Rating: Summary: A fun textbook Review: This book is phenominal. The text slowly brings you up to speed with the variances in arabic scripts and enunciation. Coupled with real news clippings and product labels it will have anyone able to understand the arabic language and how it's constructed. The one drawback is I can't seem to find the accompaning tape. But, if you follow it and learn the transliteration in the early chapters, you don't really need it. I've seen several publications and getting started with Arabic books & tapes. This is the only one worth the money and more importantly, your time to sit down with it.

Rating: Summary: Mastering Arabic Review: This is a good introduction to Arabic. Regretfully, the book is useless without the audiotapes. The tapes are inexpensive, and available online through Hippocrene Books' website. Without alot of drills and exercises in each chapter, it is necessary to repeat the same audio exercises over and over again to absorb pronunciation, and, as a result, very little vocabulary is learned. This is still a good foundation course for further study.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Book Review: This is a wonderful book for anyone who wishes to learn Arabic on their own. Examples are clear and simple, there are numerous exercises which help practice the gradually introduced grammar and vocabulary. Many points are covered without the reader experiencing a burdening overload of information. This book has been wonderful every step of the way, a great tool for teaching one's self the Arabic language.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Work Review: This is an excellent book with large easy-to-read Arabic type fonts; a good selection of basic, useful, everyday words and phrases, nothing unduly academic or pedantic. The presentation of the material helped me understand the basics much more quickly and easily than other books I have. The tapes (2 of them) are available separately from the publisher for a modest $13 and do help as they provide examples of pronunciation. I also highly recommend the other books by this author.
Rating: Summary: A fun textbook Review: This is an outstanding textbook. It is well structured, clear and enjoyable. It uses a very active approach to learing the language and doesn't bog you down in grammar. This will have you reading arabic in no time! I keep refering back to it even in my university arabic course. The book/tape pack is excellent - you really need the pronunciation help with arabic.
Rating: Summary: A modern and accessible book Review: This is my attempt to transfer and adapt the best of EFL and modern language teaching methodology to Arabic. If you have been put off by dense, over-grammatical courses, try this!
Rating: Summary: Interesting and practical subjects covered Review: This is probably the only Arabic instruction book I've bought that actually attempts to teach you the language as opposed to describing the language. It does have too much grammar at times and it certainly is too short, but it's by far the most accessible introductory work I've seen. Most words are fully vocalized (pausal form usually) but the author stops transliterating after the first few lessons. I would prefer transliteration throughout. Also towards the end of the book you get bombarded with terse and complex treatment of derived verb forms. More drills should be included to help learners absorb the basic vocabulary, verb and noun forms. I wish all the grammar could be dropped so that the user learns just by imitating the author. Good value overall.
