Summary: 449 pages, mostly talk and very little action.
Review: "The Last Precinct," by Patricia Cornwell, picks up right where "Black Notice" left off. Our heroine, Kay Scarpetta, was almost killed by Jean-Baptiste Chandonne, the "werewolf"/serial killer. In the aftermath of this frightening and traumatic event, Scarpetta is depressed and angry that the police are turning her home upside down while they investigate what happened. Kay is desperately trying to come to terms with her messed-up life; she is still in mourning for her lover, Benton. Kay turns for solace to her niece, Lucy, and her friend, Anna, but there are no easy answers. Kay is considering leaving her job, but she is uncertain what she should do with the rest of her life. Unfortunately, this is pretty much the plot of most of the book. Scarpetta wallows in misery while her friends attempt to comfort her. The only other plot is the tying in of three strange murders with a tacked on explanation of what really happened to Benton back in Philadelphia. None of this is remotely entertaining or believable. I have been a fan of the Scarpetta books for years. They have been uneven in quality for some time now, but this virtually plotless novel is an indication that the Kay Scarpetta books have run their course.

Summary: STOP PLEASE!
Review: This book was a real burden to read. I have really enjoyed all of the other Scarpetta books even the Hornet's Nest etc, series. This was just, I don't know, boring. The plot, never found it really. Kept jumping around. One chapter it is all about her and Benton, then Lucy and her money, boss, whatever. Her job, did she quit, will she stay? Her therapy. She needs therapy. Should have dumped all this stuff in two or three chapters and maybe had Scarpetta moving to New York to start something new. Felt like this book satisfied some deadline to get a new book out and did not have any ideas!

Summary: Upswing
Review: The Last Precinct seems to indicate that Cornwell is back on track. In reading earlier books, I wondered about her mechanics and if she weren't distracted by things going on in her personal life. If so, maybe she's resolving them because she seems more focused. I figured out whodunit by the middle of the book but that didn't stop me from finishing it (at least she didn't throw in a perp in the last 30 pages). The one thing that bothers me is the lengthy build-up, then the scanty wrap-up. Anyway, sounds like Cornwell/Scarpetta is ready to move on to a new venue with new dramatic possibilities.

Summary: Terrible
Review: I have read all of Patrica Cornwell's books and until the last one, I loved all of them. The last one was questionable but this one is terrible. I wonder if she is using a ghost writer. I can't believe the same person who wrote her earlier books wrote this one.

Summary: I hated This Book
Review: I have all of Patricia Cornwell's [Kay Scarpetta Series] and I am sorry to say that her last book Black Sunday was terrible, so I should not have bothered to buy The Last Precinct. It was a total waste of my money. I don't know why Cornwell is even bothering to write anymore books. She seems to have lost her touch or doesn't really care to write any more. I guess she has made enough money. I am sick of her going on and on about Lucy and Kays love affairs. Cornwell is really making Kay one dumb lady. I guess I will no longer be buying Cornwells books if she keeps writing the junk she has in her last 4 books.

Summary: Entertaining
Review: This is a continuation of the "Black Notice" story line. I hated "Black Notice", but found this sequel eminently more readable and entertaining. All of the main characters - Scarpetta, Lucy, and Marino - have added to their load of personal problems, and the capture of Chandonne has only exacerbated them. The suspense moves forward at an even pace as Scarpetta's job and freedom are on the line, and the plot is more believable than the prequel. Scarpetta remains a favorite character of mine, but she really needs to lighten up!

Summary: The Last Precinct
Review: So Scarpetta is human. Anyone who doesn't enjoy this book and the peeling back of Kay Scarpetta's layers doesn't know how to enjoy Cornwell's brilliant mind. I don't have to ask myself if I liked the book. Any book that tugs at my mind while it lays on my bedside table waiting for me to return home is worth every dollar. I alternately read fast because I wanted to know how it would end, and slow because I didn't want it to end. I will definitely rush out and buy the next Cornwell novel, just like I have all the others.

Summary: A great follow up ...
Review: I'm a big, big, fan of the Scarpetta series, but I was starting to find Kay a bit tiresome in her self-absorption and her smothering concern of Lucy. This book finds her still somewhat self-absorbed, but I found the plot to be very satisfying--so much so that I did a 7-hour stint last Sunday afternoon because I had to know how it ended.

It left Kay at an interesting crossroad, personally and professionally. What will Ms. Cornwell do next with her overachiever heroine?

Summary: AVID FAN DISAPOINTED
Review: I was sooooooooooo anxiously awaiting the latest Cornwell novel, but unfortunately disapointed by the storyline ! It was confusing, flat and not a smooth storyline. I felt it lacked the mistery and surprising turn of events that Cornwell is so well known for. Hopefully I will make amends on the following novel, or else it would confirm that she has gotten to do this for fame and fortune and no longer out of passion like her novels prior to this one. Should you be a first time reader of Cornwell - start with the Body Farm or the Hornet's Nest to really see her shine !!!
