Rating: Summary: Takes a deist view of providence, else wise a good book. Review: Dallas call providence "impersonal"in the book and says that one does not need to believe what the Church of Jesus Christ has held to be true in these and similar issues.See how he handles the "lillie of the fields" etc.portion of the sermon on the mt.-totally Deistic !
Rating: Summary: Read--Think--Grow--Read--Think--Grow--Read--Think--Grow.... Review: To me, a must for the serious Christian reader. Dallas Willardis not an easy read, he is a worthwhile read, requiring comtemplationand introspection. He'll challenge you to think as you haven't before and you'll grow in the process. At times the book was a arduous journey, other times I couldn't put it down, but at all times it drew me close to Christ.
Rating: Summary: Compulsory reading Review: Although somewhat turgid in his writing style, Willard has hit the nail on the head (hard!) about what's wrong with the Church, without coming across as a sour-faced know-it-all. All the reviews about "Divine Conspiracy" being a "must-read" are too understated: READ THIS, especially if you are a leader in Christian ministry. So why do so few Christians talk about the Kingdom of God, when it seems to be at the heart of life in Jesus?
Rating: Summary: A refreshing view of kingdom living Review: This is by far the best book I have ever read. I find myself reading and re-reading passages, pages, chapters...something that I almost never find myself doing in reading books. Dallas offers refreshing and earth shattering insight into the teachings of Jesus, expounding greatly on the essential tenets and principles of kingdom living. What he offers is a refreshing call to discipleship and spiritual formation. If the church universal were to truly heed these words, we would see a revival in our congregations beyond measure and comprehension. This is the word the church needs to become relevant to our post-modern, individualistic world.
Rating: Summary: An absolutely essential textbook on discipleship. Review: As Christ's disciple and a missionary, my mission is to "go and make disciples of all nations." This book will stay with me wherever God sends me in the world as a textbook for my continued discipline and a guidebook as I fulfill my mission to disciple others. A must-have for every Christian who seeks the ultimate human experience -- intimacy with God!
Rating: Summary: A great chewy read Review: A life changing book. Buy it and read it. I've already bought copies for friends.
Rating: Summary: A Gripping Challenge to Christians Review: Do you want to know how to be a disciple of Christ, and not just a lukewarm, unchanged "Christian"? Make it a point to get this book and read it. The literary quality of most Christian books is disappointing, to say the least. Willard, a professor of philosophy at USC, is a learned man who brings many relevant authors from all eras into his discussion. Yet his style is direct, earnest and accessible to any reader at the college level or above. But first a warning: reading this book and applying it will usher a drastic change into your life. The treatment of the Sermon on the Mount, and in particular of the Beatitudes, is simply the best I've seen.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! A light in the darkness. Answers many questions Review: This is a book that should be read by every Christian and Lay Leader. If you are sincerely seeking a relationship with the living Christ for today, this book will change your life in Him forever. I have grown tremendously as a result of Mr. Willard's excellent book.
Rating: Summary: Should be subtitled : Spirituality in the 21st Century Review: Dr. Williard is an extraordinary teacher. I know of no other book which is so absorbing and well written that brings Jesus Christ alive as if he lived and breathed among us in Middletown, U.S.A. and his exploits were being reported daily on the 6 pm news. (HE is alive today, but the news never covers HIS story). After goring some Christian-claiming fads such as TV evangelists, the author closely examines the life of Jesus of Nazareth and illuminates HIS teachings in a modern perspective. With a stunning breadth of knowledge, he challenges the reader on every page to understand the meaning of Christ's teachings today. To paraphrase noted author Richard J. Foster from the introduction, this book represents the "Sistine Chapel" of Christian writing. The final volume of Prof. Willard's trilogy, it will really restore the joy in your life.
Rating: Summary: Magnificent!! Review: I've only read up through chapter 3, and I am astounded by the truths that I've found. This book has implications of the most profound sort regarding how Christians view their world and live their lives. And in response to an earlier reader who said the book contained "life-giving pearls of wisdom found in 100 other books," the author himself said in his preface that there is nothing "new" in his book. It contains insights that others have written about for centuries. However, I have personally never read a book that has taken all of those insights and woven them together in a such as thought-provoking, life-changing, convincing whole as this book has. I unreservedly recommend it.
