the AMA and defends his ideas. While the AMA might be wrong, I felt it took away too much from what I wanted to know--how to do the diet.

I'm almost done with another book, Protien Power which puts things much more succinctly and lays out the scientific reasonings for the diet much more clearly. Also it gets into the mechanics and dos and don'ts of a high-protient/low-carbo diet much more that Dr. Atkins did. With the Protien Power I feel I've got someone who can tell me why things are happening and exactly what to do and expect. Dr. Atkins writing style is a much cloudier.

So on content, I give the book a 5. On clarity and writing style I give it a 2.

On "ease of use" I give it a 2.

So, overall, I rated it a 3.

Summary: This is more than a diet
Review: This is DIFFERENT!! There is no pain, no hunger, no deprevation and I do recommend this book and this diet. For the first time in my life I am not addicted to food!! Believe it or not tho I have only lost 4 lbs on it in 4 weeks but I have seen what it has done for family members/ I HAVE A QUESTION if anyone can answere that has been on this diet....How important is caffeine intake to this diet? I drink about 4 cups of Starbucks in the a.m. Could this much coffee sabotage this diet>>??> Also my weight has fluctuated in the past due to temporary diets. thanks margomack@aol.com

Summary: Works great whether you need to loose a little or a lot!
Review: The previous comment from April 7 was not true for me & many others. I only had 10 lbs to loose & the Atkins diet worked great!! It is not only for the obese, it is for anyone who wants to feel & look better than they did on the high carb foods. I lost 10 lbs in less than a month & I look better than I did eating a low protein diet. I don't miss the bread, pasta or sweets. This way of eating is alot more fun & satisfying. I think alot of the negative comments come from people who haven't thoroughly read the book or quit because they were going through temporary carb withdrawal. That nasty feeling just shows how addicted you are to the sugar. Just like any addict you may have to go through a few days of bad. Hang in there & you'll be free of your addiction & feel proud of your self.

Summary: It doesn't work for everyone!
Review: What the book doesn't tell you is that if you are not obese, you will not see the results described. I have been in ketosis/lipolysis for 3 months and have lost only 3 pounds. I couldn't understand what was happening and my doctor said that the diet works only for people who are significantly overweight (I wanted to lose only 10-15 pounds). Also, my blood pressure went through the roof! My previously obese sister had a great experience, but not me!

Summary: Convincing
Review: Hello, My husband and I successfully tried this diet. We both lost mush weight quickly. At first you seem to crave the carbs and almost experience and electrical change in your body. Next it seemed unbelievable how an uncanning feeling of lightness, not as in measuring the mass of your body, but as the diffrence in feeling very weighted after thanks giving, compared to feeling lite after eating salad. Even if you weighed the same you walk lighter! It's bazaar, but true. Also after 3 weeks you realize your not even hungry and your thinking becomes more tuned in. We found ourselves remember aquaintences,ph#, just everything better. Also the 3:00 dead tired feeling gotta have a tea/soda feeling disappeared. Everyone noticed our diffrence in appearance, and having 4 children we seemed quite lavished to splurge on such protein selections for ourselves only and made our at home meal, An excepted private dinning experience,since our children also saw the success.It's east to dine out on this diet. Now Guess what? With such success can you emagine we got off of it? At first no weight gain....Than as we aquired a taste for the starches again,,, the swelling appeared, the overwhelming feeling, the forgetfullness,than the 3;00 tired syndrome. Wow now we've started to gain backk... I 7-10, my husband about 15. His stomach is back! Were both exhausted all the time and we eat alot of protein plus starches and have decided to start a gain. We should have never gone off.I am now on day 2 of the induction diet Wish me luck....Feeling lighter soon.

Summary: Perfect diet, I can do this forever!
Review: I have lost 28 lbs. in 5 months. It works. Don't worry about what everyone else says about the diet. I am very healthy, I never experienced any pain or headaches when I went on the diet. My Dr says I am very healthy. He even said that it was a good diet. It has been out for over 20 years, and I haven't heard of anyone dying from it, have you? I think people are making excuses when they complain about that. If you are dropping weight like crazy, and all you experience is a little back pain or a headache, then what is the problem? If you were to go outside and run a few miles, I am sure an obese person would experience pain, so quit griping about that. I am a 27 year old male, who decided to try it out. It works. In the beginning, you have to keep focused. It is hard because you can't have bread or pasta. But ask yourself if that piece of bread is worth the fat that hangs over your waist, or look in the mirror and you see those love handles. Is that worth getting full off of macaroni? I don't miss any of those foods anymore. And to be honest, I cheated the whole week of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and numerous other times, but I still keep losing. Do this diet..you will be happy!!

Summary: 12 months = 248 lbs. lost !!!
Review: This is an update from Dec 14 1998. Well, its been just over 12 months now since I read and started Dr. Atkins Diet and I've lost 248 lbs. !!! Using a more accurate method of determining weight I discoved that my beginning weight was closer to 600 lbs than it was to 520 as I had originally thought. (hey its hard to find a scale that can weigh something over a 1/4 a ton) That is just a hair over 20 lbs. a month. At 323 lbs right now I figure I need to lose about another 140 lbs. - 7 MONTHS !!!! Its the beginning of april now, Halloween is my birthday, so by my 36 birthday I should be real close to my goal weight. If you are thinking about going on this diet, do it now !! Summary: SORRY I QUIT
Review: Doing this diet last year was a very gratifying experience. I lost weight at a very rapid rate, somewhere between 32-36 lbs. in less than 2 1/2 months. My goal was to loose 100 lbs. I stopped doing the diet because of all the bad hype and decided to join Weight Watchers. As soon as I did that, I noticed my desire for carbs and junk was back in full force.

I am now once again on the GREAT DIET and feel my energy level rising again. My daughter-in-law was amazed at how quickly I can walk, now that I am free of all the carbs.

Do yourself a favor, try this diet and you will realize the change is truly a blessing.
