Summary: Too PC/Liberal
Review: Definitely not in same class as Patterson's prior novels

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: It was better than reading cereal boxes, barely.
Review: If you are left of center and hate Republicans, the right to life and the NRA this could be the book for you. Although the plot and characters are still very thin as are the disguised "real" folks, i.e., VP Gore and Mort Zuckerman. Wait for the paperback.

Summary: A strong start, a disappointing finish
Review: After having read 'Silent Witness', I was looking forward to Richard North Patterson's 'No Safe Place'. Unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. Mr. Patterson is at his strongest at the beginning of the book; where he discusses Kerry Kilcannon's life growing up in Newark, with his abusive father, his mother, and distant brother. He also shines, when he focuses on characters such as Liam Dunn (Kerry's political patron). It is Mr. Patterson's overly cliched story-line, and shallow main characters who ruin the entire book. Whether it is the anti-abortion stalker, who is simply written as a fundamentalist wacko, or Lara (the tv reporter), these people lack none of the depth of some of the minor characters in the book. It seems as though Mr. Patterson simply took a screenplay for a tv-movie of the week and made it a novel instead. As a final note, Mr. Patterson probably needs to stick to his legal thrillers. Nothing is more disappointing than to have to sit and read someone's political viewpoints, and this one contained Mr. Patterson's thinly disguised liberal leanings. I was so tired of the book that I simply skimmed the last 40 pages to make sure that everything I though would happen did... and it did

Summary: A political page-turner!
Review: This being my first jump into RNP's works, I was very excited upon receipt of 'No Safe Place'. I was not let down! This book touched on many relevant issues on today's political scene- from candidate positions, to the media's role, and the extent to which a candidate for the presidency can have a personal life. At the same time, I found the story line and characters appealling- especially Kerry Kilcannon. RNP's portrayal of Kerry showed that a candidate could be flawed, have made mistakes, but still be a leader- someone worth following. All the while, the suspense of a potential assassination lingered throughout the pages. All in all, an excellent read, and one that will cause me to run out and pick up another RNP book today!

Summary: Excellent & Original
Review: This was a great mix of fiction-excitement and politics. Being from New Jersey, I was able to confer with someone close to Neward politics and he said how accurate the Newark scenes were. While I don't often feel sympathy for politicians, this book at least lets us know what they have to go through to become President. WE COULD REALLY USE A KERRY KILCANNON IN POLITICS! Also, if anyone is a R.N. Patterson fan, you should read "Private Screening" and "Silent Witness" as small aspects of No Safe Place relate to the prior books. NOTE: you need not read them to enjoy Place.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: I am a great fan of Patterson's books, and have oft times preferred reading his writings to those of John Grisham. But I am sorely disappointed in NO SAFE PLACE. This is not a mystery of any genre, but a story of a love between a presidentail wannabe and his soul-mate. All in all, I suppose this was a good read, as I did finish the book, but it is not Richard North Patterson at his best. If he wishes to change his writing venue, please let us know!

Summary: Disappointing compared to any of Patterson's previous works.
Review: Getting through No Safe Place was a challenge in itself. Having had great expectations going into the novel I was disappointed in the story's weak story line, lack of suspense, and for Patterson, sub par writing.

I have read all of Patterson's previous works and there is no question that No Safe Place is his worst! I realize he tries to cross the line from the legal thriller to a "political" thriller, but is unsuccessful.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Not bad, but not up to his usual page-turning standards.
Review: Maybe I'm just overloaded with politics with all the real-world melodrama lately, but this wasn't Richard North Patterson's best. "Degree of Guilt" is still one of the best legal thrillers I've ever read, and I read a lot of them. I found the plotting in this book incredibly obvious (was anyone surprised by any of the so-called relevations?), the characters cliches and the romance very harlequiny. Nothing wrong with that, but not my thing and not what I expected from RNP. So, not a horrible choice for a dull day, but wait for the paperback.

Summary: Please keep trying, Mr. Patterson
Review: NO SAFE PLACE by Richard North Patterson

Richard North Patterson should find "a safe place" to hide. His latest is a political pot-boiler which was a great disappointment to me as one of his long-time readers.

Patterson's book does offer several bits of information: all Irish men are drunkards and wife-beaters, all Irish moms are saintly and long-suffering, all politicians have illicit hot love affairs which they hide from wives and voters with straight-faced lies (that is perfectly all right, of course), all Republicans are crooked with evil agendas. all Democrats are on the side of right and justice...

His plot is painfully and obviously taken from the Kennedy assassinations, the Reagan near-assassination, the Clinton sex scandal cover-up with the help of the unscrupulous news media.

We don't need a President like Kerry and we don't need more novels like this one. Too bad the stalker missed his target; most readers would have silently cheered.

Let's hope Mr. Patterson returns to writing his great mystery adventure stories which I have always enjoyed.

Summary: Patterson Delivers Another Winner
Review: Kerry Kilcannon is a man with a rough beginning, firm convictions, and the integrity and drive that makes him someone we can all look up to, whether we agree or disagree with his stands. This topical novel, which is amazingly close to reality (coincidentally), is entertaining and absolutely riveting. I found myself rooting for Kerry and wishing we had people like him in Washington. Though a departure from his usual legal thriller genre, Richard North Patterson spins another can't-put-down story. Highly recommended for Patterson fans.
