Rating: Summary: Not my cup of mead Review: Though many people like this book, I must conclude that it's not my thing. Laurell Hamilton promises a story of modern-day faeries and their complex court intrigue, which in theory is right up my alley, but I didn't really get into it.I agree with a previous reviewer who complains that "every developing scene is a sex scene". By about page 100, my significant other was laughing because I kept yelling aloud, "Is she going to sleep with HIM TOO?" The entire plot of the book seems to consist of Merry's sexual adventures. That would be OK if it were good erotica, but there is far too much gory violence to sustain the sexy mood. To sum up the book: Sex scene, gore scene, sex scene, gory sex scene...well, you get the picture. For urban faerie adventures with more plot, try Charles de Lint (Jack of Kinrowan), Emma Bull (War for the Oaks), James A. Hetley (The Summer Country), Diana Wynne Jones (Fire and Hemlock), or Nancy Springer (Fair Peril).
Rating: Summary: A KISS OF SHADOWS Review: This was the worse book that I have ever read. I had to force myself to finish the book. The book was boring, no plot & frankly I thought it was stupid. There was no pace or energy in the movement of the characters. The author spent two chapters on "Merry" walking down a path to see the "Queen". Unless you are a fan of Laurell Hamilton don't waste your time or money.
Rating: Summary: Move over Anita! Review: I've been a big fan of Hamilton's Anita Blake novels, so I was worried about her newest venture. I was afraid that she'd go the way of that other famous female vampire writer. I'm happy to say that I was wrong. If you're like me and you like a good fairy tale, then you're going to love this book. I was half-convinced I was catching sight of mysterious creatures out of the corner of my eye after finishing this one. Merry is a heck of a protagonist. A little too human to be what she needs to be. (Kind of how Anita started out). Plus, the book is steamy hot. Fans of Hamilton already know that she can write the heck out of a sex scene and this book doesn't disappoint. If you liked this, start at the beginning of the Anita Blake books. Merry and Anita also remind me of Evanovich's Stephanie and Grafton's Kinsey. If you're in the mood for more chicks who kick butt and look good doing it, I suggest the movies: The Matrix, Fried Green Tomatoes, Thelma and Louise, and the albums: Fly by the Dixie Chicks, Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt, and Upstream by Anna Madorsky.
Rating: Summary: The Fae -- As you have NEVER seen them before! Review: Laurell K Hamilton's books have always been captivating. Hamilton features strong, self-sure women who aren't afraid to stand up and fight for what they believe. Kiss Of Shadows' Princess Meredith Nic Essus is no different. A mortal princess caught up in the immortal world of Faerie, "Merry Gentry" has spent years hiding from her blood-thirsty relatives. When her identity is revealed, she has no choice but to return to court and face her inherited destiny. As an heir to the throne however, she has many enemies, and few friends who can be trusted. This alluring first-look at an intriguing world of sex, lies, deceit and magic will draw you in and have you begging for more!
Rating: Summary: Different can be Good Review: I'd heard many complaints about this book before I read it, of how Laurell K. Hamilton had diverged from her normal writing style, and how many of her fans were disappointed. If you can't handle steamy sex scenes in you books, then yes, this is not a book for you, but for those of you that can, this author is finally coming into her own. I think the fact she hasn't held back anything in this book, and rest assure, someone warned her againist some of it somewhere, makes the book all the better, some of the best writers in history have been those willing to write what some might not want to hear.
Rating: Summary: The Sensual Fey Review: Hamilton brings us in to a world of magic, politics & lustful sex. Merry the main character is an independant strong female who is thrust back in to her fey world. The faeries are very different from those of childhood novels they are ruthless and also terribly sensual, with many extremes. This book is what sexual fantasies are made from, yet it has a strong story line, which is very fast paced. I was up until 4am reading this and it was done in 2 nights and I was left wanting the next in the series immediately. Sometimes books are just not long enough :) I would reccommend this to fantasy and erotica lovers alike.
Rating: Summary: OK - not a page turner Review: I was intrigued by the concept, but found the book came up a little short. It was mildly entertaining. There really was no plot until somewhere past the middle of the book, when our heroine finally returns to Faerie. Before that, it seems to be all sex and action. I probably won't read any more in the series, but then again, I did read the book and not just quit halfway through it.
Rating: Summary: i love Merry. Review: i enjoyed this book so much,i read it again after i finished.true the plot is a little...iffy in places, but i didnt really notice.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: I read most of this book in one sitting. I couldn't put it down! It was so good!!! Okay, for those of you who squirm at sex scenes and things like that, don't read it. This is erotica crossed with sci-fi, but that's what makes it so great... borrow it from a friend, then come back and by it. ;)
Rating: Summary: Plot of a ...movie Review: I was really intrigued by the plot of a fairy princess private investigator at odds with her community of magical creatures and I had a great time with this book for the first few pages. But by the end I was so disgusted that I threw it in the garbage. (I didn't even want to take it to the used book store because I didn't want to be responsible for someone else having to suffer through it!) Okay, to be honest I didn't even finish the last thirty pages. The plot was so weak and so stupid that by the time the heroine HAD to have sex with a dozen handsome men or face a horrible fate I wanted to be sick. The author is obviously a capable writer and the characters could have been really fascinating. Why did this have to descend to the level where the sex scenes became the reason for the plot rather then the plot being the reason for the sex scenes? ... I guess I'd recommend this book if you just want to read about an S&M loving fairy having sex with every male she encounters ... But if you actually want a plot, characters that make sense, some mystery, adventure, or even a dark voyage into the realm of the fey save your money for some other more ambitious book.
