Rating: Summary: Continuing decline Review: This book appears to be yet the next installment of Cornwell's decline from the quality of her first novel. This disappointing book left far too many loose ends in its wrap-up, though the core story was not bad and was concluded appropriately. Each time I read another Cornwell novel, I swear it will be the last. This time I may take myself at my word.
Rating: Summary: The Last Precinct Review: This particular book by Cornwell is not up to par.The storyline is too convoluted and the antagonist, Scarpetta, needs an anti-depresent. Ms. Cornwell obviously had to write a certain amount of words because much of what is written is unnecessary for the storyline.
Rating: Summary: Loyal fan! Review: I've read the reviews, and although I do agree with the fact that there isn't alot of action in this book, Patricia Cornwell doesn't not tell a bad story! Her Scarpetta novels are the best books I've ever read, and I pre-order everyone of them as soon as I hear the new one is coming out! If she was really such a lousy writer, then you tell me why she's a best-selling author!!
Rating: Summary: Not Like They Used To Be Review: I certainly miss the Kay Scarpetta of Cornwell's early books. Those writings were full of crime, excitement and great forensics. The last few novels, however, are about sexuality, ego and materialism...what a sell out.
Rating: Summary: not THAT bad Review: Oh, common. At least it's Cornwell. This book might not compare favorably to the pace and action of the other Scarpetta books, but at least it's well written (compared, say, to Syndey Sheldon). So Patricia Cornwell tried something new -- so what. Scarpetta's adventures were beginning to run together in my mind anyway, and this book gives a clean transition to Scarpetta's new career in the big apple. Loyal Cornwell fans will find the goodness in The Last Precinct (it is there) and disregard the grumblings of people who are upset by change.
Rating: Summary: More food, please! Review: hmm..well, I do love Patricia Cornwell, and I did scarf this book just as quickly as all of her previous efforts. However..I believe it lacked some of the fire of her preceeding novels. Don't get me wrong, I stand behind her work 110%, but I just feel as if there was something lacking. I love Scarpetta's house and the way she cooks..and the sheer effort she puts into a case...I felt that there was just too much of this novel spent in turmoil. Definitely a lit noir! At any rate, I enjoyed it, and I will continue to buy her novels, but this one left me slightly disappointed.
Rating: Summary: SCARPETTA DOES IT AGAIN Review: I HAVE BEEN A FAITHFUL READER OF CORNWELL SINCE THE BEGINNING. I WAS THRILLED TO SEE ANOTHER SCARPETTA BOOK. I JUST LOVED THE REVAMPING OF ALL THE OLD STORIES AND THE WAY SHE TIED IT TOGETHER KEPT ME ON THE EDGE. I JUST WISH THE ENDING WASN'T RUSHED. THE BUILDUP WAS GREAT, BUT I WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED AT THE LAST 4 CHAPTERS. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR KAY, LUCY AND ESPECIALLY MARINO. KEEP THEM COMING.
Rating: Summary: fairly boring novel Review: I have read all of the Cornwell as well, and can agree that this installment is not up to par at all. I'm not sure what went wrong. I think she tried to pull too many previous plots together, but it appeared strained, and yet she left other plots in the book dangling. I think she also meant this to be a more introspective edition - more of Scarpetta's thoughts and emotions. It comes off tedious and self absorbed. The entire middle 100 pages is way too slow, but if you're interested in police interrogation, you might find it interesting. I did not.I hope she gets back to some good action. If you're a fan, you'll probably want to read it to catch up on some tidbits, but if you've never read Cornwell, start with POstmortem, and NOT this one!
Rating: Summary: If you must have it..wait for the paper back!! Review: I fall for it every time. I think this one HAS to be better than the last. Once again I was disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Beyond Terrible Review: Skip the first boring and depressing 150 pages -- and Kay's pity party that says over and over and over and over and over how terrible it is to be victimized -- which if you bought this book is the way you will feel. And unfortunately, Kay comes across as a neurotic, angry, whining mess -- not someone you really want to spend much time with, let alone the time it takes to read over 400 pages. If Corwall wanted us to understand how the victim of a crime feels, it didn't work. It a takes a third of this book for a real plot to start -- then fizzle out fast. Unless the author plans to stop the series, we know that Kay will survive being accused of murder. The really interesting details of Kay's position as a forensic pathologist are missing. When she does start an interesting case, it is lost immediately in Kay's personal problems and shell shocked non functioning while waiting for everyone else to save her. So, you might want to save your time for something more interesting -- I wish I had.
