Rating: Summary: Stop Lying, Start Living Review: This book certainly has a bold title, but Steve Chandler makes it work. One reason 17 LIES is likable is because of Chandler's positive attitude that recognizes its positivity. There's no hyperbole here, no trickery, just common sense delivered by an aware and incisive writer. Chandler has no "fear of taking a stand for greatness," as many of us do, and he shreds those weak-minded or uniformed lies we tell ourselves all the time: "There's nothing I can do," "That's just the way I am," and "What does not kill me makes me stronger" are my three favorites. Chandler has a pleasant, open, straightforward style that draws the reader in. He clearly is in the self-improvement line for the right reasons and enjoys helping other people stop deceiving and deluding themselves. He sincerely and passionately wants to help. And help he can. In a world where enthusiasm is suspect (and rightly so, as anyone who channel-surfs past the plethora of infomercials can tell you), Chandler makes an admirable and instructive new effort to restore enthusiasm. Cliché coming: I almost never read self-help books. My soul needs a lot more than chicken soup, but what it does not need is me lying to it. When I received the very short 17 LIES as a gift I had no trouble reading it slowly in less than two-and-a-half hours. Chandler is economical and rich at the same time. I'm sure if he wanted he could find 17 more lies we tell ourselves (a sequel, perhaps?) and make it just as useful. A worthwhile read!
Rating: Summary: A good pick-me-up, removes attitudinal cobwebs Review: I usually read books of much greater intellectual depth than this one, but where it comes up a little shallow in this regard, the book proves very deep on attitude. It reads very quickly and provides a good attitudinal boost. I think the book probably reads especially well for people immersed in sports culture with lots of references to things like NASCAR. While the author does not seek to provide a complete program for living, he provides some very valuable reminders that can provide excellent tools in any endeavor for effective living. No matter what your starting point, I think everyone will feel a little more empowered after reading and understanding his basic messages. I think we all could recognize at least some, if not all, of the seventeen lies, as they reflect very powerful self suppressing memes that permeate our culture, and that we probably have all told ourselves and others at one time or another.
Rating: Summary: A Stallbuster's Guide for Improving Your Personal Life Review: Steve Chandler's message is both simple and powerful: You are in charge of what you think and what you do. He focuses on 17 stalls that occur often in peoples' personal lives, such as helplessness, procrastination, complacency, and so forth. Each has a chapter, and he neatly ties them to a phrase that we have all heard others utter many times (and may well have said ourselves) such as There's Nothing I Can Do. He then proceeds to take the disempowering belief apart quickly and efficiently. In the brief second part of the book, he then gives you some new empowering beliefs to develop. The most important is finding your life's purpose, from the perspective of your soul. If you like Anthony Robbins' work, you will find this quite compatible. You will also find it much more succinct. This book is the only one that I can describe as the perfect companion to our book, The 2,000 Percent Solution. His thinking matches up nicely with the first half of our book on stalls and stallbusting. Anyone who liked our book will like this one, and find it to be a valuable extention of what we address. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK to anyone who is not getting all of the joy out of their lives that they can imagine having!
Rating: Summary: Personable and enlightening Review: This wonderful book presents essays for each of the "17 lies" of the title, with stories drawn from the author's life. Chandler's own experiences illustrate his points throughout the book, never in a dogmatic or pedantic way, but personably. He does not shy away from explaining just how he acquired the material he presents - through personal (and sometimes awakward) learning experiences. The book is lively, readable, even entertaining - and to top it off, it makes you think and encourages you to take control of your life.
Rating: Summary: There must be a spy in our midst Review: Ouch! Every - I mean EVERY chapter of this book contained an example I could identify with. It was as though Steve had been spying on me all my life and decided to write about it. My criteria for whether or not to recommend this book to people is simple: "If you are breathing and your age contains at least two digits, there's a lot in this book for you." Two recommendations: (1) Buy the book and read it. (2) Buy copies as gifts for family, friends, and coworkers. It's a helluvan eye-opener. CHANDLER HAS TOPPED HIMSELF ON THIS ONE! Rating: Summary: Easy Reading and a Great Inspiration Review: I'd give this book 6 stars, if it were possible to do so. Steve's sense of humor in the midst of all his inspiration is very well done. It made me laugh out loud at several points. Somewhere I've heard this book compared to "A Road Less Traveled," but I think "17 Lies..." is even better. Steve shared his soul with us and by the end of the book, I felt like I just met a great new friend. This book was so compelling that I read the last half of it in one evening. I highly recommend this to all my seminar participants and have linked it to my web site.

Rating: Summary: Overcoming self-deception Review: Steve Chandler's third book, 17 Lies That Are Holding You Back & The Truth That Will Set You Free, is an excellent, hard-to-put-down, fast read. Here he calls attention to the myriad of incorrect assumptions that hold us hostage. Actually it's not simply the assumptions themselves; that's really just another deception. As he points out, we do it to ourselves by accepting the lies and arguing for our limitations. By seeing through the lies, we may quit deceiving ourselves and thus move forward through life with enthusiasm and joy. Steve Chandler helps us to achieve profound shifts through his clear, non-fuzzy thinking and writing. If you don't get it after reading this book , no doubt there's a fovorite lie that you use to undermine your ability to set yourself free. --Fred P. Rating: Summary: 17 Lies is Right On ! Review: With stories of how he dimmed his enthusiasm, held on to his resentments, crept through his life in fear of getting hurt & squelched his power for living, Steve Chandler writes fluently & clearly with charming humor & insight about the lies we live by, the "if only I wasn't fat, old, poor etc." He also lets us in on how we can discover our power for living in joy, energy & forgiveness. How to move from stagnating excuses into action. How to be the boss in our own lives. Lovely stuff!
Rating: Summary: 17 Lies That Are Holding You Back Review: 17 Lies That Are Holding You Back surpasses other books written by Steve Chandler in that it cuts away all the "stuff" people hid behind and gets right to the real negative beliefs of life (lies) which hold us back. In it he enumerates the 17 Lies but sums up by saying there is only really just one and that is lying to one's soul. He describes 17 ways we do this and lets us know how to stop. It is must reading for anyone who wants to grow. Dr. James V. Durlacher, international lecturer and author of Freedom From Fear Forever.
