Rating: Summary: disappointing Review: Not a book I cared for. In a book I usually become really involved with the characters. Not in this one, I really didn't care about any of them, including the heroine. I thought the sex was so-so, and was more about how many different couples the author could get together in the shortest amount of time. There was so much "witty dialogue" and comebacks that didn't always go with the story, or that had be going "hunh?" I definitely wish I'd gotten it from the library. I was very interested in her other books, but will not buy them. I'll try one more, and then, if it is as bad as this was, forget this author.
Rating: Summary: Yield to Temptation Review: Jennifer Crusie has a talent for writing about slightly bent women with certain sexual frustration in small town settings. This novel opens with sisters Sophie and Amy Dempsey arriving in the town of Temptation to make a film together. The first thing they notice is the Temptation water tower, painted pink, and looking distinctly phallic. How foreboding! The novel involves romance (Sophie falls for Phineas, the town's mayor and Amy falls for the hard scrabbled lawman), murder, the suspicion that the film being made is pornographic. It is laugh-out-loud funny! I have just finished reading Crusie's most recent novel, "Faking It." It wasn't supposed to be published until late August, but Amazon got it to me last week. While Temptation is a joy of a novel, "Faking It" is even better. You can't go wrong cruising with Crusie.
Rating: Summary: Not to my taste Review: First the positive: There were some funny scenes in this book. The autopsy scene was funny as was it funny to read about the police trying to find out the truth about the dead man. The water tower was funny. I also liked the whole idea of the book. Sophie and her sister are wedding photographers, daughters of a con man. Sophie is the 'mother' in the relationship having raised her sister and her brother. They go to Temptation to help a friend and make a video that shows their friend can still make movies. What begins as a short video ends up as porn, maybe, but maybe not. In the mean time temptation is passing laws that says no porn may be filmed in Temptation while Sophie and the mayor are getting to know each other. Second the negative: The book wasn't that funny to make up for the lack of morals and sad state affairs in this book. There were no morals at all in any of the characters, there was not strength in any of the characters in this book. Sophie was in the position she was because she could not say no to her siblings. The mayor had a daughter that he had from a girlfriend who he married because she got pregnant because she thought he was rich. And so on. This book was way too slutty for my tastes. The whole book revolved around who was getting sex, how they were getting it, and who with. Husbands and wives were having affairs, the only reason for being so low is that the person they were sleeping with was famous. Mothers were trying to pay off girlfriends to leave town. And on and on. Over all I just found the whole book depressing with a few chuckles thrown in as it's saving grace. I thought the idea of the story was great, but I believe it could have been better written.
Rating: Summary: Harper Valley PTA Meets Thelma & Louise Review: Jennifer Crusie has a way with words, scenes, characters, & connecting with her audience. "Welcome To Temptation" starts as Sophie and Amy Dempsey drive into Temptation. Think of Mayberry but with residents on an acid trip; Ordinary things have a surreal affect. Phin Tucker is depicted as the reasonable third-generation mayor. He befriends Sophie and Amy as they film their "documentary" on the local star that has returned to her roots, Clea. He knows something is up but can't quite put his finger on it. As a result, he keeps a close eye on Sophie. While Wes, the town's law enforcement takes on the responsibility Amy. We are given a cast of misfits and are taken into their world. What seems like everyday tasks for the rest of us is adventurous for these people. Nothing is ever how it appears in a Jennifer Crusie story and this is no exception. Entertaining books don't always make you laugh out loud but this one made me, many times. I recommend this book to anyone who does not mind descriptive sex scenes. It also helps if you have a cinematic imagination because this book will read like a movie or sitcom. It had just the right mix of romance, humor, and mystery to keep me glued to the pages.
Rating: Summary: Worth the effort! Review: The book was really difficult to get into. Not interesting enough to make you want to read it.
Rating: Summary: not that great Review: I was pretty disappointed in this book. Crusie's humor is so-so, and the characters are unappealing, a little too sluttish and making stupid decisions. I love romantic comedy, but this was definitely not a favorite for me.
Rating: Summary: Great Sex!! Review: Ms Crusie can certainly write a hot sex scene. Her wit and humor shine through just as strong. The characters are powerful without being overbearing. I strongly recommend this book. I've recently read one of her earlier works - "Tell Me Lies" - and I was not as satisfied.
Rating: Summary: I laughed out loud! Review: Jennifer Crusie is a worthy rival to "Bridget Jones's" Helen Fielding and "When Harry Met Sally's" Nora Ephron. If you like romantic comedy, you'll love any of Jennifer Crusie's books.
Rating: Summary: A Lavyrle Spencer fan expands her horizons Review: I am an avid Lyvryle Spencer fan. I started reading her books a few years ago, and although she is now retired, I am catching up on her materials. I love her novels, especially her contemporary books. But when I was away from my library (and my boyfriend) for a week or so, I had to find a book to read. Unfortunetly the bookstore had no Lavryle Spencer novels, so I was forced to spend 45 minutes looking for a book that was just as good as one as Spencers. I read cover after cover and finally came across Welcome to Temptation. Being sparked by the cover I thought, what the hell....I took it to my hotel and started reading it. HOLY COW this was a good book. It kept my interest and provided a great storyline and character developments. I thought that once I was addicted to Spencer that I wouldn't be able to find another romance novel without finding smut (erotica like Beatrice Smalls...whom I happen to like on occasion, but really not my cup of tea). But miss cruise proved me dead worng. I haven't read the other books she wrote..but I will go out right away and find another one of her novels to see what I missed out on.... What REALLY suprised me is that I HATE mystery novels. I can't tolerate them, don't ask me why I just can't, but this storyline made almost secondary- I loved it. I may not be against mysteries as hard as I was originally! GREAT BOOK- Read it if you're away from friends and significant others...you won't be lonely anymore..you'll be too busy trying to finish the novel than wondering what they are doing at home...
Rating: Summary: Welcome to Temptation.......yes please Review: I am currently reading this book for the second time and am enjoying it just as much (maybe more). Granted there are a few cheesy lines, but it feels like Crusie has deliberately put these in to have a little fun. I have read several of Crusie's books and they are all great. You know that when you finish one of her books you will be totally satisfied and go and search for another book by her straight away. I love the title, read the book and you will understand why it is perfect. This is my kind of book, not easy ready, fun reading.
