Summary: A Strange Blessing
Review: "...a life-threatening disease like cancer is a strange blessing that casts our life and purpose in sharp relief," writes Jordan. "Some cancer patients allow cancer to dominate and define their lives. They cut themselves off from their families and friends, throw in the towel emotionally, expect the worst, and fulfill that expectation. But there are many, many more who use their illness to find new meaning in their lives. And these are the patients who beat cancer against all odds or greatly exceed their prognosis or medical expectation." From his own experience, and from research that he has studied, Jordan has developed the strong belief that responses to the words "You have cancer" -- emotional, intellectual, and physical -- have a lot to do with survival and with quality of life. This is not to suggest that the immediate reaction will be "positive thinking." After surviving three different kinds of cancer, he challenges himself to never forget his own "raw fear," because he wants to hold onto the sense of purpose that cancer brought to him, "the ironic blessing." "I know many strong and intelligent people," he observes, "who are so devastated by their diagnosis of cancer that they are paralyzed with fear, fail to take charge of their lives and medical options, and do not take advantage of their greatest resources:

- The ability to be an active partner in the medical decisions that will determine whether they will live or die, and

- The will to live, which now has been demonstrated scientifically to have an impact on the course of disease generally and cancer specifically."

Summary: A Hopeful, Encouraging, Page-Turner
Review: A friend recommended Hamilton Jordan's NO SUCH THING AS A BAD DAY and I approached this author's non-fiction account of his life defeating cancer with skepticism. I am excited to report a TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE-esque enlightenment upon reading Mr. Jordan's book. His character, afforded unique opportunities in his famed life, was challenged against all odds; Jordan's spirit triumphs through his novel (and through his life)--giving hope to all who empathize.

Summary: A Memoir that grabs you and holds you to last page!
Review: A good friend sent me this book even though she calls me a "right-wing Republican" and not a Carter fan even though I happen to live in Georgia and ironically have the same last name at the author. This book is bigger than all that. It is the human story of one man's life, rich stories about Vietnam, Washington and the civil rights movement and powerful, emotional and important stories about Mr. Jordon's three different bouts with cancer. But not just a cancer book but a book for anyone who likes a good read that grabs you and holds you and holds you to the very last page!

Review: A wonderful book. One of those that you hate it when it is over. History, inspiration, funny at times and pognant at others....best book this year!

Great for people with cancer and their loved ones but good for the rest of us too!

Summary: Disappointing
Review: Based on the other reviews, and my own respect for Ham Jordan, I had been expecting a lot from this book. I was, frankly, disappointed. Mr. Jordan has written a mish-mash of a book. His stories of his tenure in Vietnam, his time in the White House, and (most bizarrely) a distant relative's participation in the civil rights struggle have very little to do with his struggle against cancer (at least he doesn't relate them to each other well). His account of his own battles, while full of advice about how to get the best cancer care, really do not go into much detail about his despair or how it changed his life (other than when he basically says that he appreciates each day more). I had expected a more coherent package. If you want to know a little more about Ham Jordan, this isn't a bad book, but it's neither really about cancer nor about his political or personal career (the book does not even mention his current occupation).

Summary: You Won't Be Able to Put This Book Down
Review: Being a southerner myself, and also having almost every single male member of my family die of cancer, this book really hit home for me. It is inspirational and full of hope. I think Mr. Jordan's legacy will not be his time in politics, but more importantly it will be his own life story and the war he and his family have waged against cancer. The book is uplifting and entertaining. The political history itself makes the book a fascinating read, but the real story is Mr. Jordan's successful battles with cancer. I am so glad that I had an opportunity to read this book, and I truly believe that it will inspire anyone who picks it up. I guarantee you won't be able to put it down- I couldn't!

Summary: A veritable shot in the arm!
Review: Hamilton Jordan tells of his inspiring victory over the deadly disease that affects us all in one way or another - cancer. He also tells the intriguing and compelling history of his brief tenure in the White House under Jimmy Carter as well as the inspiring story of his uncle, who fought racism in rural Georgia ahead of his time.

But above all, this book provided me with a shot in the arm while I was in the hospital for over a month with pneumonia. Feeling somewhat down, this book really lifted my spirits.
Jordan proves that a positive outlook and one deeply rooted in prayer and faith in God immensely helps those in dire medical circumstances. I am a walking monument and a true believer of the power of prayer and faith in God.

I highly recommend this book to everyone - whether you're sick or not. It is ineffably a book that leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling after you put it down. A great gift to someone you love - including yourself.
