Rating: Summary: A Classic! Review: "The Saturdays" has been among my favorite juveniles since I discovered it in the library 40 years ago. I'm now in my 50's and can't count how many times I've gone back and reread it. What a treat to see that, at last, some astute editor has had the savvy to bring it back into print so modern audiences can enjoy it--and in a durable hardcover at that. This is a perfect read-aloud for families, in part perhaps because of the age-spread of the four children: preschoolers will envy six-year-old Oliver his lone excursion to the circus, young teens will identify with 13-year-old Mona's stirrings of adolescent rebellion as exemplified by her decision to have her "long butter-colored braids" cut off, and middlers will like 10-year-old Randy's creation of the Independent Saturday Afternoon Adventure Club and the unique situations that befall her (like befriending the formidable and exotic Mrs. Oliphant or tumbling out of a rowboat on Central Park Lake). Each child is a real human being and an individual character whom Enright draws to perfection. And the setting (New York in, probably, early 1940 or '41) will intrigue the younger generations and bring a glow of nostalgia to the older ones. This book should be in every household library in the land!

Rating: Summary: One of my happiest childhood memories, reprinted at last Review: As a kid, I loved this and the other Melendy family books as much as anything in my school library. The cosmopolitan New York setting---combined with the unconventional composition of this artistically-inclined, close-knit family---was a true antidote to my jangling, tacky, discordant 1970's real world. What pure escapism! I have been heartbroken at being unable to find these stories for my own daughter, and I'm thrilled they are finally available again.
Rating: Summary: A Children's book, set in the 40's Review: Four siblings combine their allowances so that on each
Saturday, one of the children can have an adventure of their
own. One child chooses and art museum, another a play, another
a trip to a hair salon and the other..... you will just have
to read to find out. Wonderful stories that let each child
shine through.
Rating: Summary: THE TOGETHERNESS KIDS Review: How to spend your delicious Saturday afternoons when you only have a 50-cent allowance in New York City? Well, the four Melendy kids decide to pool their resources and create ISAAC (a private Saturday Afternoon Club), so that each one in turn (well, not Oliver cuz he's only six) can enjoy one afternoon a month doing something Really Special. Sounds great, but there are unexpected complications--and rewards--as each one chooses an outing tailormade for his/her personal taste. Some of the chapters include stories within the main story, related by other people--even about their own parents! Serious things happen (gas poisoning, a fire, getting lost), but these are counterbalanced by a new puppy, shocking nailpolish--even a mounted policeman who contribute to the siblings' fun. You'll never guess where they go to discover the Moon Room! If I had been a kid back then, my favorite game would have been Drugstore...A snappy and lighthearted read about family frolics and caring cooperation in a kinder New York. There are sequels too, by the author of Thimble Summer. Elementary appeal.
Rating: Summary: The Saturdays is a wonderful story of family and growing up. Review: I first found this book at a resale shop when I was eleven or so. I bought it for 10 cents. It was one of the best investments of my life. It quickly became (and still is) my favorite children's novel. I enjoyed the stories of the ISAAC club. I really found so many afternoons of enjoyment reading about Miranda's petit fours, Oliver's adventure at the circus, the near death of Mona and of course finding out that "the elephant" was such a great lady. I re-read it as an adult and enjoyed it thouroughly. I reccommend this book to anyone looking for a happy, carefree story of family and adventure.

Rating: Summary: I love this story and the whole series. Review: I read this series as a young girl whose family had been splintered by WWII it was a happy group that I found in the pages and they triumphed over trials and did not wallow in their misfortunes. I did not realize how well received the stories were. I write a column for a small town newspaper about all kinds of good things in life, good food, books, gardening, day trips etc etc and I wanted to recommend these books and lo and behold they are still treasured and read. I am so pleased. Excellent books are timeless.
