Summary: A lie is the truth if you believe it!
Review: Steve Chandler does an excellent job of pointing out the "as we think, so we become", or a lie is the truth if you believe it.

He deals with rethinking 17 key lies...from "It's who you know", to "I'm helpless", and 15 more in-between.

Format of double spacing lines make the book as easy to read on one of the "One Minute Manager" books by Ken Blanchard. Also, the stories make the principles come alive, and make reading enjoyable.

Has the potential of being a "life-changing" book.

Summary: Essential reading!
Review: This book is clear, direct and a great "wake-up" to the lies we tell ourselves every day that keep us from truly realising our potential. It reveals the excuses we make, and the veils we hide behind, and I loved the "straight talking" approach.

It is a timely reminder that we are our own jailers, and that we have within us the power to set ourselves free.

The audio version is an essential addition to one's auto library, and Steve's voice is easy to listen to, and demands one to listen (to him, and more importantly, to oneself).

Highly recommend this if you are needing a prompt to action!

Review: Whenever people are about to start a self-improvement habit or change, a little voice in the back of their mind tells them one of the 17 common lies that Steve Chandler writes in this book. In this book, he tells why each of these common excuses is really a lie, and why you cannot use the excuses to prevent yourself from taking positive life-improving actions. So, if you really want to change and really want to destroy any excuse for not changing, this is the book to read!

In this easy to read treatise', Mr. Chandler challenges our everyday thinking processes to show us how we create our own "Lies" to justify our life situations. It will redefine the way you think about life and yourself. If you read no onther book this year, read this one.

Summary: A Five Star Classic By A World Class Motivator !
Review: I listened to the audio tape version of this latest work by Steve Chandler and found it to contain so much important information that I listened to the 3 hour tape twice. Mr. Chandler personally reads his book to you in a very calm, informed, understanding manner. Very easy to listen to. The lies each of us tell ourselves on a daily basis prevent us from getting the most from our lives. Steve really knows these lies, because he lived most of them and was able to overcome them. He helps us understand what we must do to overcome the common lies and misconceptions and to be happier and successful. There's nothing difficult in what he recommends. It's all stuff we know, but never really zero in on these lies and therefore fail to attain our goals. He shows us how we can overcome the lies to raise our self-esteem, how we avoid taking action, and how we allow people to take advantage of us and make us mad. The many examples he provides hit home, at least for me. Mr. Chandler doesn't preach to you, but simply states the facts and gives examples of everyday situations that keep us from achieving our potential. The information presented is simple enough for everyone to understand. The moment he gives an example, you can instantly relate to similar things that happened in your own life. Everyone can benefit from this work, from teenagers to old timers. Well worth the time. Try it.

Summary: Practical inspiration--not an oxymoron
Review: If you're looking for a book to motivate and inspire you to create your own life...and the practical attitudes to accomplish your goals, this is the book for you. Chandler does not tell the reader what to do--he tells the reader what's been stopping them from doing it. And he provides fresh insights into doing the "right" thing to, as the author puts it, "set you free." Highly recommended.

Summary: An Excellent Book One Will Enjoy And Keep To Read Again!
Review: An Excellent Book One Will Enjoy And Keep To Read Again. The author, Steve Chandler has written a very insightful book that can touch your soul, spirit and mind. Most people like myself read as many of these books I could in the 1970's and I felt I was well educated on the subject. Consequently, I was a bit unmotivated to listen to it. I was wrong to think that and I am glad I listened. The audio book starts off from intriguing beginnings and mounts to climaxes of new heights from start to finish. He confesses his own failures without trepidation just to encourage the reader to understand that they can do what he has done. At the same time he provides some superb solutions to your inaction, over reactions and simple procrastinations. It is worth the price you pay, will always be a valuable guide during your entire life. Additionally, the book is a great gift to anyone you love and may need some help to become all they want to be in life. The author will inspire you to overcome any obstacle, challenge any problem and succeed in any endeavor. The book is especially helpful in the audio version. This superb author, stimulator and creator of inspirational speeches who foster others to add value to themselves and in turn the world, through the powerful gifts we all have from within! I recommend you place it in your car and listen anytime you have a set back in anything or want to start something new, you won't regret it!

Summary: Powerful read on overcoming negative conditioning
Review: I started reading this book on a Friday evening, and did not put it down until I had read every page. It was a late, great evening of discovery.

"17 Lies That Are Holding You Back & the Truth That Will Set You Free" exposes the barriers we erect preventing us from achieving our goals. While meant as a defense mechanism, this internal sabotage is directly in the way of our true happiness.

While I found when I would read a new chapter heading, I would often say, "This lie will not pertain to me," I found something in my life where I told this lie to myself. Without fail, every chapter had relevance to my life.

It's a riveting, relatively quick read, with plain talk and highly readable messages. Not the academic psycho-babble that is difficult to digest.

This book will probably open up some deep-seated wounds, but it will also bring forth the healing process through the new understanding you will have about yourself. I will read it again this year and see how I am doing in my personal quest for honesty with myself.

Summary: Wonderful clarity, intellectually pleasing
Review: I received 17 Lies as a gift from a friend. I found it a quick and easy read, and was surprised at the amount of substance that was contained in the chapters. I've studied Albert Ellis and Rational Emotive Therapy before cognitive therapy was fashionable and found Chandler's book to be somewhat similar in tone. 17 Lies helps to clarify the idea that we truly are own own worst enemy, no matter what is going on in the external world. Our limitations and unhappiness seem to stem from the usually negative interpretation of events; it is this that proves to be the most damaging and limiting factors in our life. I like the way Steve talks about his own life. He is a human and doesn't hold himself up as a guru or wise man, just a man who has experienced this in his own life. He brings into focus so many of the self-defeating patterns we enforce, simply by being intellectually lazy and comfortably entrenched in our little habits. I recommend this book to any one who gets nauseous at *chicken soup*, but who wants insight into the strength we possess if we have the courage to see it.
