Summary: The Hidden Staircase
Review: For you kids out there that don't know, the Nancy Drew series has been around since 1929. It was originally written by Mildred A. Wirt Benson, under the pseudonym 'Carolyn Keene'. The originals looked exactly like this- well, except they didn't have the gold sticker-thing.

But the terrible thing is that the originals were re-written, under the same name, but not by the same person, in the fifties. The books lost the spirit and fire that they had originally had, and, unless you were a frequenter (a LUCKY frequenter) of antique malls, you wouldn't be able to find the original text.

Until now.

These books are the originals, and I personally like them much more than the other, later editions. The stories are longer, the pictures are wonderful (they are) and the story itself is much better.

If you have a choice between a newer version and this one- there's no choice. Get this one.

Review: Go on an mystery with nancy drew and her friend helen. Can you believe it two mysteries at once. One her dad is in trouble and two helens great grandmas mansion is haunted, but she won't leave it because it brings back memories to her in the old colnial times. A fantastic book!

Summary: Haunted Houses and Secret Panels
Review: Good night! Who wouldn't want to spend the day exploring an old house for hidden secrets with none other than Nancy Drew! Her lack of the use of expletives as a teen-ager is as refreshing as her intellect and charity at solving crime for free.

I'm rereading my old, classic, Nancy Drew mystery stories. This one sure was a delight, as Nancy tries to help two old ladies from going crazy -- or selling their house cheaply to a cheat! The book takes Nancy into hidden passages behind secret panels, just a JOY for people who like a good mystery in an old house.

I used to search my own house, hoping for a secret panel!

Summary: Good grammer and well crafted fiction
Review: I believe I got this as a christmas morning gift at 8 years old, or it was a selection I got in one of the first childrens book clubs. I believe it was the first book length thing I ever read. I don't remember the plot, but I do remember one scene-the rat meeting the children in the staircase! Since I am a product of good grammer, I recommend the drew books, becuase they don't talk down to children, and they use good grammer. It will entertain your child, and enrich his exposure to correct speech, without being too acedemic. I hope to see fiction for younger children written as well as the drew is for an older elementary school child.

Summary: One of the better Nancy Drew mysteries...
Review: I read the 1930 version of this book. Although all the original Nancy Drew books are fairly well-written, this is one of the more interesting and exciting books of the series.

Summary: Ethnic stereotypes may be comtemporary, but still repugnant
Review: I read this to my 8 year old. The writing was certainly more interesting than the tired rewritten versions that came later. However along with the charm and perspective of a different era, also come the ethnic sensibilities. I suggest reading the book together or at least discussing it. There are highly disturbing (and repetitive) references to the villain who is clearly meant to be Jewish. His Jewishness is not seen as incidental to his evil. His henchwoman is his servant who had to be black. All sorts of repugnant physical stereotypes are made to her with the implication that her race, her physical attributes and her wickedness are all related. The detective story is well done, but it's impossible to separate out these other elements. That's why I think it is important to discuss these with the younger reader. Something positive can actually evolve in terms of helping her to understand the roots of racism and its context within our own history.

Summary: Creepy and scary... The Best Book Ever!
Review: I was so scared when I read this. This was so creepy and awfully scary. This was also very good mystery book. I love this! "The Hidden Staircase" is better mystery book than even Agatha Christie's books and it it scarier than Stephen King. This is classical book! I give this 5 stars and if I could, it could get 100 stars!
