Rating: Summary: Decent Review: Not one of Mr.Coonts best, but not his worst either. Perhaps since it was his first plunge into the scifi scheme of things,it was abit different. I wasnt un-impressed by the characters, but they werent all that impressive either. I would have liked the novel better had more communication between Rip and Charley.Over all a good book though!
Rating: Summary: Saucer not the best Review: This is the first Stephen Coonts book I have read. I thought the science behind the saucer was a bit simplistic. The way the ship was powered left a lot to be desired(water & nuclear?).The characters were also drawn very basic. The people were black and white and no shades of gray. It is a very quick read and you should be through it before you start gagging.
Rating: Summary: Childish writing and character development Review: Picked up Saucer from our local library thinking that I hadn't read a good sci-fi story in quite a while. What a disappointment. I quite after about 50 pages. The story was too "cute" and the characters were, as someone else posted, "cartoonish". Based on what I read so far, and the rest of the plot detail about flying the saucer, I didn't have any hope of improvement, so I decided to try something else.
Rating: Summary: Good News, Bad news Review: Yes, the plot is simplistic, and yes, the characters are cartoonish. The male hero is characterized as young, smart, and a big eater. The female hero is good looking, a pilot, and can kill. The antagonist is wealthy, nasty, and greedy. Give me a break! I expect much more of modern fiction. As a high-school student (way too long ago), I read and quite enjoyed Andre Norton's The Time Traders and Galactic Derelict and expected Saucer to build upon those novels and their subsequent updates. Silly me!The good news is that Saucer is an enjoyable read and quite a quick read. If you enjoy old space operas, you will most likely enjoy Saucer. Regarding my three-star rating of Saucer. [...]This is a good book within its genre, not great, not a why-did-this-ever-get published book.
Rating: Summary: It could have been soooo much more! Review: I am an avid Coonts fan, but was disappointed with this book. The story had such promise, but didn't live up to its potential.
Rating: Summary: This is a juvenile! Review: Coonts must have dug into the trunk for this book. Grab a bag of peanuts, a cold brew, and sink into your easy chair and wish you were 14 years old again. Heinlein wrote juveniles and no one knocked him when he did -- but they were marketed as juvies. This book isn't. When I picked it up, I thought it would be a favorite author's foray into a different genre. It was! And Heinlein would be proud! This is a raygun and rocketship juvenile and it is delightful if you don't read it with adult sensitivities. Of course it doesn't always make sense! Of course it's not always coherent! And the science... ah... Hey, it's one heck of an entertaining read if you know and appreciate the genre. Buy and enjoy! And if you have a fourteen year old nephew, sneak it to him. He'll be hooked on SF for the rest of his life.
Rating: Summary: Great fun Review: Once you get over Coontz's angling towards Hollywood with his cartoonish treatment of the characters, you begin to enjoy it and enjoy it a great deal. The finding of a buried alien artifact is one of the oldest themes in science fiction and still good.
Rating: Summary: Simplistic Plot Review: I was most disappointed in this book. The plot was easily discernable from the beginning. And to top it off, his characterizations and descriptions were very poorly drawn. I ended up not caring about what happened to any of them. I find books on UFO's fascinating so it certainly wasn't the premise that turned me off.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I read, enjoyed, and own every book that Stephen Coontz has written. Until I read this one! This is Not his style of writing, in fact the plot and style are almost juvenile.. The story is there, the development is weak and almost childish.
Rating: Summary: Another Fast Read for the Beach. Review: A typical but readbale Sci Fi story that at times is a joy to read but then seems so unrealistic. A group of seismologoists in the Sahara discover a saucer in rock that is dated to just over 100,000 years old (first mistake), and so it goes. If you can avoid the scientific oopps in the story and don't worry about the simple character development, well then you should be able to consume this over a couple of hours.
