Rating: Summary: As time goes on, I dislike this book more and more... Review: This being my first Sandford book, I read it during a business trip, feeding my need to read after finishing the awesome 'A Thin Dark Line' by Tami Hoag. 'Easy Prey' was the only thing that looked worthwhile in the hotel convenient store, and MAN I wish I'd waited until getting to the airport to scour through a more comprehensive assortment.I tried to be optimistic, and actually finished the thing, but the main character, Davenport, was as unappealing to me as wet newspaper. Ditto for everyone else, especially Corbeau--and the murder victim and everyone surrounding that whole "scene". These characters didn't arouse enough sympathy to even burp a cesspool, and I daresay if I ever ran into a cop like Davenport, the mafia may enlist me anytime. I understand his character is probably spread across the entire 'Prey' series, but I haven't the time nor the inclination to find out. The author is obviously talented, his writing style quick and witty, but that alone can't save a book if the plot sucks and the "killer" is someone he just seemed to pull out of his a** at what, the last 5 pages or something? The whole setup left a bad taste in my mouth to begin with--the whole male testosterone-charged, "oooh, I'm a cop and I drive a Porsche, I'm also a millionaire and my worst worries are how to juggle three women at once". Come on people, my cat could come up with something better than this. At least he'd leave the hubris in the litterbox.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't finish it! Review: I've always liked his books but like so many of my favorite authors he's produced something unreadable. How does that happen? How is it possible that there are others here giving it 5 stars and calling it "unputdownable"? There were so many characters... I counted 8 different characters mentioned on one page. I read 225 pages ... skipped to the end and gave it a toss. Should have read the reviews first.
Rating: Summary: Sandford Disappoints Review: I've read all of the books in the Prey series and this, without a doubt, is Sandford's worst effort/installment. There are simply too many characters that Sandford does not develop. With a number of people suspected of doing the dirty deeds, Sandford comes out of left field and introduces important characters much too late in the book. Sandford does not give any real insight into the killer and Davenport gets on to the trail of the real killer wholly by accident. At the end, I was left saying - "That's it, you've got to be kidding me." The end was rushed and thrown together in a haphazard manner - did Sandford have to meet a deadline? That being said, Davenport is still one of the best characters in this genre and we can only hope that the next installment in the Prey series will be much better than this effort by Sandford. Everyone deserves a mulligan; however, as I recall from childhood, there's only one allowed per round.
Rating: Summary: Another Sandford Goody Review: As always, I found this to be entertaining. Not my favorite of the series. Lucas has three ladies to worry about, but the sexy Jael is his main squeeze in this one. Weather is almost back in the picture. Del, the chief, Sloan and Sherrill all have a hand in it. The two different killers add a new flavor. I have to admit I prefer the standard Sandford of one crazy on the run. Though this one will keep fans of the series interested. I'm glad I started reading these books and look forward to the ones upcoming.
Rating: Summary: I loved it!! Review: This was my first John Sandford novel and I really enjoyed it. Lucas is so likeable, I can't wait to read the next in the series to see where his life goes next! I am going to go back and read the other prey books but have ordered the next after Easy prey to read first. I could'nt put this book down. The number of murders and murder suspects was a little "out there," however, the story never stalls. Lucas' love interests were a few too many but overall I would highly recommend this book. Be prepared to have your nose in this one as soon as the reading begins!
Rating: Summary: Easy Prey Review: Not the best prey book but still good reading for a Davenport fan.
Rating: Summary: Breaks the Rules Review: A real letdown. Sandford breaks at least one of the cardinal rules of mystery writing with this disaster. I hate to give too much away--but you can't introduce a major player in the last couple of chapters.
Rating: Summary: Easy Prey Review: If you have plans for the next twenty four hours don't start this book. It may be his worst or best Lucas Davenport novel--- who cares---it's un-putdownable.
Rating: Summary: The only Sandford Book I didn't bother finishing Review: I wish that I had read other reviews before purchasing this book. This Prey book doesn't belong in the series. Very confusing and a huge let-down. I will never again automatically purchase a John Sandford book and will probably take him off my favorite authors list.
Rating: Summary: Prey series would have been better off without this entry Review: John Sandford is one of a handful of authors whose works I buy on the first day they are on the market. I simply expect a decent read from certain authors and am seldom let down. Well, I was let down this time. Easy Prey is the worst of the prey novels, one the heels of the two best, and Mr.Sandford has let Davenports steady evolution regress. I realize most readers like their heroes as mythological as they can get, but in Sandfords previous works, Davenport has been one of the most real in mystery fiction. The plot is a decent one, but an increaseingly bizarre string of sexual deviancy, relegious zealotry, and violence bogs down the plot. In addition to the failings in the begining and middle, the end is so poorly written(not to emntion abrupt) that it leaves you wondering if sandford forgot to revise the last chapter before releasing it. If you want a recent Sandford novel that is worth the price, try The Devils Code, which features his anti-hero Kidd.
