Rating: Summary: Surley comparable to Austen Review: I have just copleted writing a 4,000 word essay comparins the book to pride and prejudice. Seths completely immerses you in to The society and just as austen feed of his characters who show you what life was really like. His prose if not his dramatic irony are surley comparable to Austen.Read this book and you will have the characters and the setting with you for life.
Rating: Summary: It saved my sanity in the hospital! Review: I was hospitalized because I needed round-the-clock antibiotics for a staph infection. I felt generally fine but had to be confined, the sort of situation that ordinarily would drive me nuts from boredom and frustration. Fortunately I brought this book with me. It allowed me to treat my 6-day hospital stay like a cruise. At one point I told the doctors, "You don't have to discharge me for another 400 pages." This book is not for everyone. The few negative comments here largely come from people who want more action or a different sort of handling of characters. Some detractors complain that "It's not up to Jane Austen [or Dickens or Tolstoy]," which seems like a quibble. This is a great, rambling saga more full of people and events than characters and plot. To really enjoy it, you need to settle into it.
Rating: Summary: A beautiful tale Review: It is wonderful to discover a book of real beauty; 'A Suitable Boy' is a painting in words. In the tradition of the great writers such as Dickens and Tolstoy, the story is not cosy or perhaps particularly satisfying; but neither is real life. On completing the novel I wanted the end to be different, romantic....but Lata made the right choice. I only hope that Vikram Seth writes a sequel to this wonderful book so I can find out if Lata and all of her family and friends are happy with their choices.
Rating: Summary: I'm still reading it Review: I've been through the book once and, as is my custom, intend to read it many times more. As it is a culture that I am not familiar with, it was difficult, at times to grasp the continuity of the plot and subplots. However, this did not stop me from being drawn into the storylines, eagerly reading one page so that I could turn to the other. It is a rich, rich, rich book that requires a comfy chair and a cup of tea to devote yourself to it. Some things were left unresolved but the purpose of the book is not to tell you about these characters start to finish. Things go unresolved, that's life. I was heartbroken at the ending but again, that's life. Ideally, for me, it would have gone the other way but that would have been me imposing my life and times onto a different era.
Rating: Summary: A more than excellent read! Review: I am so glad I found this book. Mr. Seth shows an amazing perception of the feminine heart. The political scenes, I must admit, I skipped. It is an enlightening tale of human nature and paints a vivid picture of everyday human existance in a very colorful India. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: A cultural experience Review: You are immediately drawn into the rich, deeply satisfying world of India in the 1950s - replete with a myriad of interesting and believable characters. Once you begin, you won't want to leave the wonderous world that Vikram Seth has created. Well worth the effort!
Rating: Summary: A truly well written and unique approach Review: I was first enthralled by this carefully constructed and intricately plotted book when it was first released about 6 years ago. When I read the reviews of the author's latest novel, I was inspired to pick up "A Suitable Boy" once again. Although I was concerned that I knew the answer to "will she, and who?," I enjoyed it as much as when I first discovered this excellent writer.
Rating: Summary: amazing!!!!!!!!!!! Review: I wonder how anyone who ever read this book could rate it less than 5 stars... There is only one man whom I could compare Vikram Seth to, and that is, the literary genius, Tolstoy. I have read "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina" but still, there is something about Vikram Seth's language, his description, his use of words that is undescribable. I finished "A suitable Boy" in three days, and didnt sleep for a wink... the second time, I wanted to go through it slower, and really get the pleasure of it, but alas, I finished it in four days. Both times, on finishing the book, I felt as if the world that he had built for me had just been snatched away and all that was left, was a sad emptiness... This is by far the BEST book I have ever read. Reading it is an awesome experience!!
Rating: Summary: The most fantastic book I have ever read. Review: I have never read a book in which the characters are so vividly portrayed. The political chapters are well executed and make the book more than just a love story (which would also have been an excelent novel). The characters and style of writing transported me to post-war India, where I spent many a happy hour with this book in my hands. A wonderful read.
Rating: Summary: Even if you haven't read War and Peace - Read this Book! Review: Don't be put off by the size of this novel - a few pages in and you'll be drawn into a world which however different from your own is totally absorbing. The story-lines intertwine throughout, religious intollerence, the politics after the partition of India, the central character's search for her own happiness, despite her neurotic mother's attemps to find her the right boy. After the 1,474 page you'll still want more!
