Rating: Summary: This book was well worth the money. Review: I was never really a fan of Steve Martin's until "LA Story," which was so full of symbolism, cultural literacy, humor and romance that I decided to give him a second try, and I'm certainly glad I did! "Pure Drivel" is laugh-out-loud funny, but Martin asks that the reader bring something to the table. If you're looking for the arrow-through-the-head Czech brother humor, it's not likely you'll find it here. If you're looking for a book that lets you respect your intelligence in the morning, this is it. I especially loved the Mensa and the memory essays.
Rating: Summary: Lives up to its name Review: I guess I must be a reformed Steve Martin fan. I used to think he was bust-me-up, fall on the floor funny, but while listening to this tape I hardly laughed. Some of the bits are very funny, but not enough to make it worth the money. Overall, I was disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Mr. Martin Displays An Amazing Intellect Review: It is amazing the number of topics that Mr. Martin can discuss with great clarity in a mere 100+ pages. These are brilliant essays on such varied subjects as human nature, science, medicine, and literary criticism. SM has managed to succinctly present difficult, esoteric knowledge to us average laymen. I hope this slender volume will have a sequel, perhaps discussing his opinions on global warming, the inflation theory of the universe, and his views on punctuated equilibrium. I wish I could think of more adjectives to describe this learned work. Hmmm. How about silly, inane, absurd, preposterous, farcical, risible, and perhaps even jejune. I guess that about sums it up.
Rating: Summary: A waste of time... Review: I had so many expectations of this book by the superb Steve Martin, based upon the review of amazon.com readers: "Don't read this in public, people will think you are crazy for laughing out loud!!!", "Don't read this over a lasagna, you'll make a mess trying to contain your laughter!!!", etc, etc, etc. I can assure readers that, apart from a couple of brief passages, one does not risk laughing out loud. Most of it was boring and dull. What's the fuss all about? Along with David Sedaris's books "Barrel Fever" and "Naked", this has to be one of the most overrated humour books.
Rating: Summary: Deserves "0" stars Review: It's a shame that such a talent wrote such a piece of trash. A waste of money.
Rating: Summary: a real drain on productivity Review: I don't know how many hours I cost my company, as I distracted my co-workers with my shrieks of laughter as I read "A Public Apology", "Dear Amanda", and "Writing Is Easy" during my lunch hours. The book is a scream, and is worth your while (if you HAVE a sense of humor, that is).
Rating: Summary: It was great. Steve is absolutely brilliant Review: It was great. Steve is absolutely brilliant
Rating: Summary: A complete waste of time.. Review: Of the entire tape, the few humorous passages could have fit quite easily on a post-it note instead.
Rating: Summary: The title is accurate..... Review: Not funny, and indeed, pure drivel. I love Steve Martin's comedy, but this just wasn't good at all. I threw the CD away after one playing.
Rating: Summary: Grammy Nomination! Review: Audio nominated for a Grammy Award
