Rating: Summary: SANDFORD'S EASY PREY Review: THE PREY BOOKS HAVE BEEN MY FAVORATES FOR YEARS. IT IS A SHAME THE DOLLAR PUMP HAS GRABED ANOTHER AUTHOR. WE AS READERS CAN GET TRASH IN ALL SHADES AND SHAPES. WE HAVE TRUST IN SANDFORD'S ABILITY TO PRODUCE SOMETHING OF HIGH QUALITY AS IN YEARS PAST. HERE IS HOPEING HE WILL.
Rating: Summary: CHILLING BUT CONTRIVED Review: Characters are either on the take or on the make in John Sandford's complexly plotted detective thriller Easy Prey. With this, the eleventh in his "Prey" series, the author maintains the swiftly paced drama that distinguished his previous works (Certain Prey, Secret Prey, et al). And, of course, he reprises the iconoclastic Minneapolis Deputy Police Chief Lucas Davenport. Sage and determined, randy and reckless, Davenport is an appealing paradox. He proceeds with studied determination to track down an elusive psychotic killer, but drives his black Porsche on a crowded highway at over 100 mph., as he playfully eludes highway patrolmen. This is done simply to impress a woman (one of four who intrigue him). Most implausible of the distaff quartet is Jael Corbeau, a potter cum model who sleeps with her brother, and has a "wedge-shaped, edgy, big-eyed" face. Ex-lover police woman Marcy Sherrill seems more worthy of Davenport's fantasies, as does former fiancé Weather Karkinnen, or college sweetheart Catrin who is looking for an out from her routine marriage. Nonetheless, despite apparent contradictions in his protagonist's personality, author Sandford, the pseudonym of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist John Camps, is such an able craftsman that Davenport's diverging qualities serve to enhance rather than detract. When green-eyed mega model Allie'e Maison is fatally strangled during a party at which the veteran sleuth suspects that drugs were passed like peanuts, he knows that the media and city officials will be barking at his heels to solve the crime. Matters become even more complicated when a search of the party site reveals a second body crammed in a closet, another woman with a major dent in her skull. Police Chief Rose Marie Roux who "had lost thirty pounds on a new all-protein diet and now was thinking about a face lift" and a mayor who is considering hair implants both demand action. On the third day of the case Roux sets aside thoughts of her physical appearance to mutter, "We've had a cop shot and four killings in one day.........What're we gonna do?" An apt question. Davenport has called in Del Capslock, an undercover police officer to assist but he needs more help than that as trails turn into dead ends - literally, with the body count rising. Add to the confusion Allie'e's totally dysfunctional family, which includes parents from a small town in Minnesota who pushed her into child beauty pageants, and an off-the-wall evangelist brother, Tom Olson, an "ecstatic" who enthralls his faithful with stigmata. Olson believes Alie'e has been forced into an evil world of drugs, greed, and wanton sex. ... John Sandford doesn't disappoint in penning a lusty, exciting yarn Easy Prey is a dizzying ride, a thrill packed read.
Rating: Summary: what a disappointment Review: First of all, I would like to say that I am a long time fan of the "Prey" novels. I can never wait for the next novel from this talented author. However, this last book was extremely different from his previous "Prey" books. It focused primarily on Lucas' love life, instead of the murder/mystery. I enjoy his plots, based on detective work, along with a love twist, but this was ridiculous. If I wanted a book about a mans love life, I would have bought a cheap romance book. The case wasn't even solved by skill, but luck. And while the case should have received more attention, we only could read of his sex life. Sorry, but I hope the next one's better, it would be ashame if they continued like this one. I usually enjoy them so much. I hope I will be able to continue to do so. In short, less sex life, more mystery. Weather's return would be appreciated.
Rating: Summary: disappointing prey Review: I saved this new prey for my vacation. I was not inpressed. I thought the story took off well and grabed my interest. But the ending was not Mr. Sanfords usual. There was no way the reader could be the detective. The bad guy was from out of the blue. I have to say that it seemed Mr. Sanford is trying too hard and cranking them out too fast. Slower is better.
Rating: Summary: Boring, boring , boring Review: I struggled to finish this book. Kept on turning the pages hoping that it would improve, it didn't. Characters were dull, plot confusing. A waste of time and money.
Rating: Summary: not quite easy...... Review: I have read all of Sanford's Prey/Davenport series and they were all quite good. Easy Prey was a good story, but it was a bit different from the rest of the series. If you haven't read any of the others (therefore, aren't comparing) this was a great book. Multiple suspects for several murders that may or may not be connected...It keeps you guessing until the end. The characters and their relationships to each other are surprising, and unpredictable. The story kicks right into high gear when a super-model and her female acquaintance are found murdered at a party with a large number of guests as possible suspects. The suspects range from the parents (whose lives revolve around their super-model daughter's life, a fundamentalist preacher (her brother), a fashion photographer, an artist/potter/lover , a banker, and a drug dealer, just to name a few. The number of suspects alone keeps you "on your toes." If you have read other books in this series you may find this book a bit short on the depth of Lucas Davenport in certain areas, but you will still enjoy this novel. The main difference is that this book had a quicker put together feel than the others. After reading this one, you will want to definitely read the other Prey novels from Sanford!!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I have not finished the book yet but I decided to check out the reviews to see if I was missing something. I have been looking forward to reading this book as I am a huge fan of the other Davenport books. But I am having a hard time sticking with this. The plot is confusing and I don't care about any of the characters this time. Did the same author really write this? The only good thing is I am reading a library copy and am not out any cash!
Rating: Summary: No More, I Pray Review: A 49-year-old reader from Honolulu, Hawaii! Mr. Sandford, please end this watered-down formula and retire Lucas Davenport for the good of us all! I can't believe the publishers actually unleashed this tripe on the reading public. Tired jokes, no character development and dialog as witty as string. Reading it was a painfully dull experience. I kept waiting for it to get better, but it never did. It seemed the writer was bored with writing the story - and he passed that feeling on to his readers.
Rating: Summary: A Waste of Time and Money Review: I've read all of the Prey books, and have generally been a fan. Easy Prey is by far the worse, just a plot outline masquerading as a novel. Even though I've read the previous books, I had trouble keeping Lucas' assistants straight, with the possible exception of Del. This book is much more of a police procedural than the previous ones, and it isn't a very good one. Here's hoping that Sandford returns to the winner's column with his next Prey.
Rating: Summary: Lacks sizzle; not a lot of steak either Review: I've been a John Sandford (and Lucas Davenport) fan for years, and I'm sorry to say that Easy Prey is just not as good as its predecessors. That's not to say it's bad. The great regular cast of characters is there, but they're not even close to being the astute and cohesive investigative team they have been in the past. The bizarre character names Mr. Sandford has invented are maddening. I even spotted five typographical errors. Let's just call it an "okay read" and wait, hopefully, for the next Prey.
