Rating: Summary: Delicious Review: A petite four of a book - tasty and expensive yet somewhat unsatisfying. Martin's witty thoughts meander delightfully over an unreal landscape. His intelligence and education shine throughout these finely crafted short essays. However, I wish there was more, both in volume and substance.
Rating: Summary: Steve Martin is the best comedian ever Review: His book pure drivel is a great portraying of him, but I don't believe that this is his best work. Some of the chapters were hilarous, but I think that if oyu have never heard of Steve Martin, this is not the best place to start. Try the Jerk!
Rating: Summary: This book delivers what it promises. Review: I can hear Steve Martin's carefully timed delivery in each paragraph. I can see the (fake) arrow through his head and hear the beat of Egyptian music in the background. I can see the wild-and-crazy guy strutting his stuff in the 70's bar scene. So I got some good laughs. If the reader lacks the ability to roll these flavors together in this dish, I'd wait for the video. For Fans Only! Too little for too much.
Rating: Summary: Very strange. Not funny. Review: Sorry, just didn't get this book. Didn't laugh more than a couple of times in the first 50 pages, so then just skimmed the rest. Wasn't funny. Just unintelligible. Don't bother.
Rating: Summary: Witty musings from a talented writer. Review: Mr. Martin's book, Pure Drivel, is full of clever writing. It is, however, not much more than that. Reminiscent of Vonnegut's book of short stories, Welcome to the Monkey House, I expected it to leave me with the same feeling of thoughtful pleasure and somewhat breathless awe of Mr. Martin's skillful manipulations of the language. It didn't. Pure Drivel seems to be a collection of bits and pieces, the mere warm-up exercises of a writer. While it is encouraging for me as a budding writer to see that even such doodles of language can be published and sold, this book does not do the author justice. It was interesting to see what a writer that I admire does in his spare time, but I don't think that it was worth paying for it. Afterall, I don't think that my literary doodles will ever find such notoriety. I have to save up for my own career! :)nikki
Rating: Summary: it's insulting that anyone would consider publishing this Review: What a disappointment. I think Steve Martin is one of the funniest people alive and this was a ridiculous waste of money and time.
Rating: Summary: STEVE MARTIN IS L.A.'S WOODY ALLEN Review: A funny, funny book! Even better than CRUEL SHOES
Rating: Summary: The funniest part of this book is the author's name. Review: Drivel, like belly gas, should be emitted (and inhaled) sparingly. Readers not yet Martin-addicted might be well advised to limit themselves to one chapter per week to avoid overdosing.
Rating: Summary: Good enough to read while your boss thinks you're working Review: After having read a few Toni Morrisson books (not exactly rib-ticklers) I found myself in need of some light-heartedness. The cover of Pure Divel caught my eye and I picked it up...then I put it down. $20! For such a little book? (Thank the WWW gods for Amazon.com) Determined to laugh I bought the book and happily was not dissapointed. Although one or two essays didn't rise to the level of the rest of the work, overall, I was more than impressed. Two of the stories in particular had me laughing outloud at work (please don't tell my boss I was reading on the job...). "Mars Probe Finds Kittens" was smart, original, and (for me, anyway) hysterically visual. And having grown up next to a couple who had Mensa parties, and being witness to their bizarre game of intellectual King of the Hill "How I Joined Mensa" struck me as sarcstically witty as it was true. So, worth the $20? You bet. Now I can pass that $20 rectangle of humor on to one of my friends knowing that they will enjoy it as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: steve, you kick a** Review: steve martin ,ever the comedic, ironic genius. you are always challenging, even if you disturb me with the channels my humor may follow along with yours. Sincerely , Antig
