Rating: Summary: Wise words greatly needed now Review: I read this book for the first time in the early eighties on a flight to Dallas via San Antonio, San Marcos and Austin (cheapest ticket). It was not my first contact with Eastern Philosophy. I attended several TM classes as a senior in high school and had always been very interested in Tibet and Buddhism.
This book can alter your life. It is deceptively simple. How to live an honorable life without the violence that we are so accustomed to. I have read it numerous times and given away all of my copies. During the years I have had several books on my shelf that Chogyam wrote and never read them. It seemed to be enough just to have them there sitting on the shelf radiating his wisdom out to the world from my bookshelf. Silly, I know but my heart was opened, moved and changed by the wisdom contained in just this one book. Working in a giant communications company and living in the southwest tail of the bible belt offered many, many opportunities to test and apply what I had absorbed from this book. Combined with a weekly fix of New Dimensions I set about trying to live my life from the wisdom contained. It was and still is a wonderful experience.
For those who have a difficult time in separating the message from the messinger you might try reading "The Essential Crazy Wisdom" by Wes Nisker.
Chogyam was a great gift to America - wisdom that is desperately needed in today's times.
Rating: Summary: This book has been my daily study guide for 25 years Review: I rely on this book, it has been my companion for many years everywhere I go. I have given away dozens of copies, in various printings, to friends and foe. What makes this 'pocket classic' edition special is the package: it is tiny. It really does fit in a small pocket; it is about the size of a deck of cards (I think - it has been a long time since I have seen a deck of cards!). But despite its minuscule size, it is easy to read, the print is clear and simple. The content, too, is clear and simple. The Path of the Warrior is a way of being in the worl. It is not a religion, but a path to spirit. It is said to be very old (from well before Buddhism) and it is completely contemporaneous. If your eyes are not as good as they were or as they should be, you should buy the more normal size book. But, definitely, buy it! It will change your life.
Rating: Summary: Incredible Review: I reviewed the book previously without expressing its full impact on my life. This book is the only book ever to have actually changed the way I live, the choices I make- every day. I have passed it along to others and recommended it to many more still. ...
Rating: Summary: The jury is still out Review: I've read this book three times and took Shambala Training. Many years ago, I saw a young girl sitting on a park bench reading this book. I thought "uh-oh!" Chogyam Trungpa was considered one of the greatest meditation masters in American Buddhism. The Karmapa approved of him totally. He was a brillant man who understood the inhibitions and neurosis of Westerners possibly better than any teacher who has taught Tibetan Buddhism in the West. He helped me a great deal. I no longer became embarrassed about being a human being. His books are and were great. But sadly enough, we have to face facts. I have talked to many many people in the last twenty years who knew him. His conduct was, to say the least, deplorable. He constantly violated four out of the five Buddhist precepts. Buy the book. All of Trungpa's books and his teachings were fundamentally kind and compassionate. Just do what the Dalai Lama suggests. Be wary with any personal teacher. Best of luck.

Rating: Summary: A wonderful book Review: Many people have already reviewed this book; I only want to share this: Out of all the dozens of self-improvement texts I have read, this one stands high above all the rest in my opinion. Basically, instead of telling you how wonderful and successful your life will be if you do everything the author tells you (as is the usual theme in this kind of books); you are told that 1) you are wonderful as you are; and 2) in order to experience this wonderfulness, you must renounce selfishness and become completely open to the suffering of the world. This is a very un-Western viewpoint, and very very fresh to me - like a gust of salty cool wind into a stale smokey room. If you are ready for some fresh air, buy this book!
Rating: Summary: An essential work...from a warrior's perspective Review: Need I summarize or paraphrase any more of this wonderful book? Need I tout the wisdom contained in this small volume any more than what has already been said by the other dozen or so reviews? I wish to offer a different perspective, if I may: that of a martial artist and a warrior. I have been a student of Korean and Japanese martial arts for well over a decade, with special emphasis on the spiritual and philosophical side of the arts. The Japanese concept of Bushido, the way of the warrior, has been an especially powerful guiding force in my life, as well as in the lives of many of my fellow martial arts students, philosophy students, and close loved ones. Duty, honor, humility, and loyalty, as taught in Bushdo, are among the cornerstones of this way of life and mode of thought; and these concepts do, indeed, mean virtually everything to the modern-day warrior. So where does this work fit in? It can quite easily and effectively influence all people's lives for the better. This book teaches that we can become free of our fear in order to become "gentle and genuine". Thus awakening the goodness inherent within her/himself, the warrior becomes free to help those around her or him to achieve such enlightenment. Reviews such as these simply cannot do such teaching proper justice. The impact it has on warriors in today's world is extremely deep, on a personal and emotional level. Heck, it even made me cry a couple times! So, to summarize, this book is indeed a boon for all people, regardless of faith. But it is my sincere belief that to a true warrior, martial artist or not, this book is absolutely essential for defining one's path, choosing which wars to fight, and ultimately for seeking peace.
Rating: Summary: a beginners guide to Shambhala Review: Shambhala: The Sacred path of the Warrior is a book I read on whimsy. I read this book originally because of the relationship Trungpa had with Allen Ginsberg. I was curious so I picked up a copy of this book. It was enlightening because this is the real deal unlike a lot of the half baked Zen Buddhism invoked by many beatnik types. One need not drop acid to gain wisdom here. If you want the hokey, trippie hippie Buddhism, forget this book. Trungpa is writing of an ancient code of warriorship. It is an inward, spiritual journey drawn from the Tibetan warrior culture. One who reads this and learns the lessons it teaches will be assisted in overcoming self doubt and negativity. This is not a book of violence. It is really a guide towards overcoming violence. It is about learning mastery over oneself. I was inspired to be better after reading this book. It made me believe in the possibility of transcendence. That is saying something, too. It is a very motivational book.
Rating: Summary: The Most Inspirational Book I've Ever Read Review: So powerfully done that it literally "converted" me to the devotion to Buddhist traditions in my everyday life.
Rating: Summary: not as good as his other works, Review: such as 'Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism', which is a very good read. His words in this book are not very concise and he never goes deep into his topics. It is much like a cliff notes for 'The Road Less Traveled' - by Scott Peck. If you want to read about how to live everyday life, go for Scott Peck. If you are looking for a book on Zen or meditation read 'Zen Mind, Beginners Mind'. Shambhala wasnt a terrible book, but it wasnt a life changing, thought inspiring one either. Hope this review helped!
