Rating: Summary: get the audio version Review: The reader in the audio version does a great job with the accent. I enjoyed every minute of the book. This is a good representation of what life in a small Southern town was at the turn of the century. I very much liked how the author described certain events and used them to provide insight about the characters (for example, the funeral arrangements that were made for all dead people in the book, the purchase of the cars, etc). All in all, a very enjoyable read.
Rating: Summary: Like going home Review: I loved this book. Reminded me of a little community where my grandmother lived. So sad there are no more books by this author. Like Margaret Mitchell, One was the best.
Rating: Summary: Don't go through life without reading this book. Review: As a librarian I'm asked daily for recommendations for "a good read." COLD SASSY TREE is one of the very few books that immediately pop into my mind for almost any age or ethnic group. I tend to judge fiction by how long I remember its characters. Will Tweedy has become real to me. I would know him in an instant if I saw him walking down the street. Every library patron who reads this book asks for more by Burns. How disappointing to tell them there are no more. For heavens sake, don't give them LEAVING COLD SASSY. Toss it in the burner barrel.
Rating: Summary: Cold Sassy Tree Review: Great Book! One of the best I have ever read! This novel will keep you laughing the whole way through. The plot is very moving and funny. Burns combines very well the best qualities of humor, trajedy, and terror to for a wonderful novel full of tradtional Southern People.
Rating: Summary: didn't even deserve 1 star... Review: Reading this book was forced upon me, as it was the enriched english class's 3rd grading period novel. Just because it was required was reason enough for me not to want to read it, but I had to, so I did. Every time I picked up this book I found myself drifting off to sleep a few minutes later. It was long and very slow moving. Also, the language used in it was terrible. I had to say the words and phrases aloud so that might be able to understand them. The author should have realized that not everybody that read this was southern. So, unless you are a hick with a severe sleeping disorder I doubt this book is for you...
Rating: Summary: Cold Sassy Tree: A Warm, Heart-felt Story Review: For anyone who read books like To Kill a Mockingbird, or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and enjoyed them, I would suggest reading the national bestseller Cold Sassy Tree. This novel takes place in Cold Sassy, Goergia, in 1906. The town is slow-moving, and prejudice like Maycomb County in To Kill a Mockingbird. The story unfolds as Will Tweedy's, the main character, beloved grandmother dies. Scandal errupts when, only three weeks later, Will's granfather elopes with Miss love Simpson. The town cannot believe that he has married a "yankee" just after his wife's death. The major conflict of the story is between Miss Simpson and Will's family and town as to whether or not they can accept her taking grandma's place. But the important, underlying conflict of this book is if granpa can move on with his life, find love again, and find someway to convince the people of the town that Miss Love Simpson isn't the cold-hearted person they think she is. This book is seen through the eyes of Will Tweedy, a 14 year old boy growing up in a southern town, so, although the words are simple, there is a deeper message about love, death, feelings, and morals. I also learned a lot about southern life through this book. All in all, Cold Sassy Tree was a great book that I would reccommend to anyone. It discussed how much death can change a life forever. Read it! I guarantee you'll enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: Definitely a book to read Review: Cold Sassy Tree, a novel written by Olive Ann Burns, is a very realistic and easy to read book. The characters are very real and entertaining in their everyday life. I liked this book because you feel like you are right there listing to the author tell you about the life of the main character. Also this story is easy to read and follow. There is never a dull moment and every chapter is filled with excitement and adventure. The story takes place on a farm where a young boy is forced to deal with his grandfather who does not follow the normal way of life that the other people in Cold Sassy do. As he grows older the boy learns that he is more like his grandfather than he thought. This boy now must make the decision to follow in the family business, or like his grandfather, follow a different path of life from those people in Cold Sassy. This book is filled with laughs and good times. The ending has an exciting unexpected twist that will leave the reader wanting to read the sequel, Leaving Cold Sassy.
Rating: Summary: You should appreciate this work for what it is! Review: I am amazed at the polarity of reviews of this book. People either loved it or hated it! Olive Ann Burns writes in the same rustic and homespun style as does Jan Karon in the Mitford series. Her plot is simple and charming, and I appreciate that the development is not predictable. It reads as southern small-town historical fiction. A very easy read.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Book Review: I thought Cold Sassy Tree was one of the most marvelous books I have ever read. Throughout the book I was captivated by the story of Will Tweedy and his family. This book makes you cry one minute and laugh the next. I could not put this book down, and read it in one day. Cold Sassy Tree is a really great book to do a report on, because it is so interesting. I recommend this book to EVERYONE ! So read it NOW!
Rating: Summary: Boring Review: Cold Sassy Tree isn't a bad book, but unless you enjoy soap operas and gossip, you might prefer to keep looking.
