Rating: Summary: very boring/lifeless in the beginning but picks up the pace Review: When i read a book, i need to start right into a major event, something that will catch my attention! In this book, that didn't happen until about page 200! But even when the the conflict and the story line picked up i still could not understand their dialect! I'm not really into all that southern talk, and i really don't enjoy reading it. Don't get me wrong, because i really respect Ms. Burns' writings, but this particular one was just not for me.
Rating: Summary: A wonderfully written novel that should not be over-looked Review: This year I was required to read COLD SASSY TREE for my English course. I was a bit reluctant to read it at first considering it's length and other friends comments. However, I started it and found that I could not put it down. The twists and turns of the plot never cease and I became totally caught up in the lives of the different characters. So many differnt personalities and acts are revealed in this novel, you cannot help but to find one character you relate to. I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates southern pride and tradition...as well as an entertaining story!
Rating: Summary: A BOOK FOR SOUTHERN READERS ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: Have you ever read a novel where you have to re-read just about every sentence to understand it? I definitely think O.A.B was a very gifted and talented author, however this particular book was NOT for me. If you enjoy southern books with a Georgia feel you'll probably enjoy Cold Sassy Tree. O.A.B portrayed the characters very nicely and made you feel as if you lived in the south. I happen to be a more northern girl.
Rating: Summary: Left with wanting more! Review: This book was great! I enjoyed the honesty of the book. Using dialect and descriptive writing, Olive Ann Burns gives the reader a taste of small town life in turn of the century Georgia. Additionally, I enjoyed the thoughts and comments of the fourteen year old Will Tweedy. There was humor and sadness in this story, and I did not want the book to end.
Rating: Summary: Love and Scandel provide Interest Review: This book full of Love and Scandel was interesting. I liked it alot, even thought it was an assigned required book. They should of done more with Will And Lightfoot though.
Rating: Summary: Great read, hard to put down and sorry when last page comes Review: Mrs. Burns characters seem so real, human and Will Tweedy leads the way to many adventures with the people of Cold Sassy, Georgia. How I wish there were more after the unfinished sequel!
Rating: Summary: A charming book! Review: Cold Sassy Tree was charming and beautifully written. The book focuses on life in the old south and makes us look at ourselves and see the humor and even sadness in every day life. I would definitely reccomend this book to anyone who enjoys southern writers. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT!!!! Review: This book was not only the best required school reading I have ever read, it is one of the best books I have ever read. Whoever said it was awful must have been reading it while smoking something. I loved the sentiment and simplicity. The story was astounding, yet simple, as though it could happen to anyone. I hardly put it down from the moment I picked it up. The sequel is next for me!!
Rating: Summary: Having just moved to the south- it was a great read! Review: It was a fun "no-brainer" read.
Rating: Summary: Dumb book Review: I can't imagine anyone enjoying a story about a redneck. The most unimaginative book I have ever written. Burns switches between hick-talk and proper English too often and forgets to follow up on what would seem to be integral parts of the story. Why would the grandpa be written without an arm if Burns didn't write much about it, and how come next to nothing was written about Will's legs? They were run over by a train, were they not? Overall dumb book, not as bad as Bless Me, Ultima, but almost.
