Summary: This book can be reach people in a very personal way.
Review: Bill Myers' book, "Eli", successfully satisfies a long-standing need rarely addressed outside of childrens' books. This need is that for Biblical stories written in new and involving ways, such that they attend to a mature reader's imagination, as well as aid in their spiritual growth. The average household in America contains 5 Bibles, yet it remains the least read book per household in which a copy is owned. Of the countless millions of given reasons for unread Bibles, it is safe to venture that one reason many people don't read them the same way they would any other book is that it often seems to read comparably to a history textbook -- the stories are recounted factually, succinctly, and with scarce descriptive details given. "Eli" transforms the Biblical account of the life of Christ (taking great liberty when adding details) into a vastly more pleasant style and format to read, by rewriting it in novel form. Although there is an abundance of fictional elements included to establish "Eli" as a story by it's own right, it is, effectively, a wonderfully narrative rendition of Christ's ministry in a richly depicted and well-known setting. Using simple details commonplace in modern fiction, such as facial expressions, emotional responses, and character development, Bill Myers has essentially supplied that desperately needed, very personal element of human kinship and commonality, allowing "Eli" to provide a personally engaging, highly imaginitive, and refreshing to read presentation of a unique twist on what is undeniably the single most significant and powerful string of events in history.

Summary: Intriguing, well-written premise, but had several problems
Review: Although not a fan of the so-called "Christian" publishers, I have enjoyed immensely many of this author's books. The premise of an alternative universe wherein the Messiah has yet to arrive was the reason I bought the book. Character development was excellent, as I was immediately drawn into the storyline. I laughed and cried with their ups and downs and really felt part of the story. However, the little 'niggles' continued throughout and I felt they distracted me continually. For instance, the dating system, which would not be as it was with no Anno Domini (AD= after birth of Christ); the usage of geographic names tied into Christian names (both of these anachronisms, for lack of a better describer, are mentioned in another reviewer's contribution); the inability of the main character"Connie" to realize only sporadically how the plot paralleling the life of Christ was unfolding, the total LACK of ANY explanation as to WHAT was the mainstream "religion" in the USA...that is my main gripe. It wasn't any form of Judiasm, but obviously had broken away from the Hebrew tradition, but we were never told this. When you keep in mind that Christ was born a Jew, having the character also being Jewish doesn't jibe with the remaining characters also not being Jewish, but "something else". I feel that this lack of coherence in translating the Christ story over into another setting was its main weakness. Aside from that, however, I considered the story a strong one and would recommend it to everyone for a very inspiring and uplifting read.

Summary: Eli
Review: This one of the best books I have heard. Bill Myers is excellent writer. Eli is sensational. Couldn't quit listening. It makes you reconsider your own faith. What would it be like if Christ came today to live among us and perform the miracles he performed back then? A must read book!

Summary: Awesome!
Review: Just finished reading Eli and am awed! Eli is one of the best books that I've read in a long time. The mere thought of Jesus walking this earth in our time was so inspiring. Myers is an excellant author who writes a book with such feeling. Gives a new meaning to WWJD. I would recommend this book to all.

Summary: Easy and Interesting Read
Review: Captivating, interesting and easy to read. Bill Myers has out done himself again.

Summary: Continuity problems hamper story
Review: I really like Bill Myers' work. However, two things bothered me throughout. 1st, the dates in the "alternate" reality. Our date (AD 2000) is based on the birth of Christ. This should not be the case in the "alternate" reality if Christ (Eli) was not born until (our date) 1970. 2nd, the use of place-names like Santa Monica. "Santa" is saint. Maybe I'm off base here, but how can there be "saints" if there is no Christendom. Other instances of these kinds of continuity errors occur throughout.

Besides this, I enjoyed the placing of Christ in modern day. The healing of the racist leader's daughter (Centurion's servant) hit home. If you want Bill Myers at his best, try "Blood of Heaven".

Summary: Wonderful look at Jesus' life
Review: This book gives a whole new look at the life of Jesus, not to mention the life of the main character, Conrad. Bill Myers did a great job of describing what Jesus' ministry might have been like if he was around today. At the same time, "Eli" is a great story about one man following Jesus and learning what justice and mercy truly are.

Summary: A Fresh Look at Old Truths...
Review: Those familiar with my fiction know that I believe storytelling's greatest strength lies in its ability to stir up our thoughts. By putting the Gospel in our current day and culture, I've moved Christ out of my comfort zone and put him back in my face where he can test me, challenge me, and encourage me. By stripping away the historical and cultural trappings that I hide behind to insulate myself from his truths, Jesus Christ no longer remains the Sunday School, flannel board character that lived 2000 years ago, but once again becomes the radical life-changer he was the first time I encountered him. That's what happened to me in the writing. I pray that's what will happen to you in the reading. Blessings, Bill Myers
