Rating: Summary: Good Beach Book Review: I've read "Tell Me Lies" and "Crazy For You" by Jennifer Cruisie and thoroughly enjoyed them so I immediately picked up "Welcome to Temptation" for a quick summer read and I wasn't disappointed! It's about two sisters who go to Temptation, Ohio to shoot a movie about a film star. However, as Sophie Dempsey put it, they entered "Bat country" when they settled into Temptation. Being from the wrong side of the tracks, Sophie and her sister create a lot of gossip and rumours among the townfolk of Temptation, which leads them directly into the paths of Phin Tucker, mayor, and Wes, police chief and a whole lot of fun! Another great story with interesting characters from Cruisie. I can't wait for the next one!
Rating: Summary: Be Still My Beating Heart! Review: A water tower that resembles a sex organ, former con artists shooting a documentary that turns into a soft porn movie, hot sex, and murder--what more could you cram into a novel? Try a terrific, sexy hero, a strong heroine, a wonderful secondary cast of characters that we've all met at some point in our lives, and a quaint little town. Welcome to Temptation by Jennifer Crusie packs it all into its 341 pages. Not only is this a sharp looking book, it lives up to its appearance. Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. This is a delightful romp that captivates you from beginning until the end. If you're looking for pure entertainment--read this book. One word of caution for those who want a rating system on books, it's steamy not only for the sex but the language. Frankly, Temptation wouldn't have been Temptation without both.
Rating: Summary: Take A Trip To Temptation!! Review: Sophie Dempsey and her sister, Amy, who together tape weddings for a living come to small town Temptation, Ohio. Their assignment is taping a simple video documentary which turns into something a little more erotic. When Sophie meets sexy mayor, Phineas Tucker, he shakes her hand and utters two of my most favorite lines from this book, "Hello Sophie Dempsey. Welcome to Temptation." Well, then the games really begin. This book is a non-stop, roller coaster riot once you throw in Sophie's con artist roots, a phallic-shaped water tower, murder, adultery, blackmail, a very abused corpse, a porn king and some really great, if not a little kinky, sex. I laughed throughout this entire book and never wanted it to end. This was my first Jennifer Crusie read, but it certainly won't be my last. There's a good reason she has several novels on the Romance Writers of America's yearly top ten list. One word of caution though, the language is definitely rated "R". While there's one particular four letter word used a lot more often than I usually like to read, it certainly doesn't change my opinion on how excellent this book is!
Rating: Summary: A lively romp Review: The Dempseys came from a long line of felons. However, Sophie Dempsey was trying to change that. To date, she was the only Dempsey not to have some sort of police record. She meant to stay on the right side of the law too! Normally Sophie and her sister, Amy, video taped weddings for a living. When ex-actress Clea Whipple asked them to help her video tape her next film they agreed. It was to be about Clea returning to her home town, Temptation, and meeting her high school sweetheart. Things went down hill from day one. Phineas Tucker was mayor of Temptation. Wes Mazur was the police chief. From the moment the Dempsey sisters arrived their lives had been in ruins. One event leads to another until the gossip mill in the small town cause adultery, blackmail, and then murder! Everyone in town was a suspect and someone was trying to kill Sophie! **** A story full of funny scenes that will have readers laughing out loud. Be warned, there are a lot of sex scenes though. In fact, that is most of the first half of the book. But once the body gets into the picture, the book is too good to put down! Very enjoyable! ****
Rating: Summary: Jennifer Crusie is a lot of laughs.... Review: and this is my favorite of all her books. Some of the characters appear here as a prequel to her newest book, "Faking It",but this book is much more satisfying! Temptation, Ohio is the destination of the Dempsey sisters - wedding video artists trying to make an independent film documentary. It's their destination because they are meeting past starlet Clea, former wife of their brother, at her farm in Temptation. Sophie Dempsey, more closely tied to earth than sister Amy, wants to insure that the documentary does not resemble an X-rated picture, but she's losing the battle. She's thrown together with the town's favorite son and mayor, Phin Tucker, and his irrepresible daughter Dillie (and his arrogant mother!). Phin and his friend the sheriff keep close watch on the Dempseys while trying to solve the unlikely murder of Clea's husband Zane. Crusie's trademark romps in the bedroom (on the dock, in and on cars, etc.) bind Phin and Sophie together, and her sarcastic wit and loony dialogue add to the fun. A great read!
Rating: Summary: GREAT AND FUNNY READ Review: I just loved this adventurous and devious romance! Jennifer Crusie nailed it on the head with this one! I just loved the way that Phineas and Sophie had an eye on each other and made each other crazy. If you liked the Dempsey's, you can follow up with FAKING IT, another Crusie novel that tells about Davey Dempsey and even involves Sophie and the gang again!
Rating: Summary: I read this book on the beach in Hawaii Review: Great summer beach read. One of my favorite authors in this genre is Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I look forward to reading more Jennifer Crusie books!
Rating: Summary: A Small Town Meets Its Match... Review: I am constantly amazed by Jennifer Crusie's writing talent. Although I have long known that she produces some of the greatest dialogue around - such as in "Bet Me," I wasn't yet aware of her range in characterization and plots. "Welcome to Temptation" reveals this talent thoroughly. Sophie Dempsey is the eldest daughter in a family of "gypsies." As a child, her family made frequent moves and engaged in constant con jobs. Sophie is the one member of the Dempsey family that does not have a police record. As the eldest, she has spent a lifetime of sacrificing her needs to look after her siblings - Amy and Dave. They are a close family who believe that "family comes first." When Amy gets her involved in filming a porn movie in Temptation, Sophie is divided. She has met the sexy new mayor, Phineas Tucker, but for the first time is torn between loyalties. When she meets his beguiling daughter, Dillie, Sophie doesn't stand a chance. Like all small towns, Temptation is not one to easily embrace new comers. It is a town where gossip travels like the wind and tradition is to be carried on at all costs. However, Temptation has never met a woman like Sophie, a dichotomy of innocence and predator. I loved Sophie's "Five-Step Program:" 1. Make the Mark smile. 2. Get the Mark to agree with you. 3. Make the Mark feel superior. 4. Give the Mark something. 5. Get what you want and get out. The characterizations in this book were magnificent. Rachel, Rob, Frank, Virginia, Liz, Leo, Wes, Amy, and Davy - they were just so well defined. I loved the ending to this book with Sophie's thoughts on the political posters. It was just hilarious and hopeful and you truly got the sense that this could work....
Rating: Summary: Contemporary romance novel Review: This book has great characters, which is the strength of the book. The couple at the center of the book seem very mismatched at first. She's the off-beat film maker who comes to town with shady purposes. He's from an old family and very well-off. It's great to see the "golden boy" fall for a woman who isn't part of the Country Club crowd. The love scenes are very passionate and exciting. I really enjoyed the book, but it's not the old Harlequin formula, if that's what you want. Crusie is a great writer. This is my favorite of her books.
Rating: Summary: Not your typical chick-lit Review: As someone who has read (maybe too much) chick-lit, I can say that usually the plots and characters are much the same. What I like about this book is how well written and funny it is compared to it's compatriots. Jennifer Crusie takes a tired old plot-- the bad boy and the insecure girl-- and gives it new life in this book about small towns and colorful characters. Something about her writing just makes this book stand out. (...)
