Rating: Summary: Read "Catcher" over "One Day." Review: In "One Day in The Life," Solzhenitsyn uses a fascinating style of making the unordinary seem ordinary. This particular day in the life of Shukhov is no different than any for the past eight years, and the novel does a wonderful job of expressing these horrors in a banal fashion. In no way is this a naturalistic, or realistic novel, that seeks to show the gore and violence of living in a prison camp. There are practically no scenes that will make you cringe from the description alone; everything is a very slow and almost laid-back progression. I would actually classify it as closer to modernist in that one of it's underlying themes seems to be there is little or no purpose in life. Nothing has meaning. It's very possible that I am wrong here, for there are moments in the novel of hope and new life given to Shukhov. But are these moments all pointless? Even if he does serve his ten years, won't they just slap another ten on, or maybe even twenty-five? I read this for my senior year AP English class, and it really doesn't compare to many of the other fantastic plays and novels we have read. This is a very important work in that it opened many people's eyes to the Russian secret of the prison camps, but besides that, I see the novel as a narrative of good quality, but not extraordinary. If you want to read a narrative of extraordinary quality, try "The Catcher in The Rye." Fantastic!
Rating: Summary: It was Pimp!! Review: Liked the deatail and the authenticity.
Rating: Summary: This is a great book that everyone should read. Review: This book "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich." is the type of book that once you have begun to read you just cannot put it down until you have finished it. If anyone is interested in the happenings, actions and treatment of people in the old concentration camps this is a must read book. It is an informative book based on one person's accounts of his life in a concentration camp. I had to read this book for my senior year english class figuring that it would be a boring waste-of-time book, but as it turned out it was a very interesting and informative book that everyone should read.
Rating: Summary: Ivan Denisovich is a great book! Review: One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a captivating story about life in a Siberian prison camp. It is related from the point of view of one prisoner, Ivan Denisovich (Shukhov), and takes place in the span of one day, from reveille to lights out. The book seems to have no real or apparent plot, but portrays each event of the day to show what everyday life was like for those inside. It reveals what one had to do just to survive from day to day, and the pain of not knowing how long this would go on. Though the lack of plot would usually be dull and ineffective, the author tells each sequential event in a manner that arouses interest and leads one to wonder what is next for this poor man. So many things happen in just one day, one would be considered to have an adventurous existenc if it all took place within a lifetime. It is not too long, and is very simple to read; however, the often use of profanity may offend some. Never the less, i wold highly recommend this book for a realistic look inside what life was like for the many that went through that, and what they had to look forward to every day.
Rating: Summary: This book is the most truthful book I have read. Review: Ivan Denisovich was a book that told a story about a guy that is in prison for treason. The story is based on one day in prison. It shows all strenghts and weaknesses that come along with being in prison. Even a hard-core prison like this one. Usually books like this don't have a very good ending, but this did. Ivan learned from the others, but knew he couldn't think about getting out or he would go crazy. This book is well written and I would suggest it to anyone who wants to learn about the real situation in prison.
Rating: Summary: Russian Prison Camp Review: This was one of the best books I have ever read. It provides a real and true account of life in the Russian prison camps. The prison camp is shown in the eyes of a very smart man that has to be deceptive and honest at the same time just to stay alive. The mystery of not knowing what is going to happen next and where the next meal is going to come from keeps you on the edge. It gives you a complete view of a day in the life of a Russian prison camp.
Rating: Summary: A book filled with interesting information Review: In this book, it gave me a new point of view. I now know what it would be like to be in prison for most of my life. This book tells you about the life of a man put into prison for treason and he will most likely not be ocming home. He has cut off contact with his wife, except once or twice a year. This book explains his struggles, hardships, and emotional stress that he goes through. A good book if you are interested in knowing what it would be like to be in a prison camp.
Rating: Summary: A must for classic fans Review: One of the best books I've ever read. A must for anyone intrested in the subject of stalinism. Rating: Summary: Fiction, but characteristically true Review: This fine novel about a day in the life of a prisoner in the soviet penal system is short enough to be read in one or two sittings and vivid enough to paint a realistic picture of many a soviet gulag's hapless inhabitants.
Rating: Summary: Ivan is everyone under the boot of tyranny Review: "One Day" appeared early on in Khrushchev's "De-Stalinization" program, but it has outlasted him and the whole USSR. The book is timeless and in the post Cold War world bears reading again. The USSR may be dead, but totalitarianism is still alive, just waiting for the right moment to return in horrible force. I can never eat vegetable soup without thinking of Ivan's day.
