Rating: Summary: This book is a truly motivational and inspiring read. Review: Famous talk show host Oprah Winfrey reveals the regime she followed that changed her body and her life forever. With the help of her trainer and exercise physiologist, Bob Greene, the two collaborated on the development of an easy to follow, ten-step program, of diet and exercise. The program is constructed to fit easily into any daily routine. Greene explains, at length, why daily exercise and proper nutrition are essential in leading a healthy and happy life. The book combines both the intellectual expertise of Greene, as well as, the positive encouragement of Winfrey. As Oprah explains, the only way to become physically fit is through self-acceptance. By reaching a true understanding of this concept, one can finally "make the connection."
Rating: Summary: Wish I'd have started the steps sooner! Review: Make The Connection was motivational, informative, easy to follow, and written with the reader in mind. Oprah contributed her personal story of struggle and triumph, while Bob offered his expert information and advice. Never once in the book does Bob or Oprah imply that these are easy to follow steps to a better life. They simply state that if you do follow them, you will get the results you're after. I began the steps 2 months ago and have lost 23 pounds. I have 25 lbs to go and am enjoying every single step of this journey. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is intimidated by the weight loss/fitness industry. Exercise is for all of us, not just the fit! Bob Greene and Oprah provide you with the information you need to begin your own journey.
Rating: Summary: common sense Review: I've read this book and it works if you use it but its nothing new. If you want to save yourself some time from buying it drink water eat a well balanced meal, and exercise. Everything Oprah touches turns to gold. If only I could get 14.95 for my advice!
Rating: Summary: Ten Step Program for the first day of the rest of your life Review: After watching the Oprah Winfrey show and seeing Bob Greene
and Oprah discussing "Make the Connection, I decided to buy
the book and the journal. Since reading the book 38 days ago
I haven't looked back.(I've been moving too fast!!)
What made the difference between this
book and the other kazillion "fitness books?" The fact that
a "real" person tried the technique described in the book
and showed the world that it can work. Sure, Oprah can afford
a personal trainer but what about us middle income earners?
You don't need a personal trainer and a cook in order to follow the program. It isn't motivational
in the sense that it pumps you up with a load of "you can do it's if you really want to" - it is inspirational in that you just
FEEL that you can accomplish the goals by following the ten
steps. The comments by Oprah about her day to day ordeal and
how she overcame some of the hurdles (like will the pain EVER stop?) really hit home and make it workable. If you have been struggling - but not getting anywhere with your level of fitness - if you have used up all of the excuses as to why you CAN'T do it - read the book. It'll
inspire you to try one more time - for the last time - it
doesn't get any easier than this. Thanks Bob and Oprah - for a job well done.
Rating: Summary: Grimly Ironic. Review: After going through so many visibly successful "slimming phases," Winfrey has arguably shed more pounds in the aggregate than the ill-fated Donner Party, and her directives should not be taken lightly. I myself followed this wonderful book's program for several weeks before my second wedding, and was able to wow my betrothed with a slender new physique in time for our romantic yet financially disastrous trip to Petit St. Vicent. Sadly just like its esteemed author, I fell into a subsequent bout of severe gluttony that rapidly erased my hard-won gains. However I took heart in Ms. Winfrey's own phoenix-like dieting program, convinced that one day success would again be mine. I found the quiet example of Winfrey's co-author, a Mr. Bob Greene, to be no less inspiring. Greene is an object lesson in tenacity and dedication as he daily addresses the Sisyphean task of being Ms. Winfrey's personal trainer.
Rating: Summary: Grimly Ironic. Review: Ms. Winfrey is famous for experiencing somatic changes as regular and dramatic of those of the fabled Incredible Hulk. For this reason one is tempted to dismiss any advice that she might proffer on the topics of diet, nutrition, or general bodily health. Rating: Summary: Still Making The Connection Review: I wasn't ready early on to Make the Connection but now I am. I bought the CD. Oprah begins the CD talking about her struggles with weight. She takes you on her journey early in her career all the way to meeting Rosie and Bob and includes a lot of the low points in between. I could really relate to some of her stories. Then Bob steps in and gives you his version of meeting Oprah. He then walks you through the 10 steps of weight loss and taking control of your life. I felt like he was right in my living room talking to me! The steps are easy to follow and logically sequenced. He talks about the common errors people make when they exercise and what not to do. He also gives you a really good scale to gauge if you are working out hard enough. He talks about what foods are good for you and how to tell if you are eating out of boredom, stress or other emotions. I was so motivated by the CD, I listened to it again and again. I play it in my car to keep me motivated and focused. If you are ready to Make the Connection, this is the book for you!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: Easy to understand, motivating, touching. Makes me wanna work harder to achieve my fitness goals. You go Oprah!
Rating: Summary: Best Book I have ever read! Review: I love this book. I also use it in conjunction with the "make the connection" video. The best sound advice out there. There are no magic pills or quick fixes here. Hard work and determination are the key. It is ultimately about "self-love". I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: book & journal Review: I thought the book was excellent. It is based on sound scientific information. I am a biochemist, and there is so much misinformation regarding metabolism and fat loss, that I was happy to read proven scientific fact instead of hype. It breaks down the steps to permanent weight loss into 10 steps. In the first week, I have already lost 8 lbs. The accompanying journal is a great accessory. It is helping me to stay on track and making me feel accountable to something, if only to a book. I find it tremendously useful.
