Rating: Summary: Awesome-Read this! Review: I had to read this book for an english assignment, but i really got into it and found it difficult to read. The authors style of writing really brings you into the time period. It's full of real life situations and the way the to author makes you feel what the chacaters is feeling and think the way the way would think captures you imagination and puts you in the shoes of the people. Make sure to take your time when you read because as you go on you find inner meaning to phrases that seemed to apply to only one situation
Rating: Summary: Avoid this book like the plague...trash... Review: This book...is awful. Terrible. The whole thing seems so contrived and meaningless. Does the world really need yet another book about a hick family in the south getting their first "artermobile?" Yes, its quaint, and cute, and features people with quirky names like "E. Rucker Blakeslee" and "Love Simpson," and if you like that, go hang out at a Cracker and for the rest of you, get some real literature. May I suggest Plato?
Rating: Summary: Outstanding! Review: I'm at a loss of words. I've been wanting to read this book for a long time! My heritage comes from around there, all my family having grown up in Athens, Ga. I felt glowing pride when reading this book, because I use the exact same dialect today as well as my relatives. Now, I 'm not a red- neck but I do have a strong southern accent because I grew up in the south. This book moved me to tears because its so real. This is a great novel for young and old alike!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: It was ify. Review: It wasn't that great. I was kinda into it at the end but not really. Our teacher forces us to read it at school. Its the dreaded time in English 1st quater. Where you have 1 1/2 wks to finish the book.
Rating: Summary: AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: This book was one of the best books that I have ever read!!! It tells of life in the early 1900's and not many books are like that!!! I like how this book twists and turns and leads you to a VERY surprising ending!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Gets better with each page. Review: I am a new reader to Olive Ann Burns. I was standing in a bookstore and a lady aggressively suggested I read Cold Sassy Tree, so I did. It was great. The characters really come to life with the dialog. The main character, Will, will grow on you. It is written in a way that you are forced to pronounce the character's southern drawl. It is quite charming! You get a sense of life in the southern part of our country at the turn of the century. I highly recommend this book!!
Rating: Summary: One great book Review: I had to read this book for my english class, and before i opened it, I thought to myself, oh great anouther boring book that my teacher is making us read. Well for the first time in my life, I am glad she is making us read this book, simply because i would probably have never picked it up and read it. It is a great book whichs makes you steps out of your shell and realize all the greatness in your life. It makes you laugh, cry, smile, mad, angry, almost any emotion you can think of, and true to the back cover, it does hurt to put it down.
Rating: Summary: Irresistable appeal Review: I have only recently discovered Amazon.com and the reader reviews and it is a great feature of the site. I was so surprised to see a few negative reviews of Cold Sassy. It's hard to believe that anyone who read the entire book could actually not like it. I know people young and old, from intellectual to redneck, avid readers and casual readers, and they all praise this book unconditionally. Just a superb piece of writing, obviously carefully labored over by the author.
Rating: Summary: Funny, sad, touching, beautiful, wonderful... Review: I just finished reading this book about five minutes ago and my eyes are so swollen and puffy! I am a very avid reader, and have read countless books, but this is truly one of the best I've ever had the privilege of knowing and loving. The characters are so real, the dialogue so true to life, the story itself so similar to life's patterns and yet so far from the ordinary. You feel like you know and love everyone in this story from the moment you meet them. They are all wonderful characters; Will Tweedy, Grandpa, Miss Love, and even the hated Aunt Loma are so human in their strengths and in their failings that you can't help but identify with them all. This is a book to give you a new and deep appreciation for your family and loved ones. You'll want to call everyone you know just to tell them that you love them.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book I have ever Read Review: One critic perfectly summed up the book: its a story of "An young man growing up, an old man growing young, and the coming of age to a small southern town." I have read thousands of books in my life, and this one is my favorite. As a writer, I am awed and humbled by the author's use of every emotion...she is a fabulous storyteller. This story made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me happy, it made me mad. It is all of these things...a book that will touch you and change your life. The use of southern humor is exquisite...the dialect is wonderful...the emotions are conveyed perfectly... Don't be intimidated by the length of the book...trust me, 400 pages is all too short once you get involved in the story. You are aching for the book to continue at its end. Read this book, you won't be disappointed. I am saddened that Olive Ann Burns only had the chance to write one book (and fragments of another, Leaving Cold Sassy). She was such a talented author, one whom I will always remember as writing a thoughtful, humorous book that made my soul soft, happy, and forever changed.
